Keep in mind, Mitch, that Matt Leinart, the QB you openly protest, had similar passing percentages and played in 2 national titles. What gives?

Exactly. The Cards already have a guy 6'5" and 235 at QB with 4 years NFL experience, 3 with the current coaches, tremendous college success, and a big name.

What owner in his right mind would spend millions for another, even more unproven, one without seeing if the current one works out?

They're also both left handed.

Here is a bit of sage advice: Stay away from University of Florida QBs: they always bust...

I can't claim ownership of this piece, but it helps highlight the Florida Busts:

So after hearing Jesse Palmer on College Football Live this morning tell me his five invites to New York for the Heisman ceremony, and hearing that one of them is Tim Tebow with his no-better-than-mediocre numbers, his insanely low passing yards and the fact that his "all-purpose TD's" still don't add up to the number of rushing or passing TD's that some other QB's and RB's have, I decided to do some research.

As overrated and as overhyped as Tebow is, it really is not his fault. He is simply going out and playing football, he just happens to play for the University of Florida. If he played anywhere else, nobody would even notice his existence. First of all, as far as the Heisman invites go, these should be the 5 invited players (and these are their current statistics) in no particular order:

Case Keenum (Houston): 3,815 Passing Yards, 28 TDs, 71.0% Completion Percentage.
C.J. Spiller (Clemson): 739 Rushing Yards, 334 Receiving Yards, 11 TDs (5 Rushing, 3 Receiving, 3 Return), 199.8 All-Purpose Yards Per Game (10.1 Per Play),
Colt McCoy (Texas): 2,447 Passing Yards, 17 TDs, 72.9% Completion Percentage.
Mark Ingram (Alabama): 1,148 Rushing Yards, 11 TDs (8 Rushing, 3 Receiving), 6.6 Yards Per Carry
Jordan Shipley (Texas): 1,050 Receiving Yards, 6 Receiving TDs,

Compare these to Tim Tebow's statistics:
1,531 Yards, 20 TDs (9 rushing, 11 passing), 65.9% Completion Percentage.

Case Keenum has ridiculously high stats, far better than any other QB, and if he played in the SEC or the Big 12, he would automatically be hand-fed the Heisman. However, he does not, and there is still Heisman discussion. McCoy, in a different light, has better numbers than Tebow (see above), his team is in the Big 12, his team is undefeated, so basically he is in Tebow's exact position as far as the Heisman goes, except he has CLEARLY done better. So yeah, not quite getting why Tebow is in every conversation.

Anyway, on to the more interesting findings that I had when researching the history of UF Quarterbacks. Assuming Tebow is a huge bust in the NFL (which he will be), he will be up there with a bunch of other bust-out QB's from his college. All of these QB's were superstars at UF, leading them to winning seasons, SEC Championships, and in some cases, National Championships. Here are the ones that I found, working backwards:

--------------------------------

1.) Chris Leak. Declared for the 2007 draft, and went un-drafted. The Chicago Bears signed him after the draft, and he never took a snap during the regular season in the NFL. He was cut later in 2007 for Kyle Orton, and was never seen or heard from in the NFL again.

2.) Rex Grossman. Not as big of a bust, was an on-and-off Chicago Bears starter from 2004-2008. Heralded by Chicagoans at the beginning of his career as the "franchise QB," he was immediately shown to be incredibly fragile. He made the Super Bowl in 2006 (his one good season) and folded under the pressure. He has a career 6-8 record as a starter other than 2006. He was benched in 2008 and is currently the backup for the Houston Texans.

3.) Jesse Palmer. I'm only putting this piece of **** on this list because he got me fired up about it this morning. He was useless in Florida, where he was carried by his team to a decent career (alternating with Doug Johnson and Grossman) in college. He was drafted in 2001 by the New York Giants and spent 4 years as a backup. He was cut in 2005 and signed by the San Francisco 49ers, where he was a backup for a few months and then cut again. He played for Montreal in the CFL for a year before he retired.

3.) Danny Wuerffel. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1996, and looked the part of a winner. However, he wasn't drafted until the 4th round by the Saints, and had a bad start. In his first three years, he played in 16 total games and only won a few of them. He floated around the league, playing for Green Bay, Chicago (seems like all these pieces of **** end up with the Bears), and Washington. After 6 failing seasons, he called it quits and was never seen again in the NFL.

4.) Shane Matthews. He was, by a wide margin, the most successful of the overrated, overhyped Florida QB's. Ironically, he was the least-hyped QB in the last 20 years at Florida. He had a 14-year NFL career, starting in 1993 with (guess who??) the Chicago Bears and eventually as a backup in Washington and Buffalo. He retired a few years ago, and is now a celebrity and guest speaker-for-hire.

5.) Kerwin Bell. Drafted in 1988 after breaking many of his predecessor's SEC records (I'll get to his predecessor next). Bell actually did have a 100% completion percentage, as he took a grand total of 5 snaps in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts in 1996. He was actually out of the league from 1989 until 1996. He was cut by the Colts in 1997 and hung up the cleats for good.

6.) Wayne Peace. This is, by far, my favorite former Florida QB to rip on. Wayne Peace set almost every passing record for the SEC in his four year Florida career. In 1982, his Gators (known as the Peace Corps back then) took down the seemingly-unstoppable Miami Hurricanes. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He went undrafted in 1984, and never took a snap in the NFL. He did serve a year as a backup QB for the Cincinatti Bengals, but did not play. He is my favorite QB to rip on because part of my family lives in Lakeland, Florida. If you are in that suburb of Tampa Bay and driving down Florida Avenue, there is a good chance you will pass a big red-and-white sign that reads: "State Farm Insurance, Wayne Peace, Agent." It pretty much sums up the way Florida QB's careers end up going.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are others, such as John Reaves in the 1970's, but I think this is plenty enough to see how overrated and overhyped the University of Florida Quarterbacks are. I can't wait for Tebow to go to the NFL and get crushed every time he tries to run a naked bootleg. He's not even NEARLY as talented as some of the QB's on this list, and that's the saddest part. One day, we will all look back and laugh at how bad he did at the professional level.

Case Keenum will be an interesting topic in the 2011 draft, if there is one.

He's 6'2" 200 but this just jumps out at you: "Threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns on 56-of-75 passing at East Carolina."

Also shows you the current state of college football everywhere but the Big 10.

Respectfully, more like......

The cards already have a guy 6'5' 210 (I doubt 235) physically unimpressive QB, who has shown to be brittle (although past doesn't equal future but it sure points what will probably happen, and every BODY is different-even from KW) with 1 year of actual NFL experience in which he did squat (14 td's and 20 ints in 595 career passes while having Boldin, fitz, and breaston), amongst 3 seasons with the current coaches where he couldn't beat out KW, tremendous college success that has translated into NFL mediocrity...if that (because he was with TONS of NFL players in college, against pac-10 defenses mind you), and had a big name.

What owner in his right mind would spend (the cost of a contract for Tim Tebow at the end of 1st-3rd round whose entire contract has a big chance to be as big OR SMALLER as ML is scheduled to make JUST next year) to draft a guy who is unproven (as opposed to ML who has proven in my eyes to be a bust), one who we've seen enough of to be wary about believing he will work out based on his 595 career passes, plus preseason. We've SEEN ML. Now he has his chance to prove it, but unlike others, I fully understand he's had ample opportunities. If he hasn't done it yet, odds are he won't. No one in their right mind can say ML hasn't gotten a shot....he has...and done squat with it. I hope I'm wrong, but nothing I've seen out of ML convinces me he is even a mediocre qb.

How anyone could look at a picture of Tim Tebow and Matt Leinart and say they are the same size is amazing. But that's exactly what people have been implying, and its simply wrong.

And Jaws (from bond) was as big as Tattoo.

Matt Leinart looks like a little boy compared to Tebow. So even if they were the same height and same weight, the two carry it quite differently. Or else you might as well compare him to Arnie Schwarzenegger, because at his weightlifting weight he too was 235. (granted shorter 6 1-1/2).

Everyone wanted ML because he 'won', not because he could throw every pass, it was because he could win. Since he's been in the league we've seen that he can't throw every pass (although some would disagree), and those people who say he CAN throw those passes, at the very least should concede that his margin of errors on most of the tough throws is ZERO. I don't want a guy who has to whip it as HARD as he can to barely get it there before db int's the out route. Yet with ML you have to think that on EVERY out route he throws.

Tim Tebow 'won' as well, with less talent that ML (running game, ol), who also can't throw every pass accurately, but can actually get the ball out there, and has all the intangibles that ML never has or will have.

People keep saying drafting Tebow would be some huge risk, with some huge contract, and that ML is as big?

C'mon. There is very LITTLE risk, it wouldn't be a huge contract, and he is far superior physically as ML.

Plus unlike ML, you could NEVER question his drive, his work ethic, or his leadership. ML the jury is STILL out. But it doesn't look good.

I fully expect DA to be our starter, having Tebow ready for 2011, should be the goal.

Odds are we won't take him. If we do want him, he'll probably be gone before we would consider selecting him. The sophistric way of equating these two qbs, and through this sophistry we should just keep what we have because on the surface using sophistry they seem similar, is vastly incorrect.

The dl in this draft is said to be the best class in 30 years. There are multiple lb's who should fall to us. If we 'waste' a pick on Tebow, I have NO DOUBT that we can pick up good/great talent in round 2-3 at dl/olb. If not this draft, there will probably never be a time much better than this to pass in one of the top 3 rounds at dl/olb.

Not to mention, if Leinart isn't the guy and we wait until after a CBA is signed, we're idiots. We can get rid of that huge cap figure next year this year, at NO future cap's cost. THIS IS THE YEAR FOR NFL TEAMS TO GET OUT FROM UNDER CRAPPY CONTRACTS like NO OTHER time since the cap started. Granted we don't know how the future cap will play out, but we have to think there will be one, and we need to make a decision on ML before the CBA is signed, and use our mulligan while we still can. So ML might not just cost us Tim Tebow, he might also cost us Darnell Dockett. Just saying. None of this means Tim Tebow won't bust. But nothing has shown us ML isn't one either, if anything everything has shown us he IS. If you have that evaluation, you need to get another QB. I think we do, and Tebow's talent, physicality, and potential draft position and contract make him a very limited risk, with tons of upside.

Just my opinion

where he couldn't beat out KW,

Name one QB other than possibly Peyton Manning who could have "beat out" Kurt Warner the last 2.5 seasons.

Warner's numbers last 40 regular season games: 10,698 yards 77 TDs 38 INTs and 23 games with a passer rating of 90 or higher.

Drafting Tebow would be dumber than dumb any earlier than the 4th round.

Drew Brees. :iwin:

Don't think even he could have taken the starting job from Warner in '08.

Warner's numbers the last half of '07 were 2,362 yards 21 TDs 10Ints and 5 of 8 games with a 90 or higher passer rating.

That would be 4,724 yards and 42 TDs for 16 games!!!

I think our needs prevent us from looking at the QB position in the 1st round. Taking one there would also be telling the players that the team has no confidence in Leinart, thus essentially encouraging them to give up on the season. With that said, I'd love to see us take him in the 2nd round (even if that requires us moving up a little bit).

I don't think many people realize just how good Warner was over that 8 game stretch because it was overshadowed by the SB run the next year.

The Cards were 5-3 and scored 247 points. That's more than they scored in some full seasons in Arizona.

And I got to sit through the craptastic game in Tampa just before that run started. :)

Tebow reminds me of Vick! And I dont want Vick here. But I would be curious to see how many of the people who wanted Vick to come here either want Tebow here or dont??

I dont see Tebow going in the first round. If he were to somehow fall to the third round I am all for drafting him. I am not sold on what all the "scout pro's" are saying about him. He is a gamer and unlike Vick I think there is a chance with some NFL coaching he might eventually be ok.

Tebow doesn't remind me of Vick in the least.

Yes, I am Bill Simmons. Surprised you can't see my inner Boston city sports love. I have been trying to hide it for a while.
