Leinart negotiations stall!!

Leinart negotiations stall

Negotiations between the agents for first-round pick Matt Leinart and the Cardinals have stalled, and Tom Condon, Leinart's chief negotiator, had plans to leave the Valley Sunday.

Cardinals players were due to report to training camp today at 5 p.m. in Flagstaff and the first practice is Monday morning.

It appears it will take a small miracle for Leinart to be in camp on time.

Condon declined to discuss negotiations, but he did say, "We've tried very hard to successfully complete all our negotiations with our players at the appropriate time. We'd like to see that happen with Matt."

Condon works for Creative Artists Agency, which has six first-round picks and 10 total in the first three rounds of the draft. All but Leinart are in camp.

It's a bit of a surprise that negotiations are going so poorly given that the ninth pick, Detroit linebacker Ernie Sims, and the 11th pick, Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, have signed.

Leinart was the 10th overall pick, and those other two deals should give the Cards parameters for his contract.

With first-round draft choice Matt Leinart scheduled to be throwing to Arizona Cardinals receivers on Monday, the initial day of training camp practice, the agent for the former Southern California quarterback instead threw in the towel on contract negotiations.

At least for now.

"We've been [in the Phoenix area] since Friday and couldn't get it done," agent Tom Condon said Sunday night, after three days of face-to-face negotiations failed to produce an agreement for the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner. "We're hung up on a lot of issues. It's time to go home."

The 10th overall choice in the draft, and probably a bargain in that slot after he posted a brilliant 37-2 record as the Trojans' starter for three seasons, Leinart missed the team's Sunday evening deadline for reporting to training camp at Flagstaff, Ariz. The Cardinals' first practice is Monday morning, and it will take a major change in the two sides' bargaining positions for him to be on the field for that session.

Leinart has been in Phoenix for the past few days and has actually spent time throwing with some Arizona receivers. It is not known if Leinart, who wanted to be in the vicinity in the event of a contract accord, plans to stay in the area with the negotiations seemingly at an impasse.

Leinart is expected to battle two-year veteran John Navarre for the backup job behind starter Kurt Warner. The consensus is that the Cardinals chose Leinart to groom him as the team's quarterback of the future.

During his celebrated college career, Leinart completed 807 of 1,245 passes for 10,693 yards, with 99 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions.

Condon would not discuss areas of disagreement in the talks. But one is believed to be the length of the contract, with the Cardinals holding firm on a six-year proposal and Leinart preferring five years. Teams can sign players chosen in the top half of the first round to contracts with a maximum term of six years.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what to make of the situation. The Cardinals have been offering market value to draft pics for the past few years, so I am not sure what the hang up is here.

Sorry to stray off topic, AzWins23, but I've seen that countdown clock a number of times, and I keep meaning to ask: how long is "∩a∩" hours?

A lot of issues? My guess is money and length of contract. They want top five draft money even though Leinart fell to 10th pick.

My opinion? Sign him to five years. If he performs like we all hope he will, re-up him.

Get a deal done. Call me paranoid, but I don't see Warner lasting past game seven.

I kind of thought the hang up would be that the Cards would want to lock him up for a long time. It seems kind of funny though, because if Leinert ends up being our franchise starter and we end up wanting to build the future around him, I sort of doubt a six year contract with what a number ten pick is going to sign at, is going to keep the peace anyway for all of six years. I'm sure both sides think they have to have whatever it is thats creating so much controversy.

Okay, now I think you're just trying to bait me. As a result, I must insist that it be any day but Thursday.

Leinart a no-show at Arizona training camp
Associated Press

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Matt Leinart did not report to training camp Sunday as contract negotiations cooled between the Arizona Cardinals and their first-round draft pick.

Even as he vowed to stay out of the negotiations, coach Dennis Green blamed Leinart's camp for the failure to reach agreement.

"We have an excellent deal on the table," said Green, who did not provide details.

Green spoke to reporters after the rest of the team checked in to its dormitory at Northern Arizona University. Players were asked to report Sunday, but Green said Leinart won't be considered late unless he misses the first practice at 8:45 a.m. Monday.

Arizona appeared close to a deal with Leinart when his agent, Tom Condon, came to Phoenix Friday to meet with club officials. But Condon left the Valley after the sides did not meet Sunday.

"Like all of our other clients, we want to get Matt in as quickly as possible," Condon said in a telephone interview. "We always work toward that end. We're football fans like everybody else. We're anxious to see him on the field."

Condon's firm, Creative Artists Agency, represents five other first-round draft picks. All are in camp.

Green noted that quarterback Jay Cutler, selected one rung below Leinart, recently signed with Denver. The player chosen immediately ahead of Leinart, linebacker Ernie Sims, signed with Detroit Sunday.

Those deals should have provided a framework for Leinart and the Cardinals as they worked on a contract, but the sides appeared to be far apart Sunday night. Green said it wasn't the club's fault.

"I would assume that an inability to get the contract done is just some continuation of looking at what possibilities are from their end," Green said.

Leinart, a former Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Southern California, wouldn't be the first high Cardinal draft pick to hold out. But Green defended the team's dealings with recent first-round selections.

"Larry Fitzgerald got a very good deal, and he was our No. 3 pick a few years ago," Green said. "Antrel Rolle got a very good contract last year at the No. 8 pick.

"We have to understand that Matt Leinart, who we are very high on and feel is going to be a very good quarterback for us and have a great impact on the National Football League, also would have been offered a very good contract," Green said. "We've signed every other player, so there's only a certain amount of money that's available."

Green, who called Leinart "a gift" when the club selected him last April, said he wanted his top draft choice here to compete with John Navarre for the back-up quarterback job.

"Everybody has to get better by being here," Green said. "That's the best way to play. But if a guy is not here, you understand that it's not that he doesn't want to play for the Arizona Cardinals, it's that he feels he has not been able to sign a contract that we've offered."

Leinart has been assigned a dormitory room with starting quarterback Kurt Warner. For one night, at least, Warner had a single room.

Asked if he'd like to see Leinart in camp, Warner said, "Sure. Let's get everybody here. We don't want to start this thing without anybody.

"As a young quarterback, you never want to miss any time, especially as short as training camp is and the limited number of snaps that are there to be had," Warner said. "I know he wants to be here, and we all want to have him here. I'm sure he's only a couple of hours away, just waiting for that call to come up. Hopefully it won't be too long."

Bah! The usual agent speak...

Looks like Condon is looking to get something outside the framework set by Sims and Cutler.

Condon is most likely going after he should have been the number one QB picked money. I can't blame the Cards for protecting a huge investment with the max years that they can do. Condon on the other hand wants another paycheck sooner. Matt will be in camp this week I'd bet on it. There just are so many number 10 dollars to go around.

It is not like he is going to be starting week one. Let's get the deal done before the end of the week, and we will be fine.

On the other hand, let's get the deal done now, and not have to worry about it.

I hate to say I told you so, but I saw this coming a month ago. Cards need to hold the line here. I'm sure the biggest hang up is that Leinarts Agent sees him as a "Heisman Trophy" Qb and feels he deserves more than a number 10 "slot".

Pure speculation, most of the holdouts in this organization's past can be mostly blamed on the front office.

Yes, if you want to go back a few years. It's a new Cardinal regime. Great free agents have been brought in and signed. "Core " players have been given extensions and draft picks have been signed on time and in camp.

This one falls on the player and his agent.

Oh, and in FOOTBALL opinions.....I think Leinart will probably push his agents to get him a contract so he can push for the #2 job and put himself in a spot to learn as much as he can this year and take over in a year.......and he'll want to actually SEE a paycheck.
