He has has a rough stretch for a while now. Little to no impact plays.

Has he been worth the top 10 pick? I don’t think so.

What are your thoughts?

90 tackles 1.5 sacks 1 interception 3 forced fumble 7passes deflected, not great numbers, but its a stretch calling him a bust
As someone mentioned earlier, we need to see him with a different defensive coordinator, just 23 after all
Those are definitely disappointing numbers from the 8th pick in the draft.

No, I don't think he's a bust I just think he hasn't been put in a position to succeed. Micah Parson's has a similar skill set to Simmons and look what he is doing for Dallas as a rookie. If you are a good DC you find packages that can leverage the strengths of your players. I would love to see Simmons blitz more often. The fact that Collin's is unable to make an impact as well speaks to the common denominator - coaching/scheme or lack thereof.

#s wouldnt be that bad for a safety.

Maybe we've just used him at the wrong spot. And I know some will say he doesnt have the twitch for it, but I'd argue he's spent the last two seasons changing his body to be more like a LB. If he just focused on safety maybe it could have translated.

Lmao, Simmons & Parsons doesn’t have anywhere close the same skill-set.

You've disagreed about Simmons playing safety in the past. However, its fair to say he's closer to Derwin James in skillset than Parsons right?
He is, but without the twitch & fluidity Derwin has. Which is why I don’t know where Simmons can play to be a good player regardless of scheme.

My thing is maybe we've wasted the last two years not having him work on fluidity/twitch instead to bulk up.

FWIW, I thought Jalen Ramsey would be forced to play safety in the NFL. Its what he was his 1st 2 years in college. Not saying Simmons is Ramsey, he's not, but its possible he just would have had a better shot if they focused on developing him there day 1.

Now to your point I do remember this

Remember a pod where his sources said you'd have to build an entire defense around him/dime LB for him to really work.

Not a bust but a disappointment for sure. How much is him and how much is the DC who will not play our first round pick from last year either. I believe we will find out. My guess is that VJ and Keim are on a collision course and Keim will look for a reason to get him out.

Has he been worth a top ten pick? In a word, no, but I’m with the majority here in thinking he could well flourish under a different defensive coordinator. I just worry that the Cards will let him walk in a couple of years and we’ll all have to watch him begin his hall of fame career for another team. One more thing: the dude has got to, got to, got to stop with the inane roughing penalties. Seems like he commits one each game in which he’s on the field for considerable playing time.

Probably not, but anything other than a disappointment is laughable.

However, I’ll take back all my criticism of him if he pulls a Devin White from last season(sub-par most of the regular season, but plays like an All-Pro in the playoffs).

No. Stop. He's closer to a pro bowler than a bust

Agreed. He is not a pro bowler but closer to that than a bust. He needs to find a better role IMO but the dude is immensely talented.

For arguments sake - there wasn't a ton of talent after we picked Simmons.

Should we have picked Wirfs instead - as of today, yes. Time will tell. There were many banging the table for him.
CeeDee Lamb would have been nice as well.
Justin Jefferson - obviously. Gotta love the draft - 4 other teams took a WR before Jefferson.

Who else would you have preferred?

AJ Terrell has played phenomenal this year. Definitely him, too.

The kid is talented, jmho but I think the VJ system is too complicated for him. He's been dealing with a shoulder injury the last few games. I'd rather have him than not on this defense cause of his speed, something you cannot coach. I've read several times that Jerry Sullivan begged the Cardinals to draft Justin Jefferson & his insight on that kid was spot on. Imagine having Jefferson now that Hopkins is out, or having the 2 of them at the same time?
