I am still on the Camwagon; what I saw last night was a QB that was not as sharp as usual and I fully believe that is from the near 1 month lay-off. The throws he missed were barely missed. He had two throws last night that should've been touchdowns the one wide open down the middle of the field and his overaiming, short-arm throw to the FB that should've been caught anyway.

I would have zero hesitation to take him @#5.

Or is it due to Oregon having a month to gameplan for him? It's no surprise that both of these teams defenses were suddenly strong after sucking all season. That kind of defensive play is what Newton will face every week in the NFL (unless he's playing against us :D). Expect more of the same out of Newton at least his first year or two in the NFL.

I am still mobbin Newton style.

Yup. Me, too. Take a chance on greatness. He has the potential to be a GREAT NFL quarterback. Something I don't see from the rest of this QB class. I don't expect him to be available when we pick, so I'm not going to order any #2 jerseys anytime soon.

Last nights game was played perfectly for us to have a chance at greatness. If he is at #5, we are some lucky redbirds.

I think Newton would do himself good to stay in school another year. I was leary of taking him at five before , but now I would rather have AJ Green or Nick Fairley at five. I think Newton just played himself out of the top ten picks for sure.

This is the first game I've looked at Newton with a discerning eye. I love the zip he puts on the ball, but the stands really flat-footed in the pocket. He can get away with it in college, but even with his athleticism, I think he's going to have to get up on his toes a little more and work on his stance in the pocket.

The big game is over, if he is heading to the draft, (he definitely is) The NCAA will now have no reason not to come after him.
My advise to Cam, pull out a camera, invite the family all the homies to take a million pics with you and the Heisman. Let everybody mugg it up doing the pose, have fun with it and then throw that thing on E-bay!
Sell it fast! I hear them coming for you. Get that cash, donate it to something cool. Donate that scratch to some kind of "Lap tops for Students" type of irony.
The NCAA got their big game, now they will want their trophy back, because after all, their honor is so important.

They are not coming after him. If they were, they would have done it already. It is much better for the NCAA to levy penalties before the games are played and awards given than to take them away afterwards.

So what physical tools doesn't he have? Are you saying he runs too well to be an NFL QB?

Once again, if his mind is right, Newt should be "gut".

Having watched many of Newtons games and all of Ryan Mallets games I have been switching back and forth as to who will make the better NFL QB. My last thought was Newton had the most upside but now I am back to Mallet as he is the prototype NFL pocket QB who has the courage to hang in the pocket until the last moment. He has perhaps the strongest arm in college football and that includes Newton. It will probably take 2 years for him to mature into a good NFL QB. He is a lot smarter than most people seem to realize and probably football smarter than Newton. He goes through his progressions very well and will quickly change the call at the LOFS after looking over the defense. He has a quick over the top passing motion and at 6'7" sees the field. He is very accurate on passes to receivers over the middle in tight coverage as he can throw bullets. He needs some coaching on his footwork. He does have some es-capability and is not a statue. He throws well when moving to the left or right. He set all sorts of school and SEC records for passing. Newton is what he is. A winner. He like Mallet will like all QBs will be a gamble. Each team will do their own evaluation and do what they think is best. The NFL may not like either. All any of us can do is watch them and guess. Kiper now has dropped both Mallet and Newton into the second round and moved up Gabbert to the #7 position on his draft board.

Last nights game was very interesting in that both teams use a no huddle offense just like the Colts. Is there a message here? At the beginning of the game I was really impressed with the Oregon offensive scheme. I felt over time the big Auburn line would wear Oregon down if they could hold their speed receivers and runners in check. That they did. The SEC has now won 6 consecutive national championships. Last night I give the MVP to the Auburn defense. They just did not let the talented Oregon runners turn the corner or fool them with an offense that had me fooled most of the time. I could see why Oregon could overwhelm teams with such a scheme and talent. Auburn has a couple of linemen and LBs that will be playing in the NFL. Newton was clearly in pain the last 5 minutes or so of the game. You could see the grimacing on his face. When he gets to the NFL he is going to learn he cannot run over LBs and DBs like he does in college. By not sliding on one of his last runs he took a hit that did some damage. In the NFL he might get his head knocked off if he does not learn to slide.

Take away Newtons running ability and what do you have? He has always been a running QB so he is going to learn how to be more of a pocket type QB. Vick has been great but all the hits he is taking is taking its toll. His season could come to an end at any time and that is a problem with scrambling QBs. This is also why the Eagles cannot afford to let go of Kolb. Terry Bradshaw came into the NFL and during his first year thought he could run over people. He soon found out that did not work and he developed into an all pro. People also thought Terry was stupid. Stupid like a fox as it turned out. Mallet is not a running QB and when he does run he is smart enough to slide most of the time. I now think Mallet is more ready for the NFL than Newton. Newton may develop into an all pro but it want happen over a few seasons. Mallet will be a starter before Newton IMHO. It is going to be fun watching how the pros and gurus finally line up these QBs as to who is the best. I just hope we take one and take him with our first pick as the better ones will be gone in round 2.

I don't need to name one. Take the BPA, which will not be a QB and will likely be a pass rusher.

I doubt it. The BPA will likely be a defensive tackle, cornerback, 4-3 defensive end, or wide receiver, whether or not any of the quarterbacks are taken.

wishy washy.

How is it wishy washy to not want to take a QB at 5? Andrew Luck was the only QB I've wanted in this draft in the top 15 ffs. I've been a fan of drafting defense the entire time we've discussed this. There are pass rushers up there, and two stand out corners. I will be happy with whatever we take at #5 so long as we don't reach for a project QB there.

Wishy washy that. I've been consistent here...draft D unless you can get Andrew Luck. It is impossible now to get Luck, so D all the way.

There are also NO offensive linemen worth even considering for a millisecond in the top half of the first round, so that makes it even more a no-brainer to get defense.

BPA isn't wishy washy, Mulli Brown.

WR will be gone. Fairely will be gone. I'm guessing Peterson will be gone.

You'll have Quinn, Bowers, Prince, Dareus. Those will be BPA when we pick, I'm guessing. Give me any of them.

Why in the hell would I fixate on one guy at this point when we don't have a DC, haven't had the combine, aren't even in the offseason yet?

Take the BPA at #5 which will 99% positively be a defensive player. That's it. No brainer. There isn't a QB in this draft worth throwing a #5 pick at, and the only WR with top 5 talent will thankfully be drafted already.

Who's taking whom? You can't just throw those out there...

1. Carolina Panthers - Fairley, DT, Auburn. I don't care how much they like Nick Hayden. Fairley's a stud.
2. Denver Broncos - DaQuan Bowers, DE, Clemson. Pass rushers always go high. This'll be a value pick for Denver, especially if they hire John Fox, who knows that he can pair Bowers with returning DE/OLB Elvis Dumervil and scare the pants off Phillip Rivers.
3. Buffalo Bills - Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina. I hope this happens. NT Kyle Williams lead the Bills in sacks this season with 5.5. Aaron Maybin has been a colossal bust for them.
4. Cincinnati Bengals - Maybe A.J. Green? I don't know how committed they are to T.O. or Ochocinco. If Blaine Gabbert checks out he might be the pick here. They certainly have cornerbacks you can go to war with.

So at 5 you're left with both cornerbacks, either A.J. Green or Blaine Gabbert, and 2 4-3 DEs in Marcel Dareus and Adrian Clayborn. Three if you want to look a little further down the board at Allen Bailey.

Fairley to the panthers, I think that might be a lock.
Broncs take peterson, IMO
Bills might go Gabbert - if not they take bowers or quinn.
Bengals go with Green, or entertain a trade with someone enamored with a QB to get in front of us (if Gabbert still there).

One of those might take either bowers or quinn, but one of the two will make it to us IMO.

I think we will have a choice between Bowers/Quinn, Dareus and Prince.

And if by chance Quinn and Bowers are both gone, that means peterson is on the board.

And you take him. And run. Flat. Out. Stud.
