Kevin Minter - LB - Bengals
Bengals signed LB Kevin Minter, formerly of the Cardinals.

Minter gives the Bengals an every-down starter next to Vontaze Burfict and Rey Maualuga. He played on the inside in Arizona but will likely move to strong side in DC Paul Guenther's 4-3 scheme. 26-year-old Minter was one of the top linebackers remaining in free agency. His addition is an upgrade in pass coverage.

First of all...that is quite a statement on his pass coverage ability. Wouldn't he be limited to MLB in Cincy's scheme and does that mean the end of Mauluga in Cincy?

Secondly...I would think this helps us land Ruben Foster. Not guaranteed he is there at #13 but Cincy was a team that was supposed to take him.

Well as much as he was maligned on this board I doubt he will be missed.

Good for our comp pick totals. We have now lost 9 free agents and signed 3. Cards signed Dawson, Dansby & Jarvis Jones. Bethea doesn't count as he was cut.
Lost: Campbell, Jefferson, Cooper, Swearinger, Minton, Okafor, Catanzaro, Fell and Watford

Good landing spot for him. He might take a step forward in their system.

Thats a good fit for him.

Ive never disliked him personally. I just think hes an outdated model. Modern day LBs need to be hyper athletic.

Good for Minter and good luck big guy. He was a stand up soldier for us but he wasn't fast enough to play in our D.

Kind of funny that los leaves Cinci for us and Minter leaves us for Cinci.

Good for him. He was a solid ILB for a traditional defense and the Cardinals where not one but is there any traditional defense anymore is the question and I wish him all the success

I don't think it will change anything in regards to comp picks at the end of the day. We can get a total of 4 max.
The contracts our UFA's have gotten have far more value then what we've given. We are likely to get all 4 possible comp picks. A 3rd for Campbell, a 3 or 4 for Jefferson, 5th for Cooper, 6th for Swearinger.

Watford contract was too small at 1.5m to even qualify for a 7th anyways. Dansby, Dawson, and Jones all are easily cancelled out regardless by Okafor, Minter, Catanzaro, and Fells.

In fact, losing so many players hurts the comp pick potential because we are maxed at 4 regardless. Every player we lose at this point we have zero return on. Eventually you have diminishing returns, and Minter's will fall under that category. We get nothing more from losing him.

Here is the updated Comp picks for 2018. They have us getting a 6th for Minter ($4,500,000.00). I don't see his personal page updated yet but give it a day or two and it should reflect the correct salary.

As of today and IF those numbers are correct then we should get the following:
2018 Comp Picks:

3rd -#64 - Campbell

4th -#136 - Jefferson

6th -#213 & 214 - Minter & Swearinger

Cooper got a slightly larger contract than Swearing. Not sure how this relates to comp picks.

Marcus Cooper signed a 3 year, $16,000,000 contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $1,500,000 signing bonus, $8,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,333,333.

D.J. Swearinger signed a 3 year, $13,500,000 contract with the Washington Redskins, including a $4,000,000 signing bonus, $9,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $4,500,000.

I have absolutely zero faith that we'll get those comp picks as outlined so clearly by CardCzar. The League always finds a way to stiff us.

I thought comp picks were awarded at the end of each round? The 3rd would then be in the range of pick 97 to early 100's...no?

Day 10 of FA

Defections:

LB Kevin Minter---it will be interesting to see whether the Bengals of the Cardinals got the better of this LB swap of Minter and Dansby. At first glance, Minter becomes the Bengals' starter at SLB, where is he is likely to be productive in terms of tackles, but a possible liability in coverage. On the flip side, as the Cardinals LILB, Dansby will have to prove that he can be a downhill tackler from the inside, that he can blow up screens and that he can blitz with authority. He should be an upgrade in pass coverage, even though some Bengals' fans are maintaining that Dansby played slower than expected last year.

Each round of picks will have a dollar value to it. Now when you have 2 or more players that fall into that category then higher one will be taken first.

Cooper, Swearinger and Minter all fall in the 6th round. Coopers salary is the highest so he is eliminated first.

Could be a bigger statement about Cincy's pass coverage before signing Kevin.

Did you forget to put a "still" in there somewhere? Because Dansby has proven ability at doing those things consistently for his entire career.

While you are correct. The guy is going to turn 36 this year and has a whole lot of wear on the tires. He could only manage to start 7 games last year due to health... Didn't log a single INT and a whopping single sack on the season... I hope he can come back and produce at really high level but just like anyone at some point the body fails them and it tends to creep up in a hurry more often then not.
