Anyone know how John Coop is doing? I havent kept an eye on him and havent herd his name called which is typically a good thing. Has he finally figured it out or is he just adequete. I feel like he was shoe in for the guard job just based on the other options but he seems to be doing well.

Anyone have any insight?

Thus far, Cooper is part of an O-line that has not allowed a sack in its first two games. In addition, they have rushed for nearly 130 yards a game during that time. I think one can safely say that he is holding up his share of the load.

He's gone from playing like a UDFA to at least a 4th round draft pick...Hopefully he'll be playing in the 1st-2nd round draft pick status by season's end.

My opinion is that he has been solid but not dynamic. However, I am very pleased with the first two games from him and he should get better as the season goes on. The one surprise of the first two regular seasons for myself is how well the oline has played as a UNIT. They were my biggest area to worry about at the end of the preseason and they have played very well both in run and pass. Cooper is 1/5 of that, so he deserves a gold star along with the rest of them.

+1

He looks good for someone coming out of college, he has to take the next step and start playing like a professional. I think he has the goods to do it too.

Pulling well, holding up on the point of attack, and Minimizing the mental errors. He's playing well.

Is this the first time in his career that he's played right guard? So there is that slowing him up a bit too.

Cooper, and everyone on our line will be severely tested this upcoming week. Even when they are down, they always play us tough. I expect them to blitz relentlessly. Curious to see which team will show up this week, the one that balled week one, or the one that rolled over yesterday.

Iupati should also return this week, giving us the first glimpse of our starting lineup this year. I think Watford has played well enough to keep the starting gig... and I'm guessing the dream comes to an end for Mr Bradley Sowell this week. Thank you for your service, but Massey will fill his spot on the bench.

Go Cards!!!

He's actually playing really well but the whole line is playing amazing. Cooper playing right guard for the first time ever and Watford playing RT a new position for him I mean you can't really ask for much more from both guys I've been impressed

He's been fine playing against pretty mediocre competition at the NFL level. He's going to step up a weight class the next couple of weeks.

I think he'll be lining up against Glenn Dorsey for the most part in the base alignment with SF in a 3-4.

The dangerous pass rusher on that team is now is Aaron Lynch. Dorsey is more of a take up space guy he's supposed to keep guys off so the ILB's can make the tackles.

Hard to know, week 1 their D was excellent, week 2 horrible.

I still want to see Cooper at Center. Right guards are one of the easier plug and play spots on a football team. You need your talent in key positions. LT and C are the key spots on an O Line. Word is, that Cooper is highly intelligent, strong and nimble. An ideal center.

Iupati, Cooper, and Watford would be an amazing interior line, with Massie and Humphries coming along to man the RT spot as the year progresses. You say he's never played center. Well, he's never played RG either, but you have the intelligence and drive for the job or you don't.

He does.

Big misconception on this board. Cooper has very little experience playing center in college. He's better at guard. He's where he should be.

our favorite activity: the position change

i think at any one time, the board beleives that at least 4 of 22 starters need to be in a different position

Exactly. I would imagine that if Cooper would be such a great fit at center that the coaching staff would have him playing there. Who knows though maybe they would like to put him there, but don't believe he is ready for it.

I actually like the idea of him at center, that would be a way long term to get the best 5 linemen on the field. The way it is now, two out of humphries, watford, and massie will have to see their way out eventually. They could even put humphries at RG where he can be less mechanical than tackle and just bull people...

Big difference between playing guard and center.

Cooper still needs to play with more consistent technique...that being said, he is playing better than last year. He gets to the second level very well, but still is a little out of control when he pulls. He plays very jittery which is frustrating. St. Louis will give us a good view of where we are at.

Don't change a thing. Cohesiveness is the most important thing for this line. They will need to get better as the season goes on. The more they play as a unit the better they will get.

Knowing the strengths, weakness and tendencies of the guys on each side of you is huge.

Exactly. Get Iupati in there and keep that unit together. Cooper at center is not a during the season project.
