Chicago is in the catbird's seat and they know it. All they have to do is keep saying "no", and the Lakers will eventually send them Kobe for Ben Wallace, Chris Duhon and a PTBNL.

IMO the Lakers would rather send Kobe away for nothing than put him on a good team in the West.

As a Laker fan what makes this situation unique is that we've gone through it before with Shaq just a few years ago. You have no idea how badly LA fans would riot and boycott the Lakers if they let Kobe go for scraps. Jerry Buss and his team are fully aware of this and ALL reports coming out are that trade talks are at a standstill. The Lakers are not satisfied with any deal they've seen thus far. According to inside sources, Buss is demanding that all trade talks begin with the star of the other team. For Dallas this means Dirk and for Chicago this means Deng.

As a fan I'm fully aware that we're not getting back equal talent for Kobe. But this doesn't mean we need to let him go for thirty cents on the dollar. He's the best player in the league and I believe that merits at least one legitimate star coming back in a trade. Hell even the T-wolves got Jefferson for KG.

This is why it is highly unlikely something gets done now. It is more likely that a trade occurs next offseason or near the trade deadline. But of course this is LA, and anything can happen.

Kobe must have a modicum of control over a prospective trade. The mention of Shaq is interesting. I can't see Kobe in Phoenix for the simple reason that he wants (and needs to be "the" team voice). That is why he struggled with Shaq as another dominant personality on the team. Phoenix is Nash's squad and the FO likes it that way (a positive, team oriented guy that reflects their vision). Dallas would work because Dirk does not have that type of personality. Chicago would work as well. Kobe wants to win but equally importantly his ego necessitates that it is under his leadership.

Will someone please explain why the HELL the Lakers would trade Kobe within their own conference for two players in their prime and two low first round picks.....

It SCREAMS mediocrity for the next 10 years....

Don't you think IFthey do trade Kobe it will be for young talent... and NOT a 28 and 30 year old.....

It doesn't make sense.....

I could see a trade that involves Barbosa, Gordon, D. Howard, Lebron, Carmelo, ect.... Young Superstars that are under 25 and can be a force... NOT two role players (even though one is a super role player) and two scrubs they would get with their draft picks....

Now i the trade was Kobe, for Harris, Terry, Howard and two first wound picks... I can see the Lakers doing it... but Dallas will be left with Kobe, Dirk, and.... Erika.... the Mavs wouldn't do it.....

The bottom line is a deal doesn't seem to work out for both teams and that is why a deal won't ever happen... IMO

The scary thing right now about being a Laker fan isn't that they might trade Kobe. It's that they couldn't build a winner AROUND Kobe, so how the hell do they expect to build a winner WITHOUT him.

The organization has really gone downhill fast. Started the day Jerry West left. This is it culminating.

if the mavs can pull off a deal based around howard for kobe, the suns are in deep trouble. They have a hard enough time guarding kobe as it is, but then they'd have to guard dirk at the same time too? man would that suck.

on another note, what are the chances howard becomes marion a few years down the road? "i'm tired of hearing my name in trades all the time when i've done nothing but my absolute best for this team". hmmm, interesting

The more you look at the situation the more you realize that no deal seems plausible if the Lakers aren't looking to get butt raped.

Most teams face a catch 22. You have to have a lot of promising you players and draft picks to do a deal, but then you end up with a weak team the star doesn't want to go to.

I'll give Danny Aigne credit in that I did not think he could pull it off in getting Allen and KG, but he had little to lose. It wasn't like his team was going anywhere and did manage to keep his one star. It may not work, but it was certainly fluke that he had the picks and prospects and was stealing from bad teams that knew they had to rebuild.

I'm not sure the Lakers realize that. They are still a playoff team, but without Kobe they are a early to mid lottery no matter who they get (no, Dirk is not going to become a Laker). You'd think they'd be more interested in what the Bulls have to offer, but nobody they'd get would bring them to the playoffs.

Raja's got Kobe, wherever the heck he plays. Platoon against Dirk, and the Mavs won't have anyone else that could beat us.

Kobe to Dallas? Won't happen, but if it did, it's no big deal.

Raja's got Kobe? Kobe averaged 30 ppg on 48% shooting along with 5 assists and 5 boards in the last two series against us. That's "getting someone"? Sure he made Kobe work, but Kobe still got his... and that was with NOTHING else on his team even remotely close to Dirk. Putting the two of those guys together would be a big problem.

Dont get me wrong, I would be scared to death of kobe on the mavs. But it would definitely change their team.

Avery has setup each guy to play their roles perfectly. If they trade terry/howard for kobe, some issues arise:

1) is devin harris ready to play point
2) their main offense is the pick and roll with terry/dirk, and find a way to setup dirk or howard in the middle of the floor to go to work, with this trade they would have to completely change their offensive philosophy.

Again, I don't doubt they'll be a better and scarier team, but it will take them time as they are kind of overhauling the way they want to play.

Stein saying a deal seems more inevitable by the day... I just hope he goes east

I believe these things to be true.

1. Kobe will not play for the Suns.
2. Kobe will not be traded for Dirk, though he might go to Dallas.
3. The ATL pick is no longer very valuable, the Hawks will be good this year.

IMO, the Lakers should ask for Oden or Durant.

If you know anything about the Laker owner Jerry Buss it's that he's a very good poker player. A lot of people close to both Kobe and the Laker FO are saying that this whole thing is a bunch of bluffing by both sides. In the end, the most likely scenario is that Kobe goes nowhere and then opts out of his contract later to play for another team.

That's pretty much my thought on the whole thing.

And now Kobe is back at practice and playing in tomorrow's game.

Much ado about nothing. Jeez, every time he sneezes this season trade rumors will be blowing.

Why? WHY? Because what is the point of having Kobe for a year and he then opts out? You might as well get something for him while you can.

By the way, the lakers are better than mediocor? When did that happen?

Usually when a team makes the playoffs in the West, that's pretty good evidence they are better than mediocre.
