Bidwill is actually full of crap. Glendale lost $2 million "hosting" the last SB. I'm a huge cards fan, and I love football, but the nfl is a bunch of bullying cheapskates. TV money alone would EASILY BUILD 4 new stadiums a year. Why cities across the U.S. bought their tax payer subsidized construction of stadiums BS is beyond me.

Tax revenue generated from cities should only go to providing services and improving quality of life for its citizens. Neither the coyotes nor the cardinals has improved the quality of life for the citizens of Glendale. Quite honestly, it has actually stolen from that quality. Mike Bidwills comments, albeit part of the game that's played, are ridiculous when you bring the entire picture into view.

Cardinals ponied up a whole $90 million for that stadium; Maricopa county residents picked up the rest. His organization was worth under $400 million before the stadium was built; after it was built the value shot up to nearly a billion dollars. And if his memory serves him correctly, may he also remember Glendale saved his a$$, because his campaign was going down in smoke after all other options fizzled out.

Glendale can't add even one more fire truck nor keep the library open another hour, but Michael is going to play hardball... I don't need football if it is going to come down to this... Just my opinion...

Not even sorry to say it, but if your City hosts the biggest game in the Nation and loses money it is a dumb city. They should have boomed for years to come afterwards, and built up for the next one. This aint rocket science.

I think you would have to understand how the negotiations go Dawg. For instance, NFL comes in and demands certain measures taken for security (their "standard"), and now this bill reaches nearly $3 million. NFL doesn't pay for that, the agencies (thereby tax payers) are the ones footing that bill.

Glendale does have a part in this, no doubt. Westgate sucks. People aren't coming all the way out here to eat at the yard house, Johnny rockets, or the carls jr in the days leading to the SB. Glendale doesn't have the entertainment/tourism/hotel infrastructure to make it appealing enough. The Super Bowl doesn't pay the city a dime in tax revenue. Glendale will just lose more than it brings in, bottom line.

I don't know all the ends and outs, but your throwing a lot of big words at me so I'm going to consider them as disrespect... :D

Just kidding. I think Glendale got charged for a lot, and didn't make enough, which boggles my brain because it's easy for every other city. If you can show me some data on any other city losing Robert Deneiro on a Superbowl I might be more open to the views you've expressed. But if the data states other wise I have to stay with my thought respectfully.

Wow a lot of hate for the city of Glendale. Remember they were the only city to step up and say they would build the stadium. One of the tribes volunteered to build it but it would have been in the middle of no where. Oh and is Bidwills comments sour grapes because, as a multi millionaire, the city wouldn't do his bidding??

Total BS. Nice revisionist history.

Mesa was the city that stepped up first when no other city would. Tried to do it on their own a couple of times and once with Tempe. Got shot down by NIMBY campaigns and then by a Tempe City Councilman named Leonard Coppel, IIRC. Then Tempe had their own attempt shot down because of the ridiculous flight path argument. The Salt River Indian tribe and some other tribes also wanted to build it on their land, but the NFL would not allow that. Phoenix had also tossed their name in the ring with at least a couple of undeveloped land areas, but they never worked out.

But, if in your world, Glendale was the only city to step up...uh, okay.

It was built there because there was nothing there to displace and no neighbors to complain about it.

The Bidwill's wanted an East Valley stadium. That is why they tried so long and hard to build it in the East Valley before settling for Glendale.

The mayor said the city of Glendale could be hit with a $3.5 million loss by hosting next year's Super Bowl.

To make things worse, most 2015 Super Bowl events will be in other Valley cities, taking away even more revenue from Glendale.

------------------------

Crying about losing money, Glendale? Create some more reasons for people to stay and spend money in your city. I doubt it bothers them too much or they wouldn't have fought to host it again.

Also - How do you measure the free advertising you get on a national/global scale every time your city is mentioned leading up to the game and during the broadcast? Put a dollar amount on that.

Obvioulsy I don't live there but I don't have any problems staying in Glendale when I go to a Cards game. The Renaissance Hotel is about as convenient as you can get. A casino out there would be nice but the whole Westgate area serves well for, at least for me, out of towners coming into a game.

I love the sports on the West Side. This is where all the real sports fans live. Nothing but clowns and rich snobs on the east side.
Scottsdale, Tempe, and Mesa all turned down the arenas in multiple locations. Glendale came to play. They are only turned off right now because the city is in the dumper financially because of the Coyotes boondoggle.
It is and will continue to be the sports mecca of Arizona. I'll try to get to the Final Four there after the SuperBowl. This after the Pro Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. Then I can hit some NFL playoffs and NHL playoff games.
I personally love any politician who doesn't feel like giving away my wallet every time a multimillionaire demands a free ride. They were taken in on the whole "it'll bring in more tax dollars" routine already.
Lol. Ok dude. Just because you choose to live in the armpit doesn't make us east siders rich or snobs. I just like to pump gas without being begged for money. Grew up out west, never going back.

Tourism taxes paid it not Maricopa residents iirc

The funny part is SF had a high lite of a plane's shadow going over the field last night.

It's in the flight path for San Jose airport kind of. It's so close to the airport the planes all take off and then make a hard right.

By your own words no other city stepped up. The Tempe project under the flight path had no parking. Phoenix never came up with a real plan. And as you said the NFL wouldn't allow it on Indian land. Sure the Bidwills wanted it on the east side but they couldn't, wouldn't or didn't have the money to put it there. Riverside was the best option but the NIMBYs shot that down.

Besides its 15 minutes from my house.

Mesa stepped up first. We had 3 votes. We were the first and only city to try and get something done for quite some time. A couple were really close, but the NIMBY crap and overall fan negativity toward rich sports owners killed them in the end...people voted no without even reading the proposal or how the stadium was to be funded...so many uneducated voters...and then the TSA killed the last one - announcing that they supported the Glendale proposal right before the final Mesa vote.

As I said - plenty of other cities stepped up also but their plans and proposals were shot down.

Glendale was late to the game but had plenty of uninhabited land to offer. :D

Besides its 15 minutes from my house.

I live 33 miles away and can get there quickly since it is all freeway. The drive is not that big a deal for us. We don't tailgate. We go to church and then drive to the Sunday games. The only time it sucks is when it is an evening game on a weekday. Rush hour plus game traffic can get ugly. Even then - we know the Valley well enough to ditch the freeway standstill and take the streets across town.

Works great for me too. I stay at the Hampton instead of the Renaissance as I am more pedestrian in my tastes/budget....:)

Hate the stadium location. Should have been built off Elliot and 10. THAT would have been sick. Freaking blue hairs in Glendale can't get out of their own way. Log on to the Internet please. (Yes a bit of generalization in that last statement)

No one out of state will give a ish because thats reason you are in Az. For people who live there now (and have families there) its a humongous pain in the butt to get out there and ruins things like the Superbowl because its out in BFE. But Dallas pulls it off.

Its a beautfiul stadium and the alternative may have been the LA Cardinals so I wont complain too loud. Just could have been so much more.

I'm a big Yotes fan and I can't disagree with you at all. The big picture goes beyond my fandom and it's too bad that these leagues can pretty much have their way with our local politicians.

Glendale isn't blameless by any stretch, but it's pretty easy to see who's on the winning side of these "negotiations".

The Tempe project under the flight path had no parking. Phoenix never came up with a real plan.

The original Tempe sight had plenty of parking.
You must be registered for see images

It was the #1 preference for the Cardinals and Tempe was more than happy to give that land to the Cards for a song. The Cards would not accept a site that didn't have plenty of parking they made money from. The Problem was all caused by The City of Phoenix, the FAA and Peggy Bilstine yelling out "people will die!". Never mind the fact that Phoenix has no problem with airplanes flying over their sporting venues.

Phoenix was offering the dontown are south of 3rd St & Roosevelt. There was quite a few vacant lots down there at the time. The problem was that site wouldn't have any on-sight parking, eliminating that income to the Cards. Their plan (Phoenix) was for fans to park (and tailgate) in downtown parking stuctures with no money going to the Cards. The city actually started drawing up plans for more stuctures downtown. The Cards shot that one down.

The thing I remember most about all the posts from the stadium issue was that clown NEM continually saying the stadium would never be built and the Cards had a deal to go to San Antonio, or something to that effect.

How long has the stadium been on the west side?

Isn't it time to just get over the time it takes to get over there ( like most every other town)? Geez. Some or even most places have worse situations and stadiums and have to play outside in bad weather.

It's been, what, 8 years? Time to build a new one!
