I just read an article that stated that the Lakers luxury tax for next season would be $65 million if the tax went into effect this coming season instead of the following. Their payroll is likely to be around $90 million. That's $20 million over the LT threshold which hits them with a $3.25 tax per dollar that they are over. They would essentially be paying $155 million for their roster. Wow! If they become a multiple offender (exceeding the threshold 4 out of the last 5 years) it bumps up to $4.25 per dollar.

This maybe the last run for the Lakers. There is no way they can keep their core together. Bynum is in his final year of his contract. They can't resign him while keeping Kobe, Gasol, and Nash. Gasol is the one to go, but they'll need expiring contracts and they'll be desperate.

This is going to reshape the league. Even the Heat will have to take notice.

Good call.

This tells me that a D12 deal is highly unlikely, unless they're willing to give up Gasol and Bynum for cap relief and/or only have Howard for one season.

they just signed an enormous cable deal. ENORMOUS.

From what I read they plan to pocket $900 million from the new 15 year deal. That works out to 60 million per year. I know I'm not taking into account time value of money and the like, but do you think Dr. Buss is going to give all of that money right over to the small market teams.

I bet you they won't pay an extreme tax amount like that. They may pay the tax, but there is no way they pay $65 million plus.

It's only for a few years. Once Bryant retires, the window is closed and they can start thinking about managing costs. Does it really make that much difference whether $65 million goes to the salaries of your own players, or the salaries of the players you're beating?

Wow that is an insane, and very good imo deterrent to be obscenely over, while still allowing someone to if they want to.

Think of it this way. For simplicity case it means going over just a little like 20 million (over luxury tax threshold) causes a team to literally pay a tax equal to their payroll to be distributed to the other teams.

The Lakers themselves would basically be cutting a check of about 3 million to every team not over (if you assume about 20-25 teams not over LT threshold).

They will pay it for three years of the championship window. Dr. Buss is not afraid to spend to win. However, Jim is running things now more than Jerry, but I don't think that is going to change.

After the window closes and Kobe gets ready to hang them up, their salary load is nothing, almost literally. Which is why they'd like to have a D12 to build around for the next run. But dropping $200 million in lux tax over the next three years isn't a scenario the Buss family would shy away from if they believe they will win one or two titles.

I don't remember reading that the Suns also got cash from the Lakers for Nash.
Is "cash considerations" a requirement for any trade with the Suns?
I bet its a running joke with every front office in the league.

In this case the Suns got 3M plus four draft picks whereas they could have gotten nothing for Nash. As long as the Suns are acquiring picks rather than selling them or dumping them to get rid of a player, I'm fine with it.

But of course we really don't know what the Suns will do with those picks. Will Sarver want to draft a player at #30, for example, and give guaranteed salary to someone who otherwise would have been a second-round pick with no guaranteed salary? I guess we'll find out.

It seems unfair to evaluate a move based on a possible stupid follow-up move that might happen years in the future.

In any case, the guaranteed salary for the #30 pick is trivial, not much more than the veteran minimum and for only two years. I doubt that even Sarver would see that as a financial burden.

This makes me cry :( I just remembered all my Suns jerseys are of players no longer on the team :(

Same here. Plus all my bobble heads and Todd McFarlane Suns sitting at my desk at work. The only one left is my Al McCoy bobblehead. ;) Well, and technically my Dan Majerle bobblehead.
