I don't want Stanton - the reason he's on the bench is because he's a career backup. Agree we need to see more of Roberts, Golden and Brown and less of our putrid TE's. Who is Ryan Williams?

they also didn't seem to think replacing Levi was a question after a couple weeks. bottom line...Palmer keeps playing like this and putting us in holes, it's gonna be tough to keep him in there, especially considering how poorly he played in his last stints as a starter with the Bengals and Raiders.

True, but Arians and Keim personally acquired Palmer while Keim got his job in part because it has been leaked that he wanted Peterson over Brown.

IMO, Arians has seen enough of Stanton to know what he has in him and Stanton is on the bench because Arians doesn't believe it is better than what PAlmer has to offer right now. If Palmer is not getting better over the next 4 or 5 weeks, then maybe you give Stanton his shot, but not before then.

I just rewatched the SF game (condensed version).

I noticed one thing about Palmer - his throws seem to arrive a half-second late. (This is why our receivers seem to be so tightly covered. DB's and LB's have time to catch up to the ball).

I don't think it's because Palmer's releasing the ball late but because those throws lack velocity. Sometimes you need to float a ball, most times you have to drill it. I'm not sure whether the problem is due to lack of arm strength or whether it's because Carson prefers be a dart-thrower or "steer" the ball to spots where he thinks his receivers will be; but I think Palmer could add 5 - 10% to his completion percentage if he zinged in those passes with more authority.

I actually think he often throws the ball too early and rushed---a second later can mean the difference between tight window and clearer separation. Warner was brilliant at this---but Warner stepped up into the pocket to create that extra second whereas Palmer stays statuesque.

Benefit of the Doubt?

One of the reasons I love posting on this board is the variety of responses to the threads (the respectful ones that is).

I must admit---after digesting BA's take on the struggles of the offense and Andre Ellington's feeling that something started to click in the second half---

AND---paying careful heed to Rugby's astute reminder that after the two picks CP's QB rating was 110.0---

I am willing to give BA and CP the benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes I get so angry at early incompetence that the bad taste lingers, even longer perhaps than it should.

You know---I look at the intensity that QBs like Brady, Brees, Luck and Peyton have and I just do not see an iota of that in Palmer and it bothers me.

But---on the flip side---QBs like Rodgers and Flacco (two recent SB winners)---are a little more laid back. yet, even they seem to be enjoying the craft more than Palmer.

I think Palmer needs to play angry. The one time he did, I was impressed and it help to secure a come from behind win after the customary early struggles.

I coached a QB like that once. It was uncanny---every time I got him angry, he played like his pants were on fire. Some players are like that.

Thanks everyone for a great discussion---I feel more hopeful heading into Thursday night.

And a special shout out to Rugby who has managed to keep his wits about him.

In the same spirit, I'd like to give a shout out to Russ, whose views I find very compelling on this thread.

I think one way or another Thursday night will give us greater clarity.

So what? Turned out he was the smartest man in the room while Whiz and Graves were too concerned about need to reach for someone with poor technique and questionable work ethic. Glad this was corroborated by Mike Silver and not just self-promotion by Keim.

This is super interesting to me. I was unable to tune in until half way thru the 2nd quarter. I had a totally different view of this game than the majority of the board. I felt like we played our asses off, and save some maddeningly off target throws, Carson played well. the OL played well, and D was outstanding until that final mammoth drive, in which the 9ers deserve a ton of credit for straight ramming it down our throats. Fitz' fumble hurt the most. Took the game right out of our hands. And the 9ers took advantage of it in spades.

AND, I turned the game off in frustration before the Smith fumble. I kept think "That freaking 2 pt conversion is going to cost us the chance to tie this game"

Miss a couple of plays here and there, and everything is very different as far as perception is concerned...

Notice you didn't restate that Fitz "needs to be kept in his place"... Good job Mitch. ;)

What the hell are you talking about? The statement was made in reference to Keim and Arians willingness to stick with Palmer (a guy they handpicked) vs. their quick trigger in getting rid of Brown (a guy who Keim didn't want). The conversation had nothing to do with Keim's ability as a GM.

Yes. Mike Silver was likely in the Cards war room at the time of the draft and isn't relying on what he was told by an interested party. An interested party like Steve Keim.
