There is absolutly zero reason this guy is on the team.. Why? He didnt show he belonged.. Did I miss something? I dont see the love for him from the fans? Because he's a little white dude fans want him around? Cherbet was around because they had no other options.. We have Q, Fitz and Stevie.. Makes no damn sense having this many WR's..

Im more worried by this decsion than anything.. I hope Lance can rush the QB since we need some LB's..
For F's sake waht the hell? Kurt cant even hit Fitz, much less a tiny white dude .. So are we gonna line up 6 or 7 WR's? this year?

O. Jones is the better player should have made the team over Long if you are evaluating purely on a WR skill set. Long is the 2009 version of SeaBiscuit (what was that guy's real name, cant even remember??). Fans love him for the hustle and effort but the bottom line is he won't ever acutally see the field for this team.

WHAT UP Gee!? :D

I agree but maybe he provides something the team is missing in heart. Don't mean to get too Rudy-ish, but he impressed me with hustle in preseason, skillwise clearly he doesn't belong.

I'd much rather have Matt Jones as a 4th WR

Did I miss something? Clearly the guy has heart and every down effort. I've been watching him since last year on the practice squad and during this preseason. Did he miss some extraordinary amount of passes comming his way compared to the rest of the team? Which has been pretty abysmal all around if no one has noticed. >.>; In fact he has also made some fine catches and shown a bit of gusto to make a few extra yards. Sure he may want on the team so badly he doesn't know any better, but you need to at least notice the positives in every Cardinal player's game.

Whis has apparently noticed some good in the poor lil short worthless dude right? Right? Oh, and last time I checked he's the coach. With quite a bit more experience then most of us here. I'll throw my stock in with him for now if you don't mind.

I would place some money down on this, but my A$FN bankroll is currently hella low.

Has Lance not performed at all in the eyes of you guys? Just an outstanding loser who can't even do a single thing right to at least come in low on the depth chart to cover for a couple of our primary recievers who are playing hurt currently? For @ least a few games?

He's not some super stud reciever, that much is a given, and Onrea Jones would have been a better pick possibly, but right now he may just be a "confidence" pill this team needs infact. What with that *lame* give it your all every play routine he does.

He's a pretty good locker room comrade from what I've heard in general. He also seems to hustle and attempt to do his assigned job every play no matter where you stuff him. Just to qualify my reasoning.

FYI: I'm not siding with the dude to be clear, but I'm just asking for some specifics as to what it is just about this lil' white guy you guys are hatin on?

To also add, is it a belief around this forum that Lance Long would have been picked up on waivers if he wasn't on the team? Hell, since a few members here hate on him with such a burning passion it would seem no team in the NFL would even glance his way.

He sucks the left and the right ruck sack right? So then? What specifically is the reason for the hate on him from some of the posters here? You know who you are. Speak up and educate the masses.

Agree with Gee on this one; with the man crush on this guy in training camp I expected more during pre-season.

Positives - Decent hands, quick, elusive in space.

Negatives - As the games got more important (in terms of his ability to make the team) his pass catching got worse. Muffed a punt, nothing special on kick returns.

Conclusion - In an effort to save money we cut FranCrisco. I'm assuming the staff believes Long can make up for his absence (at a much cheaper price); don't see Long contributing as a receiver.

The reason's are obvious.

His versatility. He can play wr and return punts. Breaston and Howling are nicked up. Long may be the 53rd guy on the roster and might not be here by Monday.

slandirac16, right on. However, I expect he'll be around until the coaches know the health of the other WR's. So, I'm expecting he'll be on the roster through the first week, and then probably cut, as we sign veterans for the more needed positions. Coaches recognize that seven WR's are too many.

If the Cards cut guys to save money why is Brian St.Pierre still on the roster?

Sounds exactly like what posters said about Dave McGinnis and Denny Green.

I have to be honest, I dont see what the big deal is either in terms of football ability. But I also dont see the opposite man love for Jones either.

Either one is the 7th WR. Either one is inactive for 16 games never putting on pads. Depending on injuries of course. So I don't really care.

Bottom line the guy failed to produce and never will. There are so many more spare WR's I would rather have in this league than Long. Be realistic the guy is a spare!!! Wish he could contribute as a PR but he hasn't shown that yet. I think he's on the street if Garvin had not been injured. Likely will be gone once all the WR's are healthy.

We still have a few more days to shake things out before we see the final list of players and see if he stays, I wouldn't mind seeing how Long holds playing with the first string. Breaston is still recovering and struggled in our last game, I won't use any names as I don't want to jinx anyone but what happens if one or two of our top .....vers is injured during the year? Passing is what the Cards are all about until we can demonstrate that we can run the ball.

There is a tendency here when evaluating individual players to place too much on "what happened during the last game" instead of including it in a much lengthier body of work.

According to Wiz, Long had worn down being asked to do extra duty on ST's - both in coverage and also as a returner. He felt this was one reason for those uncharacteristic drops.

While I also felt O Jones quietly had a better preseason than a few other contending wideouts, the competition was close enough for things to go in a number of different directions.

If we were to use the "had a bad last game" criterion as our reason to cut Long, we'd have to consider cutting Urban and Morey as well (since they also had subpar outings).

Final point -Depending on Doucet's health situation, there will be mounting pressure to reduce the number of wideouts on our roster back down to 6 in order to bolster other positions (including D-line) so Long's situation may be somewhat tenuous and temporary. It may in part be up to the docs, Doucet himself and, for that matter: how well Long does while he's up here.

Which part of Long's 45 yard KO return sucked? He also did a great job of holding onto the football as he got whammed from the side on the tackle. The kid is tough, has good feet and he plays hard.

This is why he made the team. Return ability on kickoffs and punts. LSH is coming off a concussion and Breaston, a knee injury. In the interim, Long will be making some of the returns.

I think he is there just for the pure hustle in practice. Other than that He sucks imo.

Denver's laziness is what created that long run. Long made a good decision to come out of the end zone 7 yards deep. Denver didnt expect it, and completely let up. The holes were enormous. All Long did was run straight forward for that 45 yard return. Virtually no cuts, no broken tackles, no running the right angles, etc. Conversely, tell me what was so GOOD about his run. LSH takes that one to the house IMO.

I think Lance is on the team long enough to make sure that Urban, the Hyphen and Breaston are all healthy.

That may mean week one and at that point, I do expect him to be cut and either a vet defensive lineman, linebacker or Keileen Dykes gets put on the roster

I agree with Gee, he isn't anything special but like everyone says he is only here until everyone else is proven healthy and he could play ST and Jones(the better WR) couldn't.

Personally, I expect someone to give us a 7th rounder for him before too much time passes. He has good hands and runs fairly decent routes. He would be a #4 on many teams and see a few plays per game. Someone who is in WR need will call about him, thinking they were going to try to pick him up after cuts.

That said, I think he has the skills to be a solid NFL player and he was kept more out of a sense of not wanting to lose him than a sense of need for the team. He wasn't getting to the practice squad.

If that was all it took to be an NFL player I'm sure he would be all pro. Unfortunately, there are other factors involved like physical ability, speed and size

I think Long is very, very average. What happens around here is that people fall in love with players names they hear a lot. It happens a lot around draft time. There are certain players like Sidbury from Richmond (who actually ended up playing well this preseason), Northern Iowa DT Everette Pedescleaux, the Casey kid from Rice, etc.. 99% of us had never ever seen these small school guys play but yet we would fall in love.

Now I know we have seen Long play quite a bit not, but has he been overly impressive? No. His supposably amazing hands haven't been as good as advertised IMO. And yes he has played a ton on special teams, but other than the 45 yard kickoff return, I thought he looked average to below average as a return man.

I am happy for the kid and love to see hard workers get rewarded, but I would be shocked if this kid ever made an impact in this league. I would be happy to be wrong, I just don't see what the excitement is with this kid. I hope the rest of our receivers get healthy and we can replace Long on the roster with someone off waivers who can help the depth of our defense.

Yep. Lance could use a few steps up in those departments. Size would be a good place to start.
