If you could add one former Cardinal to the 2004, who would it be?

I dont get the Swann thing--

yes he could dominate, but he would do it for one game and then disapear the next two.

He was in a nutshell why the Cardinals have struggled -- talented players who have produced only in spurts

Swann is good and all that, but I agree he was not dominating every Sunday. I think with a good pass rush, Starks, Hill and Macklin would look really good, So I will say Simion Rice I'm not sure who would play the LDE role between Berry and Rice. The Cards would have a liability against the run, but I haven't seen Sacks for so long I wouldn't mind seeing Berry and Rice trying to kill the QB

I would have to say the best player we've had was Williams, he consistantly shut down the opponents top receiver and I thought he was the best corner in the game when he was in his prime. He should go to the hall of fame.

I think Swann might have the most potential to help a team win a game but the problem was he wasn't consistant. If we're talking about Swann as his best for one game I would pick him but if we're talking a career or even a year I would pick Williams.

I know there's time yet, but... who should I take? Who are you folks looking at?

Anquan of course, even with the addition of Fitz. Shipp as a number two back. And I really thing Josh is going to rock. I'll probably hold him out and take him after I take a number one. I will not, however, take our defense under any circumstances.

Whoops. I was trying to start a new thread. Nevermind.

I think that is mostly because of injuries. He had the heart of a lion it was just taken away due to the pain.

1. Seth Joyner...We need a tough, vocal leader on the field and nobody threw a helmet better than Seth! BTW...He hit pretty damn hard, too!

2. Neil Lomax with Steve Young's hips...One of the most accurate passers in NFL history...He even came in 1st, or 2nd, in one of those NFL QB Challenges, after retiring with bad hips.

3. Garrison Hearst...Comeback player twice and the Cards never gave him the chance...Was the homerun threat we were missing for all of those years...Anybody remember Steve Young's final game?

4. Tim MacDonald...Went on to be a great safety, and win SB's, with freaking San Fransisco...Another Cardinal blunder.

5. Otis Anderson...Any doubts? Just ask the 1990 Buffalo Bills...Biggest Cardinal blunder of them all.

Swan. And pre bad knees, I don't remember him disappearing in games. The one thing I always wondered was if the team used Swannie wrongly? I always thought that he would have made a hell of a Reggie White type defensive end with his power and speed, and he wouldn't have tended to have gotten as tied up with all the inside traffic that a DT has to put up with.

Metcalf was exciting and fun to watch. Ottis Anderson was without a doubt the Cardinals best RB.

Jim Otis was Cards best FB, back when FBs were FBs. They were blockers and short yardage runners. One year Otis gained over 1,000 yds rushing. That is a lot for a slow 3 yards and a cloud of dust guy.

Not even Close.....Eric Swann! When healthy, he can single handedly disrupt an offence.

If Swann had so much impact why was the Cards defense never one of the best during those years? The Cards offense when Lomax and Anderson played was one of the league's best. I am old enough to have seen Lomax, Anderson and Swann play. Have those advocates of Swann seen Lomax and Anderson play together? That would mean you were a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

I have been a Cardinal Fan since 1973. This means not only have I seen Lomax and Anderson play, but Hart...Gray..J. Ottis...Metcalf...etc.....Tho I dont discount their greatness for us, They were in the limelight, and easy to notice their accomplishments. Eric, even when not involved in the play, caused defending offensive coordinators to alter their gameplan to avoid him. As stated on another post, The Washington Redskins game, when Eric had a couple of sacks, a safety (nearly took the hand-off in the endzone) and several tackles. When we had Swann...Bankston..Rice...Wilson, we had one of the most dominating DL's in the league. One mans opinion

Eric Swann. He dominated when healthy, and along with other popular choices in this thread, Aeneas and Tillman, was a member of the team that won our first playoff game since 1947.

Excuse me for this:

Garrison Hearst owes us millions. A first round pick wasted, gained 264 yards his first year, 169 his second, then low and behold, 1070 in his third and final year here. 3 rushing TD's in three years. We never gave him a chance?

Steve Youngs final game? Yes, I remember it well. I remember Aeneas laying Young out, for the last time.

T-mac was here 5 years, and couldn't wait to leave. No blunder on the Cards part.

I have, I have been a cards for for 25 years. I went with Swan because I am still old school in believing the defense wins championships.

I took S11's question to mean who would you add that could MOST help the team in the 2004 season.

So after reading the responses I would rank them like this:

#1 Aeneas Williams because they need a big time corner badly.
#2 Swann because a dominant DT is needed almost as badly.
#3 Lomax. The best QB to play for the Cards since the 40's and an experienced proven talent like Neil would be way better than a guy with 4 starts. However, the people who seem to know Green best claim that Dennis doesn't need an all-pro caliber QB to make his offense work so Lomax ranks at 3.

I say Larry Wilson in his prime. They've got Q to set the pace for the Offense, now they need a leader on the Defense.

Here's a name no one's thrown out yet: Ollie Matson.

I figure these guys that played in the days of yor would still be able to play today if they had nutritionists, trainers and pharmasists like the players do today. Just becasue they weren't as big or as fast back then doesn't mean these same guys wouldn't be big and fast in today's NFL. Talent is talent.

Just spent 3 hours watching a highlights tape i made over the years. It had the game that Swann dominated......It was on a feature of Monday evening quarterback Where Jack Edwards (SportsCenter Comentator) said ...and I qoute: "7 tackles...4 assists...2 sacks...a safety and 1 bad man!"

Also,...anyone remember a fine runningback by the name of Johnny Johnson

JJ was a Pro Bowler in 1990. That was Bugles first year.

Swanny dominated in more than just one game. Keep in mind, he was a run stuffing DT. Swann's sacks:

91) 4
92) 2
93) 3.5
94) 7
95) 8.5
96) 5
97) 7.5
98) 4
99) 4

Even though he had bad knee problems throughout his career, he led the team in sacks in 94 and 97.

Simeon Rice got rich on the back of Eric Swann. Swanny's last year, Rice got 16.5 sacks, the next year without Swanny, 7.5, then gone to Tampa where he continued the fraud with the help of Warren Sapp/Anthony McFarland.

In doing the research, I was surprised at Ken Harvey's sack numbers. He was the Phoenix Cardinals first draft pick:

88) 6
89) 7
90) 10
91) 9
92) 6
93) 9.5

He led the team in sacks 5 of the 6 years he was here.

Harvey attended High School in Austin. I use him as the reason I am a Cardinal fan when someone local asks and I don't want them to know how old I am.
