But don't let anyone know, Arizona Cardinals:

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2014/05/20/lining-up-to-begin-otas/

On defense, Kevin Minter and Daryl Washington are your inside linebackers, although Larry Foote is there to step in if Washington can’t be there. On the outside, Matt Shaughnessy and Sam Acho are getting reps although I’d expect John Abraham to be the starter when he’s around (remember, all this work is voluntary right now).

Slow news period, but it's a little surprising that this isn't getting a little more attention. It was said last year that Abraham didn't get more snaps early in the season because he had to round into shape after missing a ton of offseason work due to his free agency.

It seems that I read an interview with him where he stated that he will be doing very little, (if any), OTA work this summer, due to his age and the need to keep his body healthy for the regular season. I don't know if that is strictly his idea, or if BA is in agreement with this. He says that TC will be all he needs, as he already knows the system.

Actually, Abraham was brought in to be a situation LB last year...and was pressed into starting and playing more, only after the litany of LB injuries.

that was during the old workouts a week or two ago. He is there this week for OTAs but is practicing on a limited basis.

+1

Newer articles i am sure you are getting to have him talking from OTAs saying he is doing individual drills for now and that is it to keep his body fresh and that he plans to be the starter.

The 36-year-old who's entering his second season with the Arizona Cardinals -- and his 15th overall -- didn't start this week's organized team activities working on his pass rush from the the field. He stood, under a glaring sun, watching practice in shorts, a jersey and a hat.

I know that this was a story that was told early in the season, but do we really believe the veractiy of it? The guy was capable of creating 11.5 sacks in just 10 games. Was he really not better than Lorenzo Alexander and Sam Acho in the first half of the season?

Looking at the snap counts on football outsiders, it seems like Abraham was playing more than I remembered early in the year. He played more than 50% of snaps in weeks 2 through 4.

The question, then, is when Abraham was playing so much, why wasn't he as effective early in the season than he was at the end?

maybe rhythem, groove. If you go in for spot duty you have to figure out your oppnents tendancies where as if you hit them every down all game you find cracks in what they are doing and exploit them.

if you read any of the stuff or listened to any of Buddy Morris podcasts it isn't surprising at all. A lot of the veterans will be getting less work than in years past as his main goal is to keep everyone healthy for the regular season. So veterans that don't need as much work and know their bodies and how to get ready for the season will not be pushed as hard during OTAs or preseason.

LOL. I guess I called out the parade of knee-jerk Dr. Panglosses for whom everything is as good as can possibly be at all times.

John Abraham's aging body doesn't need the speed training that is surely happening on Hardy Drive? John Abraham can't benefit from the additional installations going on during the team meetings that dominate this period of the offseason? The rest of the Arizona Cardinals can't benefit from the tutelage that Abraham can provide to Sam Acho and the rookies?

“Optimism," said Cacambo, "What is that?" "Alas!" replied Candide, "It is the obstinacy of maintaining that everything is best when it is worst.”

yeah i don't know about the whole resting veterans for the season thing - if they arent in great shape they will be injured. But, he is at OTAs and is working out in individual drills.

Hm... Thanks for the link above--I didn't see the edit. Josh Weinfuss is a hack, but I wish that Urban had been more clear in his posting about Abraham not being there.

He is predicting 20 sacks on NFLN. who knows with the #1 run defense? in the pass happy NFL, I expect a lot of Gore, Hyde and Lynch. there is a meaner than hell play on names there somewhere?

Duke Ellington is in Dwyer Straits.

You know it's the dead period in the offseason when silly discussions like this are initiated.

Yawn. Let me know when Abraham holds out from training camp.

On a positive note jurekyi just posted the cards or improving the facilities in Tempe which is long over due imo…

Mike Jurecki ‏@mikejurecki 47m
#Cards will be adding facility upgrades and enhancements in many different areas in Tempe, the project will be done in two different phases

I don't know if I like that thinking. On one hand it makes sense to keep a guy fresh. On the other hand, the older you get, the more you have to work to stay at a high level.

At his age, working more isn't the answer. Working smarter is.

I'm sure he's not the only seasoned vet around the league sitting out on the voluntary workouts. This ain't his first rodeo, something tells me the guy that's top 10 on the career sack list will be ready to go come week 1.
