If that was all it took to be an NFL player I'm sure he would be all pro. Unfortunately, there are other factors involved like physical ability, speed and size

In all seriousness though, if I hadn't had 10 knee surgeries on my left knee, hadn't been born 5'10", had 4.3 speed, was incredibly strong, and had a brilliant football mind, I would be playing in the NFL right now.

Which part of Long's 45 yard KO return sucked? He also did a great job of holding onto the football as he got whammed from the side on the tackle. The kid is tough, has good feet and he plays hard.

LMAO! He didn't fumble, so he deserves to be on the team. He Mitch, I showed up for work on time yesterday, tell my boss I deserve a raise!

The reason's are obvious.

His versatility. He can play wr and return punts. Breaston and Howling are nicked up. Long may be the 53rd guy on the roster and might not be here by Monday.

I think someone from another team is picked up and Long is not on the team come Monday also. This is the best of both worlds for us.If not I feel very sick that we feel a real NEED for this guy on our team. Not a good sign at all.

There is absolutly zero reason this guy is on the team.. Why? He didnt show he belonged.. Did I miss something? I dont see the love for him from the fans? Because he's a little white dude fans want him around? Cherbet was around because they had no other options.. We have Q, Fitz and Stevie.. Makes no damn sense having this many WR's..

Im more worried by this decsion than anything.. I hope Lance can rush the QB since we need some LB's..
For F's sake waht the hell? Kurt cant even hit Fitz, much less a tiny white dude .. So are we gonna line up 6 or 7 WR's? this year?

aaaggghhh

Hey, it's not YOUR fault that Lance Long sucks, no need to apologize. :D

I like Long's hustle and positive attitude; I don't know if he's good enough to play for the Cards..

He may also be gone when Patrick is ready to return. You need to cut someone to add Ben. On the other hand, it does not make sense to keep 4 TE's...

Why you're wrong

At the Mississippi State U. Pro Day, Lance Long ran a 40 yard dash in 4.35 seconds - faster than any WR in the NFL combine that season. He jumped 39 inches - which his higher than most guards in the NBA. He bench pressed 225 14 times. He is a physical specimin.

Maybe this is why Whisenhunt wants to keep him around and does not want other teams to get a chance at picking him up.

Furthermore, he is not small. He's the same size as Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, Ike Bruce and Ricky Proehl. Do you think he's too small because he's white? Do YOU have a problem?

Long is not a Rudy story so you "fans" should stop viewing him that way.

He didn't show any of that speed in any game I saw--I don't care how he timed, nor did he look anything like his hands were anything special.

He has to be #53 on this roster and first to go when better players become available. I m sure NFL teams aren't licking their chops hoping he comes available.

This isn't a roster spot for a skills competetition. This is the N-F-L.

He can have all the measurables he wants. But the crazy thing is he never did it in college and he has had very little production in any preseason game the last two years IIRC- especially the last two games when things were on the line and he had every opportunity to respond.

Shouldn't we have to see SOMETHING in game conditions before giving him a roster spot?

Whatever. Its obvious the coaching staff loves him and if the point is to keep Long away from the Chiefs we certainly did that. I am sure he will get bumped down to the the PS once a OLB or DL guy becomes available.

I trust Wiz but as of now I didn't see anything in any games that made me think "Wow - this kid can bring 'X' to the table"

And he could be white, black, blue, or green - but dems the facts.

Thats great and all, but he still sucks in game time situations..

He is not Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, Issac Bruce or even Ricky Proehl..

You guys lack credibility

You say any NFL player "sucks"? That says something about you.

I will defer to Whisenhunt, who took the pitiful Cardinals' franchise from zero to its first Super Bowl appearance. He observed Long and the other receivers first hand over the past two seasons.

BTW, what has Early Doucet done to stand out ahead of Long in your minds?

Im intrigued by your arrival to ASFN.. Your first two posts and come out blazing like someone just slapped your sister.. Either your a crazed Lance Long fan, or related to him.. Im gonna go out on a limb and say your not a Cards fan, which would in turn give you zero credibilty..

By the way, Shouldnt Lance have at least played in an NFL game (preseason doesnt count), before you annoint him an NFL player like the rest of them players you compared him to? I tried to find Lance's career stats.. They are nowhere to be found..

instead of talking down to a long time poster in Gee, you could start by getting me a sandwich from Paradise Bakery and a glass of chocolate milk.

I was super high on Lance last year. I was really hoping that he would make the team.

Obviously, he didn't.

That said, I really didn't think he would make the team this year. His hustle was still there at camp, but I thought his production on the field during preseason was better last year than this.

I am happy he made the team and I hope he gets a chance to play, here or elsewhere. I'll always be a fan of him and his hustle.

Thank you for your class, Jersey Girl.

For the record, Early Doucet's career stats in real games includes a 6.4 average. Not a stellar record, but I'm not here to criticize the guy. All of the 7 WRs are impressive football players and none of the "suck" as was in the first message of this post.

How is Early Doucet so much better, bro?

Doucet was one of the best WRs in the SEC, Long not so much. That alone made Doucet a 3rd round pick and Long undrafted. Face it Long had to flat out beat Doucet he didn't, even an injured Doucet in the preseason averaged more yards a reception than Long--heck he only had 13 less yards and played 2 games.

What did Long show you in his entire history as a football player that made you think he is potentially a good NFL WR?

Look the reason he made the team is because of special teams. Guys who make the bubble part of the team do so because of the hustle so many here are deriding.

With Rolle failing to make any sort of impact on special teams, Breaston not returning kicks, Garvin injured, ect..

Long will make the team because he will return some punts and kicks and play on special teams...keeping guys like Breaston and Rolle out of there (and I don't want them in there).

He is a Cardinal and we should give him a chance to fail before we decide he sucks.

Too many years of having that blow up in our faces as guys we gave the benefit of the doubt because they were Cardinals and the coaches "liked" them were actually bad from day one and not only bad but such poor players that as soon as the Cards released them they were out of the NFL.

Now a guy has to show me something, on the field, in actual NFL games.

Early Doucet vs. Lance Long in College

In short, Early Doucet's college QB is starting for the Raiders (JaMarcus Russell).

Lance Long had about 7 QBs in college. When he was a senior at MSU, the starter was a freshman (Wesley Carroll - ever heard of him?).

Again, Lance runs a 4.35 forty yard dash. What's Doucet run, a 4.6?

All I'm saying is Lance is not a slouch and certainly doesn't suck as the original post says. They're all talented - making 53-man roster cuts is difficult every year for every NFL team.

Whisenhunt, who is far more knowledgeable than you guys, said Long was overworked at the time of the fourth preseason game. With all the injuries, you don't believe that is a reasonable explanation?

If the dude really sucks, as you guys are arguing, what does that mean about you?

You could also say that Jamarcus had Early to throw to, while Wesley had Lance Long and the argument would make just about as much sense as yours.
nobody is saying he sucks at football. it's a relative suck. Like compared to what he should be for being on this roster, he sucks.
