No Kobe now that Nash is signed. Does that make anyone mad?

"Bringing in Nash eliminates the Suns from the Kobe Bryant derby. On Wednesday night, it was reported that Phoenix was prepared to offer Bryant a six-year deal worth over $100 million."

I am not to sad we are officially out of the Kobe sweepstakes. He would have been nice, but then JJ or Amare isn't needed in that case, IMHO. This way we keep our guys, so far.

5 years at 65 million. Does that make anyone mad? I don't think Nash will be with us for 5 years, so it doesn't matter. Roughly more than 10 million this year does seem steep. Maybe we should have gone cheaper since it seems we are lining up for Okur instead of keeping Dampier money available! That would make me mad if we lose out on a decent center and get Okur instead!

I thought we had a pretty good chance, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but Nash is a pretty good consolation prize.

I would rather resign McDyess than sign Okur. The Amare/Antonio combination worked well at the end of last season. Let's leave some money available for next year or getting involved in some other trades with our cap money.

Do you feel we overpaid for Nash? I was kinda hoping we would have kept more cap space alive for a good center. I don't consider Okur to be good since you are paying for his "potential" and he's basically a project. We have projects at center already.

Of course I feel we overpaid Nash. But from a basketball standpoint, which is what really matters, it was a good move.

Do you think it will maybe cost us a higher tier center? I want Dampier, or go with someone else other than Okur. Maybe we are just going to resign McDyess and call it good?

MAD DOESN'T BEGIN TO DESCRIBE WHAT I AM RIGHT NOW!!!

skorp can testify, despite anything that ever happened with the cards, i have never spun outta control like i feel i'm doing now. never, NEVER, have i felt so betrayed by one of my teams.

nash IS a good consolation prize, but he is just that . . . a CONSOLATION prize. that's for losers. we ain't contending with this team unless amare become a transcendent player, and while i'm HOPING that happens, it is far from a sure thing.

that's just it - this feels like a move the Cardinals would make and people would be jumping for joy - yeah we probably going back to the playoffs! I expect more from the Suns - I guess I shouldn't anymore - I should realize that the 1988-1995 period was an anomaly instead of the norm.

So what was it, Kobe or broke? I mean, we did nothing to our core, and we picked up an All-Star-caliber point guard. What else do you want us to do?

As for the money remaining--the amount we still have probably will be enough for all the centers left except for Dampier and Camby, both of which played great in a contract year, and both of which have stated their desires already--Damp wants to play in the East, and Camby wants to resign with the Nuggets.

What else did you want?

And what "more" are you expecting? This is an ignorant statement, IMO, because outside of signing Kobe, this was probably close to the best we could do.

I support the signing 110%, even if I don't like the alleged money numbers.

it's not so much that we signed nash. i like him as a consolation prize (and i'll stress CONSOLATION prize), but rather, it's the ridiculous amount of our cap that it took to sign him. he won't be worth his contract within 3 years. and then we're back in CAP HELL 'cuz marion is close to max, jj will be too, and amare will be maxed and we'll be stuck with a 50 win team and unable to add any pieces 'cuz our old broken down stevie nash is eating up over $14M on our cap. THAT's why i'm mad. THAT, and the fact that i can just feel okur on the way . . .

I don't like the fact that we in essence gave up our future in draft picks and Marbury for a guy who likeoly won't even play 35 minutes anight and will be strangling our cap from here to kingdom come Chap - that's what I don't like. This team as you see it right now is our team for 5 years - do you honestly see this team EVER challenging for a title?

There were two guys out there this offseason that coul have made a huge difference - even if it meant breaking up our great core which without a huge losing streak by the Clips - would have been dead last in the western conference - and apparently we didn't have what it took to get either of them. Special players win titles - I can only now pray that Amare not only meets my expectations - which are unbelievably high - but goes beyond them - otherwise we are second round fodder for the foreseeable future.

I'd just like to know if we even offered Kobe a max contract - or if what we really offered for T-Mac.

What else do I want? Assurances we won't sign Okur for $6 million or more! There are some other guys out there I would be OK with. McDyess and leave some cap room, and I would be OK with that.

I would have been OK with HUdson, or someone like that at the point. Even an old guy like Fischer. I guess I would be clapping if we signed Nash starting at 7-8 million a year. That would hyave left 8 to 9 million in cap and we could have got one or two more guys with that money. :)

I kinda remember people saying the same thing about those crapping in their pants about the Cards last offseason - sadly the only people laughing during the actual season were those crapping in their pants while watching everyone else wonder why the team sucked ass so badly.

Hope to God I'm wrong - I don't want to watch another mediocre Suns team for here to eternity - but that's what I forsee and more times than not with sports - I'm right.

Steve Nash has played nearly full seasons the last 3 years--in 01-02, he played in all 82 reg season games, in 02-03, he also played in all 82, and last year he played in 78 of those games.

So the injury-prone reasoning that Joe uses probably doesn't hold a lot of water, but he DID only play about 34 minutes per game the last few seasons. And there's nothing wrong with that. I don't know if I want ANY of our players playing more than 40 minutes a game. JJ and Marion did it, and we were a lottery team, what does that tell you?

This by no means makes us a playoff team, but there were at least a dozen games last year we lost down the stretch that a better or more experienced point guard may have won for us.

I like the move talent-wise. I just wish it was a little cheaper! How many guys at $10 million a year can we have on the team?

hey, I'm not the only one here that talks about his injuries. I'm not sure why you pointed me out. :) :)

Seriously though, and I'm not just trying to paint a pretty picture now that he is a Phoenix Sun, I think you are right about Steve Nash. They will just have to be careful with him. I don't think they can play him over 30-35 minutes per game, but that's OK on this team. They have Barbosa and JJ to back him up. I may not like the money he got , but I do like the signing. I just really hope they don't give the rest of the money to Okur. As someone else said I would rather have Antonio McDyess back.

You were the easiest to refer to. :)

Well, with what's left out there, I'd prefer McDyess and then maybe signing another of the centers remaining to a minimum deal--those that will take the minimum, of course.

Vlade and McDyess would be huge. I would actually be happy with Nash, McDyess, and Vlade. Our bench would be so much better and we would have the vet leadership we have missed since Bo was traded.

I'd take that. Suns seriously lacked depth last year, so moves like this would be perfect.

I think Vlade will be a $10 million a year guy, even with his age. Sac town will resign him. :)

chris - I would love that but no way are we gonna get both Dice and Divac for 6 million - unless Vlade got the rest of the change and Dice got the exemption - then I would be so miffed about this signing - but I still don't know what it does for our title hopes - which should be the main goal - we are the Suns - not the Cardinals.
