So if only one candidate is going to "win" it sort of implies some if not all of the others were going to die.
I "think" that someone other than Jacob's replacement is going to get off of the island based on this post -
http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2234637&postcount=433
Seems like if he was going to save any of them it would have been Lapidus to fly the plane.
IMO MIB doesn't need anything physical (ship, plane, sub) to get off of the island. He just needs to make sure that Jacob and any replacement for him is eliminated. At that point, he would be free. Again IMO.
They all accepted too easily that Locke said we can't take the plane there may be more C4 on it, the C4 was the size of a brick it would seem pretty easy to find if wanted to look for more but they all just immediately accepted ok lets take the sub.
When I saw that happening (MIB finding the C4) I thought that they would be idiots to get on the plane for the reason that MIB said. 30,000 ft in the air is a bad place to discover that you missed a brick of C4.

I'm not so sure about that. Seems Kate was a candidate, but has been eliminated from the running for some reason. She's still kicking.

Anyone thing Locke is the one who shot Kate in the first place? Just to get Jack to put her on the sub?

He wasn't asking whether he thought she was a candidate but if he used her to set the trap by shooting her.
Why would shooting her set the trap? They were all going to get on the sub without MIB anyway. Shooting Kate didn't help MIB's plan. If anything, it interfered with it. So the only reason he might shoot her, which IMO he didn't have anything to do with, is to make sure that she was put on the sub. But none of that makes sense because he doesn't think that she's a candidate.

Jack wasn't getting in the sub until Kate was shot, that's all I'm saying.

It makes sense because he knows Jack loves Kate, so he'd save her at all costs, so he wouldn't just leave her outside the sub, he'd get her away from the guns, etc.

Oh. OK. Now that is a great point. Sorry, I read what you wrote as him shooting her to make sure that she was put on the sub.

Wow. Good episode, but mega-carnage. I had been spoiled on some of the deaths, but they were handled better than I expected. BTW, stay away from spoilers, kids! :)

Not this spoiler, but the general ones on the web!

I was actually surprised that Frank bit the dust. I kept wondering why they were keeping him around this long. Figured he would play some big role in the end.

Not sure why we keep using the "
" tag about an episode that's already happened, but ...

I think the writers originally had a bigger plan for Frank but ran out of time.

Ok, so now Jack, Sawyer, Hurley and Kate will go looking for Desmond.

It seems fairly obvious that even with those "guards", Richard, Ben and Miles were the ones that put the C4 on the plane.

And Widmore is trying to "protect" the candidates in order to defeat the MIB.

Now the big question is why does the MIB care at all whether Claire lives or dies? That was strange.

hmmm, this didn't even cross my mind. could be... but why? If Flocke can't be killed, why would they load the plane up to kill all the candidates? Wouldn't that ensure Flocke could get away?

Not to kill the candidates but to prevent FLocke from physically leaving the island. Everyone has been lead to believe that FLocke needed the candidates with him to leave the island, thus the plane is rigged to be destroyed. I don't think that he can until Jacob's replacement is dead. That's how he knew that some had survived the sub sinking, because he was still stuck. IMO, of course.

Richard even point blank said a few episodes ago that he was going to go blow up the plane.

oh yeah... but I guess that begs the question, where did Richard get C4? And why didn't he just blow it up when he had the chance?

Maybe he keeps Claire as a pawn in case Jack and/or Kate survived the sub?

My theory was that Ben had a stash of it back at Old Dharmaville and that's where they got it.

As far as blowing it up right away, that's a good question. Maybe they were waiting until MIB got on the plane with the others to fly away.

If Ben/Richard did NOT put it on the plane and Widmore did, first, WHY did he put C4 on the plane, and second, why didn't HE just blow it up right away? I fear it may just be a simple plot device.

that's what I was thinking when I first watched it. i was actually pretty bored throughout the first half of this episode because it felt like it was just a "let's go to the plane... now let's go to the sub..." kind of filler stuff but the last 20 minutes were power packed, both in the flashforwards and the island stuff.

It wasn't too bad for me, but I do think the necessary 'filler/move people around' scenes have been more obvious this season.

Part of that is knowing the end is nearing, and a desire for the 'important' stuff.

I think you guys are reading too much into Flocke "keeping Claire alive." The sub was already gone. It's not like chasing down a bus. I don't think he really cares.

Me too. The first 2/3 of the show felt like LOTR. Bunch of people walking/running. But then I remembered that's how much of the show has always been written ...

EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

JACK walks through the jungle, followed by LOCKE, KATE, SAWYER, and HURLEY ...

I bet they have a little macro string saved so they can just drop that in at the top of every teleplay.

did anyone find it strange that neither Sun or Jin cared that their son was going to grow up with both parents dead?

YES! Sorry for being so dramatic but that was my first thought. Yeah, them dying sucks but what about the kid? One parent would be better than none.

They probably just figured that Kate would take care of him. ;)
