Has anyone on here heard of Joy Division? If not...they were an extremely popular British punk band from '77-'80, however, their very promising career got abruptly "cut short" when their lead singer Ian Curtis died of a self-inflicted hanging which was caused by him being distraught over the constant onstage breakdowns/seizures he suffered from his bout with epilepsy.... They had a pact if one of the band members passed..that they would break-up......In fact.. 2 of the band members went on to form New Order....

Just listen to their 2 studio albums "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer" along with "Substance: 1977-1980" which mainly consists of A/B-sides..... I believe if the band's career didnt come to a too premature end that they would have been even LARGER than the Sex Pistols and the Clash.... Joy Division was one of the best punk bands to incorporate some emotionally bleak/melancholy moods into their songs.....

Again.. they're one of those.... "imagine what might have been?"....

Several bands like Interpol credit Joy Division as major influences and if you want to check them out further..here's the 'nets ultimate source regarding them.....

Moby loves doing covers of Joy Division songs in concert.

Oh wow.... that would be interesting to hear....

FYI... Joy Division recorded the original "Dead Souls" that NIN covered on the "Crow" soundtrack.... Lord.... difficult to decide which version I like the best....

I always thought of Joy Division as the grandparents to emo with the Cure being the parents. I was never a fan though. Just my 2 cents.

This is true.... Ironically...I was going to post a thread dedicated to the Cure some time this week......

What I'm impressed though about them is if you were to just listen to any of their albums for the first time today w/out knowing that all of their songs were recorded between '77-'80..you would swear that these are newer....

In fact.. "Substance 1987" was the "blue print" that inspired the compilation of the Joy Division's Substance '77-'80.....

Have you listened to Joy Division before? If not...I would highly recommend for you or anyone else to check-out that and their 2 full-length studio albums as well.... Even just to hear the original "Dead Souls" is worth the price alone......

Yes I have listened to Joy Division. I just thought it was funny that you wrote this thread and I had that CD in my car. I watched a show a while ago, maybe a year ago? On Ian Curtis.

Yeah.. it seems like its been "twi-light zone" for me when I post these threads dedicated to certain bands... Such as last week I posted on regarding the Fixx and I guess jw7 had heard one of their songs on the radio for the first time in awhile or even the INXS thread when it was announced that theyre doing that pathetic "find a replacement for Michael Hutchence reality tv show".....

Anyways....ir's again one of those "what could have happened" if Ian Curtis didnt suffer his "demise"... They had just amassed so much potential in such a brief time.....Just incredible how their albums sound.....

have you tried Electronic? couple of the new order lot and a decent sound!

Isn't New Order the surviving members?

I used to have Import LP with Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Hey Banky, what's with the ********** rage you seem to feel for emo kids?

it's a healthy rage. emo kids have this privileged sense of uniqueness, which is ironically highlighted (and discredited) by their very boring sameness.

to them, their chuck taylors and black nail polish applied defiantly during their english lit class (which they will later [and secretly] diligently work their asses off to pass, only to pretend that they got good grades because they really *get* emily dickinson) are the motivations for whatever it is they decide to "emote" about next.

emo kids and emo music are two separate and distinct entities.
