Defense: F. No sacks, no turnovers. Nothing. Wide open wide receivers all day, especially in the red zone, showcasing the softest zone coverage this side of a Pop Warner league. The schemes were poor. Aggressiveness was lacking. Leadership was non-existent (where was Dexter Jackson today?). If Rod Graves doesn't add three free agents this week, two defensive linemen and another defensive back, one would really have to question his administrative decision making. If Dave McGinnis and Larry Marmie don't change their defensive preparation and approach, they will be searching for jobs this winter. Absolutely horrible coaching in this one.

Interesting Note: Dave McGinnis must have told color commentator Tim Green over the weekend that his defensive philosophy is to "defend the run while rushing the passer." That's the classic Warren Sapp quote that I and others urged the Cardinals to adopt last year when criticizing Mac's vanilla read and react defense. Green kept emphasizing Mac's supposed philosophy, despite the fact that the defensive line rarely if ever got penetration. Notice how many times Joey Harrington ran the fake hand off, fake reverse play, pass...sitting on a three step drop and was not even breathed on once.

Offense: C-. Good numbers for Blake. Awesome numbers for Boldin. Decent numbers for Emmitt. But, as we all know, numbers don't necessarily win you football games. The fact remains that this offense was out of sync and short on focus all day. Jeff Blake managed the clock like a rookie. Very surprising performance from him...for a veteran of his years. Really lost focus and concentration on numerous occasions...in the first half it was on delay of games and time outs...in the second half, it was on his throws...other than the homerun trail pass to Boldin, Blake was generally way off the mark the rest of the game...perhaps the most frusrating (other than the two inexusable turnovers) was the series he botched, up 21-14, when he missed a wide open Kevin Kasper on second and eight and threw behind an open Anquan Boldin on third down.

The offensive line sputtered and underachieved all day. They should be fined for their performance.

Freddie Jones was a factor. Looks stronger physically and mentally.

The two starters at WR, Foster and Gilmore were complete non-factors. Bryant Johnson's untimely drop on a perfectly thrown fade at the end zone was just what we feared about Johnson coming out of Penn State...great athlete with erratic concentration.

Special Teams: F. Obviously. Horrendous, even Scott Player, who played his worst game in ages.

Coaching: F. Jerry Sullivan called a pretty good game, other than that, the coaching was about as bad as one could imagine. This team looked disorganized and disheveled all afternoon.

Personnel decisions: Sorry, Fred Wakefield and Russell Davis...they just are not NFL quality starters and are questionable backups at best. The team is getting virtually nothing from both of those players...which constitiutes one half of the defensive line...and 2/11ths of the defense.

A WR with experience needs to be added. Of course, we've been saying this all summer.

McCown should have been given the last series. Blake was visibly exhausted and if McCown is really the backup as most of us question, he should at least get any game experience possible.

Silver Lining: Anquan Boldin. Fearless competitor. Great hands and a sixth sense for finding daylight. Emmitt Smith still has plenty in his tank...what a great play he made on the play he turned a near five yard loss into a 19 yard scamper. Coby Rhinehart made a couple of excellent breajups on third downs. Calvin Pace defends the run very well already.

right now I would start kasper and boldin..boldin after 1 game has probably established himself as our #1 receiver. Kasper seemed to get open more than gilmore and foster. ..although I am not sold on kasper as a kickoff returner (we should move gilmore to 2nd team receiver and gunner on punts and kickoff returner). The best I have seen gilmore play in the NFL was last season on the punt gunner job.

I do not know where to start on the waiver wire after todays game...obviously dline - but you cannot ignore corner, special teams (coverage guy/gunner), safety (for a backup since lucas is injured), and wide receiver. I do not think we will do anything on the oline..because roundtree, davis will probably be back at some point and garcia is back by game 5.

I'd only disagree by your rating the D an F. By this I mean how can you rate anything down with our specials teams.

I mean if the D is an F, ST must be N, or F------ (lots of minus signs)

I think Sullivan called a pretty good game.I think the loss of Big hurt the running game. Can Dishman get any fatter? He's terrible. Blake gave us the kind of game Cards fan are used to at QB.Pretty good stats but the killer mistakes.I was not impressed at all with any of our WR's,other than Boldin, obviously. You know in the coming weeks Boldin will have a tougher time as teams gear to stop him. But,it's only 1 game and maybe the other WR's will step up.There is no defense for the defense.

To even think that the Cards need 3 additions from the WAIVER WIRE, just shows you how thin they are.

The Cards lack of urgency (on and off the field) mystifies me. $14 mil under the cap, yet they chose to sit on it. Well, now it's too late.

Boldin now gives me reason for hope. They had better get someone beside him next year.

It will be an interesting week.

Special teams, horrible. Scary. I get queasy everytime we have a kickoff or punt. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH GRAMMATICA????? WHY CAN'T HE KICK FURTHER THAN THE 10 ON KICKOFFS?!??!?!

Aside from that - I agree, this feels like a 2 receiver team, and one of them is a tight end. Gilmore? Who is he? Where was he?

I enjoyed a couple of classic #22 runs. Thought D. Barrett played ok.

Turnovers killed us. This was our game to lose - and we did via turnovers.

I agree that the defense gets an F.

42 points, no INT's, no sacks, no big plays. Wakefield, Davis,Hill, McKinnon, and ADRIAN WILSON!! looked absolutely horrible today. = F

Russel Davis, Wakefield, Hill need to go !!!

And Gilmore is not an NFL WR. he has to go too!
B.J. should have made a catch!

Peace

Knowing full well that the defense would be handicapped this entire season, you would think that the Cardinals "brass" (if we can call them that) would've gotten a kicker that would pin opposing teams DEEP. Make them drive the lenght of the field. NOT from the 35 yard line! GEEEZ!

Another mysterious Cardinal (management) blunder!

Dont forget Raynoch Thompson. I know he is the "golden boy" on this board but can someone teach him how to cover a guy?

Not only are Russell Davis and Wakefield not NFL material, neither is Gilmore. And NEITHER is Mac. He just isn't. He looks scared out there when the game heats up.

Oh, and had we signed Wilkenson, we would have won this game.

Wilkenson should have been signed, he looked very good today. I was very impressed with our offense today. I hope now everyone will agree with me that our CBs suck. It's to late to draft a cb now but next year we need to draft two in the first two rounds. Our pass defense just plain sucks. If we had a defense we can compete. I know hoping Graves trades for a real CB is not going to happen but come draft day he better do something if not sign someone in the offseason. One good thing, it looks like we will have an exciting season on offense. Boldin is the man! If Blake hadn't pulled three Jake Plummers we might have won this game. He did play well, but when he screwed up, man did he screw up. He did make Jake look good today. Put it this way, if we can make Detroit look this good, just imagine what we can do for a good team.

Nobody is going to trade us a good CB.

Blake looked far better than Jake, he was running for his life back there

The D was not good but they did not give up 42 points. Two turnovers by Blake and a fumbled punt led to 21 points. The Lions had great field position all day.

Not defending a poor performance but the D had a lot of help losing this one. I have never seen our special teams this bad and we desperately need someone who can kickoff passed the 15 yard line.

The secondary should get an "incomplete" because they are all alone out there. NO CB's or safeties can cover NFL receivers when the QB has all day to find someone.

I'd give the defense a "D" because they were hamstrung by the special teams.

The CBs were pretty decent in man coverage, but they were lost as stray sheep in the zones, especially in the red zone. The rule of thumb for zone coverage is that if a receiver runs in your zone, you lock him up man for man until he leaves the zone...at which point you must communicate with the defender next to you and recover back to your zone. Our DBs stood there in cement. If there is little pass rush, playing a soft zone is like handing the opponents easy TDs...which is what we saw.

FYI... for those who might have paid attention to the LIONS, before all of the predictions that it would be an easy win:

Harrigton was sacked TWICE last year...

So the fact that the CARDS joined the rest of the league in not being able to pressure him effectively, is hardly reason for going into gibbering hysterics.

We would have won, nevertheless, with halfway decent kicking; better ST coverage... and let's not forget 6 procedural penaltiies...etc.

P.S. WALTER - do some of us a favour and stop continuously writing "we" into your analysis... when the "we" is in fact... your opinion.
