I have not yet touched the salt shaker. I'm actually pretty proud of myself. I was sorely tempted last night. I wasn't feeling good & wanted salt on my corn, dammit. But, I refrained. Go me. :)

The key is to properly salt your water before you boil it, then you dont break the rules by adding extra salt. Make your boiling water taste like the ocean, and then cook your corn/whatever veg in it. It will be perfectly seasoned and you wont need to reach for the shakers. I asked God, he's cool with this, by the way. He was in for lunch. Had a burger, medium rare.

EDIT: and always use Kosher salt for cooking. Iodized salt, used in that quantity, will give a funky flavor to your food. Hell, I dont use anything BUT kosher salt at all anymore. That iodized stuff tastes weird.

:D Basically, YES. I was wanting to be self-indulgent.

Dude. It's a can. I open it. I drain it. I dump it in a bowl. I stick it in the microwave. No salt, no boiling water.

But yes, I use kosher salt often now in cooking, thanks to Alton Brown.

I will take your advice into consideration should I decide to actually cook something fresh...but corn in winter? No way. $$$

giving up the old alcohol, save abomb's wedding and bachelor party.

But since we observe "free days" on Sundays, I will just abstain on the sundays too.
:) Good for you. I will probably never do that.

I am giving up soda. I didn't really have a problem untill I went over to my brothers house to help him with something and he had bought a 2 liter of Dr. Pepper for me. Sure looked good.
I don't drink soda, but if I had to give up iced tea...someone would die. I'm cranky enough without my salt shaker.

Dude. It's a can.

No Linda. No. Friends don't let friends eat canned corn.

Either fresh from the cob, or trader joe's frozen sweet yellow corn. Those are the only two acceptable.

This is serious business!

Cans of corn are only good as baseball terms. Seriously. Put down the actual can and slowly back away.

Not really pointless, but to each his own, I guess.

Ok Ill bite. Whats the point in giving up alcohol for lent? Especially when you still plan on drinking on certain occasions and Sundays?

In most cases I agree with your philosophy about corn. But I have found that Green Giant Niblet corn is pretty darn good for being from a can. Very sweet!

I like to have a beer or two most days, so there is the sacrifice in that. Sundays just aren't a good day for drinking, so they are pretty pointless (unlike giving up chocolate and such, which my wife does...her sundays are nice for her). The occasions I am only doing this one year because it is abomb's wedding stuff...usually I don't drink on St. Patrick's day if I give up alcohol, and that sucks.

The other night abomb came over and made pizza and brought some Hefi...of which I could not partake. That sucked too. Saturday nights when people have parties or poker or whatever, no drinking there.

If you don't drink much, it doesn't matter but if you do then it's something that you are sacrificing.

It isn't what an individual gives up that matters, anyway, as long as it is something that you crave/like/would miss. It would be like you not allowed to look in a mirror for lent :p

pfft. Snobs. It's CORN!!

If I were eating canned asparagus or something, I would understand. And I do agree fresh is WAY better. But it's corn, and we have a budget...and 5 kids to feed now.

You're joking, right? I won't be buying any vegetables that have green & red peppers in it. :barf:

Sorry, I'm as trailer as it comes to my corn. Store brand. Slap some butter on it, heat it up. Guess what??? It tastes like....CORN!!

What's the cost of that canned corn?

I would say the TJ's frozen is comparable...especially with the amount of corn you get in each.
