For me, a fan, the top of the Draft comes down to WOW vs. POW. On the WOW side, we take Floyd or Hill, and give our QB's another big play receiver opposite Larry. That's what my heart wants. However, my head says, we have to go POW and rebuild our OL. At #13, one of the following LT's should be available, Reiff, Martin or Adams, and this will enable the team to move Levi to RT. Or they might like Glenn, who's a RT and then we'd have to keep Levi at LT. At any rate the OL would be a lot better than last year and that would also help the running game and the QB's.
As a fan I go WOW, but I think that the team has to go with their head, and POW is the pick. Either way part of me will be happy.

The problem is, none of those guys should be taken as high as 13, with the exception of Rieff...and he'll be long gone. I don't want us to reach at a position of need. A top WR would be nice, as would an OLBer. The good thing about our roster right now is that we should be able to use the BPA to the fullest. We could also consider trading back and picking up some later picks as well.

The drama of this draft is between picks 11 and 15. There are 6 to 8 quality prospects in play at this point.

Too many needs/too few picks.

We have 2 picks in the first three rounds to match up with 4 significant needs (LT, WR, pass rusher, run-stopping ILB). (Even assuming we can get someone good in the 4th round, we'll still wind up one player shy).

And if we go the BPA route and draft someone like DeCastro, we'll even be farther behind the 8-Ball.

Which is why we really have to get off our duffs during the remainder of free agency. Otherwise we may be forced to draft for need.

I would add that we need a young SS to groom to take over for Wilson in the next few years, Jeff.

IMO the FO would not have brought A Roberts into to meet with PM unless they are high on him, so I'm taking WR off the board in the 1st unless we view someone by far the BPA. The way this offseason is setting up IMO we will use 1st rd pick on OLB or reach somewhat at LT. I love Decastro at 13, but I don't think you bring in a G in FA if you think you may use that pick on a G. 3rd I see us either going OL or OLB depending on what we do in the 1st.

There are 2 ways to lay out a mock: (1) how you think a team will draft or (2) how you want a team to draft.

I'm assuming that your basing the above on how you think they feel about Roberts and not necessarily what you think they should do.

PS I believe Osamele projects as an OG.

you take the best player available regardless of the position unless you already have a QB and that is what is there. It is impossible to think one can hold on to people or they will not get hurt in positions one has already covered. If a WR is best player on your board when you draft or it is even a CB, you do it

I have no idea why we wouldnt go BPA at a position of need when that has been our M.O. for the past few years.......

DeCastro
Kuechly
Upshaw
Reiff <-- Not likely to be there.

One of those four should be our pick. Only other option is a trade down.

This is purely based on what I think they will do not what I want.

Yup, not as pressing as a Tackle or some would say WR.

As the OP said, the WR pick would add a lot of Wow to this offense and give it numerous options.

But those options (speed receiver) would be limited because of the time whoever is back there has.

But if we did surprise the SS Barron kid from Alabama is the cream of the crop. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=81868&draftyear=2012&genpos=SS

I do think this team is setting up to trade that 13 pick for a later pick and wants a 2nd round pick. I'm all for that. To me Cincinnati would be the most likely scenario with 21st picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

That way the target can be @21 - Cordy Glenn or Mike Adams - OT, Donta Hightower - ILB, Kendall Wright - WR, Stephen Hill - WR. There are also, numberous OT's available this yr. in the 2-4 rounds - Zebrie Sanders, Osemele, Massey, Schwartz, Potter, Adcock,, Palko, J. Allen, J. Brown...and possibly a few others.

Nice draft. You think Omar will last into the 6th?

I would prefer that Claiborne fall to us, as IMO Peterson will be taking over for AW in a year or so...

The guard we brought in also plays tackle...

Getting a guard of the caliber that DeCastro is supposed to be, makes the entire line better...makes the tackle on his side better, makes the center better

Drafting DeCastro at #13 is in no way a mistake...there will not be a tackle on the board worthy of a top 13 pick

Correct. Free agentcy is for filling needs.

You draft the highest rated player on your board for each pick, period. If you have too much talent in the position that is highest on your board then trade back or draft the next highest rated player.

You do this you fill the roster with the most talent you can each year. Then you should always have good depth, and have guys ready to replace guys when they leave to get over paid.

The only time I would go away from BPA is if I thought that one player would put the team over the top to win a SB.

I generally agree, but there's one nagging question -

"What if we don't fill most of our needs in free agency?

(like now)?

they trade down when they can..so with 10 draft picks they could fill .ahaha.anyway if they trade down with cleveland then they get an extra 2th round pick..with the 3 picks we select a starter offensive lineman and a secon widereceiver..with 3th round they can take someone like ronnel lewis bruce irving or massaquoi repeating the acho succesfull experiment.with the deep class of wrs and olb we have many chances...if we take de castro then i like sanu in the second round

I don't see them even drafting a WR in any round. Whiz and company are very content with what they have at this position. Especially now that Doucet has been signed.

In all likelihood the first pick will be an Oline player. If they are truly happy with the play of Levi then they will draft for a RT or slide Levi to RT and select a LT. This team has drafted for need in round one for like forever.

2011
1- Patrick Peterson, CB

2010
1 - Dan Williams, DT

2009
1 - Chris Wells, RB

2008
1 - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB

2007
1 - Levi Brown, T

2006
1 - Matt Leinart, QB

2005
1 - Antrel Rolle, DB

2004
1 - Larry Fitzgerald, WR

2003
1 - Bryant Johnson, WR
1 - Calvin Pace, DE

2002
1 - Wendell Bryant, DT

2001
1 - Leonard Davis, T

2000
1 - Thomas Jones, RB

Every one of these picks except one (Fitz in 2004) were need picks, not PBA. Now some may have been the PBA and a need at the same time however that doesn't dismiss they were still a need.

Very interesting thread, Garth.

If the Cardinals stick with last year's pattern...they will go with WOW early and then POW later.

WOW: Patrick Peterson, Ryan Williams, Rob Housler.

POW: Sam Acho, Anthony Sherman, David Carter.

It is not too late, since at this moment the Broncos and Jets are having trouble with Tebow's contract. We should swoop in immediately and offer our 3rd round pick for Tebow. And when he gets here let him know that he will be our new Left Tackle. He can easily put on a few pounds eating some buffets and is tough and coordinated enough to learn just about any position. We could even design some tackle eligible pass plays for him.

Now laugh all you want, but I guarantee you that he would be a better LT than anyone we have at present. And no doubt would give it his all as the Lord would direct him to do.
