This is where both sides have to get creative with regard to Leinart's compensation if he becomes one of the league's elite QBs during his first six years with the club. Incentives piled on incentives will help. Guaranteed money is another major factor...as are player options and roster bonuses.

A 6 year contract with good guaranteed money and piles and piles of incentive bonuses is the way to go IMO.

I just want him in camp sooner as opposed to later. Given Warner's injury history, I want Leinart to have as many reps as possible.

Geessh, every year there's somebody wanting more than offered. What ever happened to EARNING your way? I know I know, it's a husiness.
I'm not worried about Matt signing, he'll get into camp sooner than later, Poston leaving town is a ploy to get what he wants. As soon as Matt sees the team on TV playing and moving along without him, he'll get antsy enought to push his agent to sign. I don't care about the nitty gritty of the contract either, it'll get done when Matt wants to get into camp and be part of this team bad enough

I totally agree with you! And if it's later, so be it. As someone already stated, we do have our starter in camp and I'm not one to already have him injured before the season starts.

Bob Kemp was suggesting on his show that Lineart wanted Vince Young money. If true, write off Lineart for this year. This holdout could go into next March.

And, if that's the case, we write Leinart off all together because he goes back to the draft, right?

Won't happen. Let me say that again. Won't happen.

He may hold out much of camp, but he'll sign. They ALWAYS do.

That's exactly what I was trying to tell Bobcat Skkorp. If he is really set on guaranteed money around 25 million, as opposed to his slot, it's going to be a heck of a holdout. There's just no way the Cards can set a precedent like that.

Yes, he'll realize that 13 million in hand is not too bad. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if he lost endorsements if he didn't play this year.

And, if his draft stock dropped from consensus #1 in 2005 to #10 in 2006 after leading a football team to the national championship game, what do you think might happen to it after sitting out of ffotball for a year? Good luck trying to get top-10 money when you're drafted at the bottom of the round.

right - and Reggie Bush almost made it back into next year's draft... oh wait, that's right, he's already in camp.

Sheesh Skkorp - all of this is posturing --it might be a holdout, but he ain't going back into the draft where AGAIN he'll be the number 2 QB taken behind Brady Quinn. This'll get done - it's just going to take time.

I'm sorry but the Cardinals have to do whatever it takes to sign Lineart. If they don't and its a prolonged holdout all the good will/publicity that they have gained with the new stadium and Edge signing goes out the window. Everyone will be saying "same old Cardinals". This team can't afford to look bad by not signing the guy who is supose to be the franchise quarterback. The Cardinals don't have the luxury of saying that he is asking for too much money.

Can't happen mathematically. The rookie pool is larger for teams drafting higher. Young was a #3. Leinart a #10. You can't get blood out of a stone.

My biggest problem with Cardinal hold-outs over the years...

They always seem to get hurt!!! :bang:

The "hold-out" player must feel this sense of urgency to prove to their coaches and fellow teammates that they are on board now after finally getting into camp. This "urgency" seems to always come back to bit them in the ass. The Cardinals, you would think, would recognize this pattern and sign these guys so they can play at least half the games their rookie season before getting injured. If your gonna pay 1st rounders big money...wouldn't you rather see them on the field rather than on "injured reserve"?

If the Cards don't want to offer a QB premium, then it's them being stupid. I know that Graves hasn't handled a QB contract since we drafted Josh McCown and the end of the first day, but in this day and age, Top 10 QB picks get a little extra.

I agree, you take care of a guy with the track record of Matt Leinart if his demands are not too outrageous. This especially becomes vital when your starting QB is a china doll and you're trying to change a national perception of being frugal.

I'm not worried about it, the guy's been here all summer and has been studying NFL defenses for a couple years now. If he misses a couple practices it ain't the end of the world especillay when Green seems to be running a pretty light camp this season. Get him in before next week and I'll be happy.

I don't give a damn about frugality so long as we change the culture of losing...which means we start winning. Hell, if we have the lowest payroll in the NFL and are consistantly in the playoffs, so be it.

Many would argue one has a lot to do with the other.

There is your problem right there. You are getting your football info from Bob Kemp. You want baseball info he is your guy, but football, he has got to be the least knowledgeable insider in the state.

You were definitely being more prophetic in that thread than people gave you credit for.

Which is what? There's no evidence to suggest that Condon is looking more closely at Young's contract as a basis for Leinart's than they looked at Cutler's. That's what Bobcat's "prophecy" was, and then he dropped Dennis Erickson's name.

It doesn't take Nostradamus to predict that the Cards' #1 pick would holdout into training camp.

I will say this, I really do think that Leinart wants to be here.

He got himself a house not in scottsdale like everyone was telling him to but he bought a home closer to the training facility. Pretty much 5 days a week every week since the end of OTA's, he has been at the training facility without a contract throwing balls and looking at film with Todd Watkins and Leonard Pope, all the way up to this past Friday. Those arent signs of a player that doesnt want to be here.

I dont think this will go one for to long. I think he is in camp on time to play in the August 5th Scrimmage at the new stadium.

Good info, never heard a lot of this stuff. Unlike many of the doom-and-gloomers around here, I knew Leinart would be fine. The guy had every opportunity to party his career down the tubes but always managed to stay professional and get better. Reminds me of Derek Jeter in some ways.
