I guess you guys linked the CBS story not the Thamel one so here's his story which is much more detailed.

https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-co...hes-top-programs-lottery-picks-224417174.html

In the CBS story, augustine has been cooperating with the FBI and apparently admitted he pocketed the money intended to go to Nassir Little. remember, Little was "silently verballed to Arizona" per lots of rumors, when this story broke. So while it's not clear yet, it's entirely possible Augustine pocketed money from Nike, not Adidas, since it was a Nike school that "won" Nassir Little originally.

Would be ironic if all of the coaches pocketed the money too. They'd be then presumably hearing from the IRS.

I actually hope he wasn't the only one keeping the money for himself. I'd feel a little guilty pleasure if it turns out the shoe companies that helped corrupt youth basketball with the AAU, were actually being swindled by the coaches themselves.

I think we all agree that this thing needs to go away because if the reports are true, and you have 30-50 major programs engaging in these practices, what does that say about the NCAA's ability to monitor its schools? That's like giving a final exam at school and 25 of the 30 students taking the test are caught cheating. Signals that something is fundamentally wrong with the teacher or the class curriculum.

To a certain degree it won't matter, major rule changes are coming to where the majority of the kids with definite NBA futures are going to become paid professionals after high school.

The NCAA can simply explain the upcoming 2 or 3 and done rule as a way of "fixing" the system.

Pretty self-explanatory. Arizona fired Book because he took bribe money from an Adidas agent and put Arizona in a difficult position from a PR standpoint. You can’t bring any of those coaches back. Bad optics. this doesnt need anymore explanation.

I’m not sure what the FBI has anymore. Their case relies upon a corrupt official, botched wiretaps, and incomplete paperwork. We’ve waited five months for any sort of hint that this is progressing and the only news available is that which indicates flaws in the investigation. And from an Arizona standpoint, if nothing else materializes from this investigation, all you have is an assistant who pocketed money with no NCAA violations (Quinerly wasn’t paid).

It’s no coincidence that those implicated, schools and players, are starting to recruit and commit elsewhere. Quinerly is going to Nova, Cherry to ASU. Arizona, which has been dormant for 2018, is finally going back on the recruiting trail. Two months ago, you couldn’t sell Arizona to a 2* recruit. Now, Miller has more confidence.

The investigation was ridiculous from the beginning and looks even more silly now.

This sounds like a Trump fan dismissing the FBI’s investigation... it’s ridiculous from the beginning... if they had something by now they’d have something by now... small procedural mistakes mean the entire investigation is biased... it’ll be over soon!

You couldn't be further from the truth.

The Trump investigation has been a fluid process with frequent updates, people being indicted, and no promises of any outcome one way or another. There have been no one accused of misappropriating funds or botching wiretaps.

Meanwhile, the NCAA Hoops investigation has been sloppy to this point, to say the least. We were told that within weeks of the complaint, there would be many more indicted. We're on 5 months now with nothing. Sounds fishy that sources would finally start spilling information as soon as the lead official was terminated, another official was identified to misappropriate funds, and a wiretap was botched.

I'm quoting Josh Gershon from 247 to explain another large discrepancy in the investigation:

"One agency allegedly delivered 50 colleges. By that math, 15 would deliver 750 colleges. Let’s say some staffs use multiple agencies, so I’ll even remove 250 colleges. That leaves 500. There’s only 351 in D1. Makes you wonder why more D2s and D3s aren’t good.

I’ll believe Miller/Dawkins’ taps/records gave them 50 colleges when I see it. The problem with leaking stuff like that to the media with the goal of scarring these guys into pleading is that they know how badly this is exaggerated, unless we’re all completely blind and agents are blowing money on low to mid major talent to go to low to mid major schools (they’re not) and by this math even paying for D2 and D3 players (they’re not)."

I'm plugged into both the Trump and NCAA investigation. There's little, if anything, to indicate the Trump/collusion investigation is being derailed. There's plenty to indicate that the FBI needs to put out a lot of fires before it can make good on some of its promises of taking down shoe companies, AAU teams, and NCAA programs.

I haven't seen Josh post that on BRO so I can't comment but it makes no sense if that's how he posted it. What "agency" is he talking about, the 50 or so schools they didn't say that was just one agent(Andy Miller) or that it was all Dawkins either. They said that this case could ultimately ensnare as many as 50 schools. Thamel made it perfectly clear, there are all sorts of witnesses and people being interviewed now that were NOT named in the original story, that's because they've been getting cooperation and more names from people they started with presumably. In no way does that imply 50 from one agency it just means if the FBI names every school that has athletes implicated in this(and likely coaches) it could be as many as 50.

That's not surprising at all. If you look at any given year there's probably 40-50 teams ranked in the top 25 at a given point in the season. The vast majority of those teams have kids on their roster who are good enough to have been paid. The pac 12 probably has 4 schools right now where you could easily guess players have been paid and be right, USC, ARizona, UCLA and Oregon. The SEC has as many or more, Big 12, ACC etc. It's not that hard at all to get 30-50.

The stuff about there's going to be more that came from the media not the FBI, they didn't say in a few weeks we're going to name more people that was just assumed based on how the FBI works. And it appears that's precisely what they've been doing, it just takes awhile to through all that information and all those witnesses.

Yes because the FBi is so worried about rumors from 97cats and other ARizona insiders that the whole thing is about to fall apart.

If you haven't noticed Pete Thamel of Yahoo wrote the story linked above and it's about 5th story he's written about this in the last week. The reason the story "leaked" today is that he's been doing a series on the case and todays part of that series is from his conversations with people "involved in the case" and that's what he's talking about in todays story.

FWIW I suspect there's some exaggeration when they said UT Chattanooga might be a 2 seed if the facts come out before selection sunday but I think the point they were trying to make is that the vast majority of the teams(likely including UCLA) are going to get caught up in this it won't just be the schools with the 4 assistant coaches already in trouble.

FWIW, I ran into a friend today in the Bay Area I hadn't seen in months, he's a huge Duke fan and he's saying rumors are rampant on Duke's campus that they're in big trouble, multiple kids including Bagley will be named in the EYBL portion of the story(remember the FBI raided the EYBL shortly after the original story broke). My take all along has been if they don't hit Duke and UK on this I will be infuriated and lose most of my interest in college hoops since I know both programs are as dirty as anybody.

Again, it's not blowing over, the FBI has tons of evidence, the case has clearly expanded, possibly exponentially, and that's why it's taking so long. If you're one of the Arizona fans who doesn't care if this season ends up vacated later, then it's good news that it's going this long by the time the story comes out most of the kids involved will be long gone from Arizona.

And a 2nd FWIW, one of the NBA guys who is on Bay Area radio said today he hears essentially every college freshman in the lottery this year, which includes Ayton, will likely ultimately be mentioned as having been involved, essentially the top 15 or so players in the country every one of them were involved in the same type of payment schemes the FBI talked about in September.

UCLA fans on BRO who hate Steve Alford are practically giddy over the story all hoping UCLA is involved so they can't fire Alford for cause.

This is all I care about. Those two blue bloods are guilty just like everyone else and neither suffered recruiting losses from a probe, I hope UK has to forfeit their NC because you know UK has been guilty as soon as Cal stepped foot on campus. I'd suspect K's been dirty since he flipped his philosophy that one and dones were bad for college basketball and got in on the action.

It's at a point now where people are all being thrown under the bus. The schools are throwing the assistant coaches under the Bus(Book and Bland ) and the lawyers are throwing the schools and the head coaches under the bus. Bland's lawyer said that the FBI arrested the wrong people, they're scapegoating these 4 assistant coaches when it's the way the game has been played for years, they all know it they're blaming 4 guys for what has been going on for ages now.

When it's all said and done I am guessing the 2 keys to the case are Merl Code, and Andy Miller. Code was arrested and charged with funneling Adidas money but his biggest issue is likely that he ran the NIKE EYBL for years before Adidas hired him away. There's a reason the FBI raided the EYBL and seized records, and my guess is it's because Code either talked or had been caught enough talking on tape that they knew he'd been funneling kids to Nike schools while working for the EYBL for years.

Miller is the agent who was funding Dawkins and apparently was involved in linking them with Code and Gatto of Adidas, he has a very long history of breaking rules, and in December he gave up his NBA agents license, which is essentially an admission they caught him again and presumably the NBA was going to ban him so he gave up voluntarily.

I strongly suspect if Duke and UK are going to get hit, it'll be because of those 2 guys.

so you didn't tell Arizona fans that the FBI tipped off Sean Miller about all this? How's that lie working out for you?

I've been on this site for ages, people already know me good or bad. I'm a cardinals fan, that's how this board started, from a Cardinals site.

And if you want to talk about bans, you banned me for saying you were wrong about Tyler Dorsey and how aRizona recruited him, and I said it was probably eventually going to become a problem. You tried to get me to post an apology, that you wrote, I refused and you banned me. not even 2 months later the kid decommitted from Arizona because they were recruiting over him at PG and he didn't like it, exactly what I said was going to happen. So you were wrong there too.

the site you're referring to disabled my password months ago, I can't post there although I'm not officially banned. There was multiple threads on that site about me posting here and on Bruinzone, the only reason you apparently weren't aware of those is you vanished after your ridiculous claim about the FBI tipping off Miller was met with disdain by even your own Arizona fans.

USC site banned me for saying Mayo was going to get USC in trouble, I am pretty confident I got that right.

like always you make no sense, draw from things that happened years ago like youre the authority, and have no working knowledge of any facts at Arizona, just how you perceive them

you just talk and talk and talk and bend those opinions to support the story you tell yourself that you so desperately try and shove down everyone's throats, even when embarrassingly so far off the facts or any consideration or notion of what the facts are, just your clouded and biased opinions.

and i know youve been here a while, part of the main reason people elsewhere wont come here...and im truly sorry you are a Cardinal fan.

i wanted something so bad in life to not share anything in common with you whatsoever...maybe i will give the Cardinals back???

Looks like a bat-signal went out

a couple of people from here posted about me on the beardown site. One of them is TJ can't tell who the others are they don't seem to be using the same handle there they use here.

I don't particularly care they have a perfect right to go to another site and say what they want, they have a right to say it here too but apparently chose not to.

Go back and look at the posts from last week saying the FBI story was about to fall apart, look at what I said, and tell me a week later who appears to be right, them or me?

I don’t know you, but Russ has been a poster here for YEARS. His takes are virtually ALWAYS reasonable unless it’s about Lonzo Ball. YOU are the stranger here. And it seems the only reason you came here was to disparage a respected poster. Sorry if I don’t give you an ounce of credibility.

Oh please the people who posted on that site post here all the time. TJ is mad because last week he insisted the FBI story was about to fall apart, the exact opposite has happened.

Embarassingly wrong, like claiming the FBI tipped off Sean Miller? Like claiming the amount Trier tested positive for this year was less than last year when the NCAA cleared him. You might want to re read that story where Trier himself said "The NCAA agreed that I had no knowledge of receiving the substance and my eligibility was restored. Although I can practice and travel with the team, I am not allowed to resume playing in games until the substance completely leaves my body even at a trace amount.

So you are claiming he was cleared last year and was suspended yesterday for an amount that was less than he tested positive for when he was cleared. And the player himself clear as day, said he had to test COMPLETELY clean. So you're claiming his recent test was for less than zero?

thanks but it's ok, I have a history with the guy and I'm sure the entire reason people called him to come over was hoping he'd start a feud with me so I'd get myself banned from this part of the board.

who the fudge is TJ and why do i care?

the athletic dept was notified of the FBI's interaction weeks before the story broke - Coach Miller backed off Arizona's business as it woulda been usual per the direction given to him. you would never know something like that cause you have no connections, i do.

and Trier did not re-injest, the test results are from the same ingestion, and are LOWER than the initial positive from before, to which he was already cleared, which is why Arizona is very confident he gets re-cleared before next weekend, also something you would know nothing about cause you have no connections.

as with lots of behind the scenes info, there is no bibliography or reference or meter for you to fill.

now go scour the internet for what yuou call facts and return to tell everyone what it is once again, cause you said it, and its your story, the only story, the Russ Smith correctness correct story.

Yeah Russ has never been a troll regarding UA basketball in my opinion. He just has a style of his own that may get to some fans during these sensitive times.

97’ has been “dialed in” regarding Arizona b-ball for as long as I can remember. He’s very respected on other forums. When you’re providing information for that long you’re record won’t be perfect. That’s true with everyone including “insiders” on sites that you pay for.

I think both guys should stick around. :)

FYI I predict trier will be reinstated pretty soon, likely before the next game. The combination of people like Bilas campaigning for him, plus the story out today about all the other stuff, I figure the NCAA will decide Trier is small potatoes and reinstate him.

Lol I’m not mad and that’s not even what I insinuated. I said the FBI investigation has its flaws and it still does. I like you, Russ, but you know as well as I that when it comes to all things anti-Arizona, your 8-Clap instincts come out and you go all out against Arizona.

Not sure they want further embarrassment of reversing their decision right after suspending him again. If it does happen it needs to be before Selection Sunday so the seeding isn’t affected for Arizona or their potential opponents.

Mark Emmert needs to resign or they aren't going to save face anywhere. I am not sure things can get any worse for them - but you have a point.

Yeah... this can’t really be argued. If it’s pro-Warriors/UCLA, anti-Zona, Russ definitely leads the charge and prob isn’t the most objective poster on the subject.

this is the post I'm referring to if I misinterpreted your meaning there I apologize but I went off what you posted.

"This FBI investigation is dying a slow death. The vibe around UofA is more optimistic than it was before. Not sure how coincidental it is that Miller has upped his recruiting efforts of late for 18 and 19.

I cannot believe how irresponsible the FBI was in this matter."

I get what you're saying but realize, I'm actually FAR more interested in Duke and UK getting nailed than UA because it's been so obvious for years they were cheating and ESPN etc bends over backwards to ignore it.

i was actually cheering FOR ARizona last night, because they're the only quality win UCLA has on their resume right now, I want them to keep winning.

But I'm a pretty clear person I don't hide what I think and I've been pretty open. I think UA changed their recruiting in recent years and got involved with a bunch of kids who were expecting to get paid and Book got caught up in it but I don't for a minute believe that a control freak like Miller didn't know what Book was doing. So I think UA is going to get in some trouble largely for playing kids they had reason to believe were actually not eligible.

I don't believe Trier's story for a second. I made that clear last year and again yesterday. I think he got caught and whether he likes it or not he got suspended. But I do think he'll get reinstated pretty soon. Several times recently(Braxton Beverly for example) the NCAA reversed a decision after ESPN and other media got ahold of it and started ripping them on it, I think they'll do that again with Trier.

I think they realize right now they look absolutely terrible in this because we're a month away from the tournament and the whole season has a black cloud over it, nobody knows what's going on. So I think they probably aren't all that interested in fighting the rising tide on the Trier story they'll just say they reviewed their own medical evidence and decided to uphold the appeal and reinstate him. I personally don't believe him, I think he should have been out all year last year per the NCAA's rules and if he was, he'd have gone pro already.

I put 97cats on ignore and won't respond to him.
