Would it be such a bad thing? With a lineup to Nash/Bell/Hill/Marion/Amare and Diaw/Barbosa/Thomas coming off the bench, we have a great chance of winning the title next year if we stay healthy.

Then if Marion opts out, so what! We can sign someone with the money free'd up from Marion and Thomas! We could probably sign 2 really good players, or one great one since players seem to be willing to take less to play here. Plus we'll be adding a lottery pick (keep fingers crossed) from ATL.

At the end of next season we'd have:

Nash/Bell/Hill/Amare/Diaw/Barbosa/ATL Pick/Sign Top FA or two

I think the future looks bring for us! As long as we get a big in to play center, maybe in the draft, and sign a PG to take over when Nash is done, or flip flop the draft/sign.

As long as we don't hear him complain about "not getting enough credit" and his even more reduced role.

How can you trade an all-star at the trade deadline if this is your once chance to win a title? I agree he's not the answer long term, but you cannot change a team that drastically so late in the season and expect to win a title.

If Marion isn't traded, he probably won't opt out of his deal after this season, so he'd still be here for another year.

Opt out of what like a 17mil last year? Don't think so, no one else is gonna pay him that so he will stay and collect that huge last year on contract. And he is not getting traded some of you need to let it go he is here and not going anywhere. I am glad he is here let this group have another shot at it!

In 2009, his chances of getting a big contract without a sign and trade is very small.

Shawn isn't smart enough to realize that.

I think the Celtics situation may have changed his view.

So far, the Celtics have been the only team that actually wanted him that offered more than expiring contracts. Apparently his agent found out what the Celtics wanted from him, ie a promise to return AT A VASTLY LOWER PRICE which is at least part of why he was so hostile to the move. (Nobody asked Ray Allen if he was interested in moving).

If Marion wants another really big contract, he is going to have to figure out how to shoot better and accept contact when going to the basket. He's a very good player who fits into the Suns system, but he cannot expect Rashard Lewis money if he doesn't shoot like Lewis (39% for three). Marion's 31% for three won't cut it.

Marion will stay this year and I'll be fine with it. He brings a lot to the team, but when he opts out next season we can just sign KG when he does the same. :)

It seems Shawn Marion has become the official scapegoat on this board. It's a shame because he has had a great career with the Suns.

1. If he opts out our salary will still be around $57million meaning we'll probably be just a hair under the cap...not much room to sign a "great" player.

2. If we're under the cap we won't have the MLE to use on anyone else.

3. Shawn isn't going to opt out...while many on here don't think he's that smart...I'll wager his agent is.

Rashard Lewis lives off the three point shot, but Marion has a much better overall game. Much more is expected of Marion. I'd take Marion over Lewis everyday of the week and twice on Sunday... Um...youknowwhatimsayin.' :)

It's funny when a guy sitting behind a computer calls someone dum and yet that same "dum" guy is making millions of dollars and living what the guy in the computer just wishes he could live.

I think it's funny that you spelled "dum" without a b. ;)

I also think it's funny that you think Rab lives in the computer - you are familiar with the internet right?

If Marion opts out, the Suns will likely be $8-10 million on the good side of the luxury tax threshold (it will surely adjust a good bit upwards by then). The Suns could use their full MLE and still stay in good standing -- no dollar-for-dollar tax, plus they finally get to share in the tax revenue (assuming the Knicks haven't dug themselves out of their own hole by then).

Also, I'm waiting for cap figures to come out. I've heard it could jump as much as $4 million this year (from $53 mil to $57 mil). The Suns could even wind up several million under the cap if Marion opts out and the cap adjusts enough upwards.

My prediction. Marion opts out and we end up getting KG without having to give up anything. Plus with the discount KG is going to give us to play here with Nash, Amare and Grant Hill (score!) we can go get us a legit back-up/possible starter at the two. Then we finally draft Nash's heir apparent in a PG heavy draft with Atlanta's pick in Derrick Rose, OJ Mayo or Jared Bayless.

:koolaid: OHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH!

The NBA always overpays shooters and often undervalue guys who do dirty work such as defense and rebounding. For example, Bowen gets $4.1 million this season. Prince is a guy who is often compared to Marion and he gets half what Marion makes. Artest is a problem child, but even so his pay of $7.3 million is pretty low compared to the guy he was traded for: Peja at $11.9 million this season.

No way. They will not disrupt the chemistry mid year.

The only way Marion is traded by the deadline is if the team is performing poorly.

So making millions of dollars playing a sport makes someone really intelligent? Okay. You are right though, I do live on the computer all day. It's called having a job, which I use to peep into the forum now and then, but whatever.

If you actually understood what I wrote, I said that Marion isn't smart enough to realize that he won't be making more than the 17 mill he'd be leaving on the table if he opts out, since he tends to think he is better than he really is.

Better?

I was trying to say that Marion is living the life that almost everyone here wishes we could live. Sorry for the spelling and the grammar!! (English as a second language doesn't help)

The point I am trying to make is that I can't really see how anyone here can call Marion dumb when he managed to get to the NBA and get a max contract. I know that playing basketball is a physical thing, but if people want to call someone dumb there are a lot of people with great physical abilities that go wasted because of drugs and things like that. Besides, does anyone here knows Marion personally to call him that??

He talks really funny though......youknowwhatimsayin.

More then a shame - it's nauseating and well beyond old at this point. The conversation on this board is also much less interesting and stimulating because of it.

Whatever - if ripping on Marion helps people deal with the summer heat, fine. My bet is he could care less what some anonymous fans on a message board think about him.

Dexter Manley couldn't even freaking read and he was one of the best players in the NFL. You want to know why so many ex-athletes end up broke, even after making millions? It's because they are freaking stupid - plain and simple. You can easily be a MAX player and still be a complete idiot. Just because you have freakish athletic qualities and you haven't screwed up the rest of your life doesn't automatically make someone intelligent, that is unless you set the bar REALLY low for what passes for intelligence.

i'd take that bet considering the belly-aching and moaning Marion does about not getting respect from anyone.
