yes but teams treat their 1st rounders like gold. However a good team that is expecting to be drafting late in round 1 may take a flyer on him. I don't think there is anyway he'd be around in round 3. I think the Cards would be smart to put a 2nd round claim on him. If they finish 8-8 or 9-7 they would be picking in the latter half of round 2 next year and he would be a great value at that selection. Plus you get him a year early.

Precisely.

Big interest

July 7
Sacramento Bee (scroll down) (registration required): "The 49ers will attend offensive tackle Jared Gaither's workout Monday at the University of Maryland. The 6-9, 350-pound Gaither is believed to be the top prospect in Thursday's supplemental draft."

I am sure that we are sending someone to his workout like the 49ers are .. maybe we will hear more input on him after he works out ... I still am very leary of giving up a 2nd round pick .. a 3rd wouldn't be so bad ...

It all depends on his workout. If he does really well it will show a work ethic to keep his workouts up since he had to do it on his own since he wasn't even allowed to be in spring camp with Maryland or use their facilities. If he doesnt do well it will show a certian amount of lazy to go with him being lazy in the class room and that isnt a good combo. We will see.

Thoughts?

I'm actually impressed that he dropped to 325 or so. Much better for him and his mobility. Still need to hear about position drills, though.

Truth be told, he was never 350. Just a usual exaggeration by team media guides. He has probably always been about 330 to 335. What I am impressed with is the fact that he has stayed at his playing weight all offseason and without being able to workout with his team. Surprised that his height was fairly accurate.

Showed some awesome agility work. The Short Shuttle would put him in the top 3, and the 3 cone drill would put him #1 out of all combine participants which does include Staley and Thomas. I think his 40 would put him in the top 10. Vertical would have put him in the top 6.

He only did 15 reps on the bench, but he did it with a bum shoulder. He wasnt even going to lift but did it anyways. Joe Thomas did 28 but Gaither has 2 inch longer arms.

I would like to hear more about his position drills as well.

I really think this is a guy that Grimm can really mold into a good to great LT for the 2008 season.

That's enough for a 2nd rounder for me.

Eh, the numbers look solid. Nothing special.

"The Short Shuttle would put him in the top 3, and the 3 cone drill would put him #1 out of all combine participants which does include Staley and Thomas. His 40 would put him in the top 10 somewhere. and his vertical would have put him in the top 6."

If he did that at the combine setting people would be talking about his performance right after they got done slobbering on Calvin Johnson. His numbers aren't "special" but they are certainly much better then just solid.

I questioned the same thing. Those numbers are GOOOD.

Then again my issue with him isn't his athleticism, it's what's between the ears.

He definitely would have been the 3rd lineman selected in this draft.

If he did that at the combine...
He didnt. Thats my point.

If he had done that at the combine, sure, those numbers would be real nice. But proday/private workout numbers are worthless. Even with those numbers, he would be in top 5 range only. His combine numbers would have looked even worse.

that is what i was thinking

For a player that would have been picked in anywhere from the top 12, to a early 2nd last year is only worth a 3rd rounder in 2008?

Abso-freaking-lutely. Supplemental players ALWAYS go about two rounds lower than they would have in the actual draft. Giving up a third round pick is considered lotto status in most supp. drafts.

Top 5 Only. You say that as if its a bad thing. And he is #1 in agility drills(far more important then 40 time) out of all 2007 prospects, not just top 5.

And yes he wasnt at the combine so lets not forget to mention that he didnt have the luxury of working out with speed coaches at one of the facilities in Phoenix or Miami a full 2-3 months before his proday like every other prospect did. His numbers would have been even better. If his numbers were "only" top 5 now why would they have been seen any worse at the combine?

How do we know that he didn't work out with speed coaches?

Yep I can see that. That is why I am so curious to see how his positional drills and interviews went.

But I doubt we will ever hear a peep out of the scouts on that topic or truthfull info for that matter. Teams trying to make other teams use a high pick by saying lots of good things about them or teams saying it stunk so they can use a lower pick on the player themselves. Even more of a poker face then the normal draft it seems.
