I was one of those who always thought "The coaching staff must have seen something in Kolb far and away above and beyond what they saw in Skelton to spend that much for him (in compensation & salary), and eventually that would play itself out". Last week my hope was seriously diminished, and after tonight it's all gone.

Phrazbit (I think) posted this article a couple months back: http://allpurposeroto.com/articles/?p=1238. Most of the article I was like whatever, but one part jumped out at me when the author was referencing Michael Lombardi's evaluation that Kolb had a "low eye level". That was the first time I remembered seeing something that suggested a "mechanical" deficiency related to Kolb's lack of pocket presence last year vs. his lack of experience with the offense, crappy O-line pass blocking, etc. The article ultimately suggests that Kolb would turn into Captain Checkdown 2.0. It seems like Lombardi's initial evaluation was spot on, and with the injuries, lack of trust in the line, whatever - the low eye level problem has gotten much worse since he's been here. Heck, Captain Checkown 2.0 would be a massive improvement at this point.

Who knows, maybe Kolb gets in a different circumstance (like say going to a different team with a better line as a backup and getting a shot) and actually makes something of himself. But in this circumstance, in this system and behind this line, I've lost hope.

I know. The truth hurts doesn't it?

Guess it would hurt if there was something truthful in your inferences.

"The quarterback competition remains undecided after Kevin Kolb

had a slow finish after a quick start and John Skelton
You must be registered for see images
had hardly any work at all."

I wonder what would have to have happened for the QB battle to become anymore conclusive. 3 straight games now the competition has not been any semblance of a competition... Skelton has looked good/average in each, and Kolb has been an unmitigated disaster.

It seems if Kolb had shown a pulse they would have gladly handed him the job, no matter how much he got outplayed.

Yeah, but did you call Dennis Johnson, Michael Stone and Mao Tosi all potential draft steals? See, I need all the credit I can get.

If Ryan Williams and Senio Kelemente pan out, maybe my friends will forgive me for saying Dwight Freeney was too small to be anything but a nickel rusher...:bang:

Don't feel too bad. ESPN magazine picked Mao Tosi as one of their 5 top sleeper picks in that years draft. Used a half page raving about him.

The guy had everything you'd want in a Defensive lineman. Except the desire to play in the NFL. Some guys are just like that.

LOL that was the year the Cards 2nd day draft was based on unusual names. Mao Tosi, Sekou Sanyika, and Jabari Issa.

Yeah, I quoted Lombardi saying that last year. He went on an ESPN podcast right at the end of the lockout and when Kolb was mentioned and the potential trade market he went on and on about how Kolb did not stand out on film, talked about the "low eye level" thing and said he thought he would end up in Seattle and that they would be back in the QB market soon after.

Personally, I thought he seemed to be like a right handed Matt Leinart when I saw him playing for Philly. Just a bit more mobile. I was against the trade because I thought he would be extremely mediocre and have a low ceiling and I didnt want the Cards to commit to such an average prospect.

I really never imagined he would be this bad.

Well it's clear the whiz likes Skelton hence pulling him after barely playing before he had the chance to do anything stupid! That way he can just reference the stats when he names him the starter. I think it's BS I am fine with Skelton but dude has got to play and get in game action to learn I still have very little confidence he can even read a defense! If we're gonna roll with skelton quit f-ing coddling him!
Get a clue... watch some games instead of making blind comments. He didn't get 6 wins last year without reading defenses. He does it much better than sucking Kolb.

He is toast. Saw this quote, not much more needs to be said:

"He is skittish. He is scared back there. Anytime anybody gets close to him he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman you love a quarterback like that. He ain't even trying to look at the routes no more. He is playing attention to us and you ain't going to get nothing done like that." -- Tommy Kelly

stop with the 6-2 crap the defense was the reason we won the second half of the season and the whole reason Skelton had to make some comebacks is cause he put us in the whole early with some ridiculous throws an interceptions. The team gave up far less points in the second half of the season than they did in the first half.
Another completely clueless comment... how many points did defense scored??? How many long drives did defnese put together???

Stop with the defense is the reason we won games in the 2nd half of the season crap. It's an Urban myth. I've already proven that the Defense didn't win any games. None. They scored zero points. They gave DDeuce very few short fields. Forced one more turnover in the last 9 games than they did in the first 7. We won exactly the same # of games on a PP21 punt return in the 2nd half of the season as we did the first half.

The defense kept us in the games against crummy offenses. John Skelton and his clutch play and the offense won those games against top defenses.

Spouting the company line doesn't change the facts.
Absolutely...

I feel bad for the guy. It must suck to dissapoint everyone like he has but its not really his fault everyone thought he was better than he was. Hopefully someone else gives him a roster spot but i think hes done here as well.

I'm not normally one to say this about players because it can be surprising when they "get" it, but Kevin Kolb is done. Over the first two games of the preseason I thought I could chalk it up to rust and just getting back into the flow of things, but he is broken. Maybe he was always this way deep down, but he cannot stand in the pocket and make a throw. The protection has not been great this game, but he has numerous occasions where he has held onto the ball for 3 to 4 seconds and taken a hit when the ball needs to come out. There isn't an offensive line in this league that could protect Kolb at this point, and I am of the mind to cut our losses, sign a vet or make a trade, and cut Kolb loose.

He is done.

Yes, yes he is.

He's in a battle for the backup job...

...with Lindley.

And Lindley has better pocket presence. And that part is NOT a joke.

Daren Urban is biased towards Kolb for whatever reason. It is obvious reading his articles and blogs. He went out of his way last week to make sure he pointed out how Skelton admitted he screwed up a play call in the huddle since there was not much obvious to point out.

Yeah, he's done. It's time to name Skelton the starter and bring some semblance of order to the offense. The perpetual QB battle can't be helping.

I was all about Kolb when he got here, but that Tommy Kelly quote pretty much sums it up. Kolb is so uncomfortable out there that it's becoming uncomfortable to watch him. Maybe he turns it around in a new environment, but I doubt it. He looked like a broken man out there tonight.

The system claims another victim.

Sucks up until the point where he sees that cool 20 mill sitting in his bank account. It could be worse. If/when he's cut he'll find another team. Leinart has managed to find a few.

Yes, he will be around for years. He's actually had a couple of really big passing days. That's all it takes for NFL teams to give a QB multiple chances. Everybody is so desperate to find one. QBs and left handed pitchers hang on for a long time if they've ever shown anything of note.

I only saw 2 plays of the game when NFLN did a cut in to the game and after the 1st play I could tell Kolb is done. He dropped back, had a perfectly good pocket, waited about 1/2 second and then started to scramble to his left and ran right into the DE. I replayed it to see what he could be seeing, there was nothing. It was a perfectly good pocket.

The next play he got sacked for about 10 yards on an uncovered blitz. He's done.

When the safety happened live I thought the line collapse and Kolb failed to find a hot read, and someone else claimed that no receivers were looking back, but watching the replay... its a perfect example of him not even glancing at his receivers from the instant he feels pressured.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=320817022

The very first clip in the highlight reel is the safety. He drops back and has Doucet beating his man on an out route on the left and looking back, Floyd also does a quick turn and is looking at Kolb but is covered, Smith is absolutely wide open in the flat on the right.

He had 3 options, all 3 guys were looking back at him, the "receivers not looking for the ball" excuse on that play (which Wolfe threw out there) is totally bunk. Its not that guys are not ready prepared to make a catch, its that Kolb makes no effort to make a throw... and in the endzone no less. What does he think he is going to do there? His instincts are just awful.

I think Kolb should've done what Timm Rosenbach did and just said, "Man, I can't take getting hurt like this, I'm off to the ranch." I think he's willing himself to try hard and be a good teammate, but deep down he's lost the nerve.

IF you saw him talking to Palmer after the game on the field he almost looked like he's expecting to be released. He's standing there in a visor and he looked older than Palmer.

Carson was almost giving him a pep talk. I feel sorry for Kolb he appears to have completely lost his nerve, at this point he needs to sit for his own safety, he's going to get hurt seriously the way he's playing now.

The problem is that Urban is a mouthpiece for the team now, which makes his support of Kolb even more scary. CKW also said they couldn't evaluate Skelton because he had so few reps. I'm terrified that either CKW is convinced he needs to start Kolb, or that the FO is trying to force him to start Kolb. The Urban quote really, really worries me.

Kolb has no confidence and looks scared. He couldn't even throw the ball away last night when he needed to.

Done for sure.

Stout's right on this. Urban isn't going to say anything outside the party line on Kolb; until Whis and Graves cut him outright in two weeks, we're going to hear that he's coming around, that he needs to be more comfortable in the offense, that he's looking better in practices than he's doing in games, etc.

Urban was running the party line that Leinart was the starter right up until he was cut.

I don't know. Didn't seem like there was much Kolb could do on that 3rd and 14 play for a safety. I think the bigger problem was ending up at 3rd and 14 in the first place. The problem was that he put himself in that impossible situation. He has to get rid of the ball quicker and not take that intentional grounding penalty the play before.
