EDIT: After typing this I realized it's long.and rambling so read at your own risk... lol

Some 10 years or so ago, I quit smoking cigarettes. I used to really like fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Turkey too, especially a day or two old as a sandwich with mayo, lettuce and pico. I used to hunt quail, pheasant and doves and had no problem eating any fowl... Didn't particularly like duck, but I'd eat it.

One day my taste for chicken or all fowl for that matter, just disappeared. Now the smell of raw chicken just nauseates me. I can't stand the smell, can't eat it either, taste is funky... You can even try to hide it in a green chili chicken enchilada and I get the smell and won't eat it.

I attributed it to my taste and olfactory senses going thru some kind of transformation because of no longer smoking. All I could think of was that could be the cause.

OK, well now, I am losing my taste for meat. To me, the cheaper cuts, or roasts or hamburger... I can't get past the smell, even when I know it's fresh.. Not sitting around in the fridge for a week.. I loved pot roast with potatoes and carrots, now I can't be in the same room when it's cooking, much less eat it. We make tacos once a week or so and I'm getting to where I can't stand the smell of hamburger being cooked. This is food I've eaten my whole life, I don't get it.. How it could change all of a sudden? .

I seem to do much better with pork... Grilled Chops, brats, posole mostly on the bar b que or a good ribeye goes down pretty easy. I love Ruth's Chris or Morton's but I recently ate the the new Ruth's here in Albq and it was border line with the smell. I usually eat mine and half of my wife's but I couldn't even get mine down. Bacon is becoming borderline too. Bacon, eggs was a staple, now not so much,

I do still like fish in moderation and either boiled or grilled shrimp. The vegetables I eat have remained fairly constant, radishes, carrots, celery, ásparagas, coleslaw, peppers, onions, sauerkraut, lettuce, but all those are just a vehicle for ranch dressing... lol.

I take a hard boiled egg, carton of yogurt that I mix with granola, banana, cottage cheese mixed with pinapple and an apple which I eat with those little cheese thingies you find at Costco. This is what I've taken to work every morning for years. I spread it throughout the day. Somehow I don't get tired of it.

Doesn't help that my wife is in some body toxin woo woo program and our food choices rarely intersect.
She doesn't eat eggs, bread, pasta..
I will say I've lost 10-12 lbs. by just eating the twigs and stems she makes for dinner. The mainstay of my picky-food-itis has been bean tostadas with red chili, spaghetti or hard salami.

After all this, does anyone else have the experience losing their taste for chicken/meat?

Gracias en antemano

Have you watched the documentary “What The Health?” It would likely ensure you would never eat a piece of meat ever again!

I've been in a slaughter house a couple of times so I know what that's all about.

As a point of trivia that may interest only me...

Back in the late 50's I lived in Phx and went to junior high at a long gone school... Baltz Elementary close to 40th st and Van Buren. There were stockyards and a Cudahy meat plant nearby. Smelled for miles. They took my class on a day trip there. Rude awakening for youngsters.

Honestly, I'd talk to your doctor about it, if you haven't already.

What Linderbee said.

I lost my sense of smell a few years ago; from something that was going around. I literally could not smell anything. Lasted about a year and eventually my sniffer started working. Mostly. Artificial ingredients have a very unappealing smell still. Certain body washes, premade lime jello, etc.

Anyway, when I was researching loss/change of smell can be related to other health related issues besides what I had.

Thanks guys. Pretty much baffling that the smell of chicken and now beef has become so unappealing. I'll talk with my doctor about it. I'm not due for an appointment until January but maybe I can move it up.

There is a tick whose bite makes you allergic to meat.

I was in North Dakota fishing this summer and found several ticks on me. Pretty sure I didn't get bitten and this condition predates my trip to ND. I dunno.

I've got a call in to an ear/nose/throat Dr as I wanted to get hearing checked anyway. So I'll see what she says.

ok, so after seeing my doctor and getting an ultrasound, I've been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. It's not life threatening, at the moment anyway, but there is no cure. Change in sense of smell and taste is a symptom, go figure!!

I changed my diet in the last few months to what I thought was healthier. Seems like half the stuff I thought I should be eating is wrong... lol. eg. Bananas, oranges, beans, coconut oil, nuts, bell peppers, spinach, yogurt etc. I gotta start all over.

Old age is reducing me to eating only twigs and stems...I got nuttin'

:( I'm glad you at least know what your diet should be looking like now.

I'm diabetic which means I'm a good bet for kidney problems eventually. I haven't looked one up yet but there are dieticians that specialize in diets for kidney disease - called 'renal dieticians'. You probably know that but I thought I'd mention it just in case you don't.

I'm stage 3 as well. Been there for a while. At least since 2010 when they discovered it. I never really noticed any changes in taste or smell though. With the proper meds you should be okay. My kidney function hasn't changed any since they discovered it which is good. Regular blood tests is the key to keeping an eye on it.

I've had my first appointment with a renal specialist. That's where I got info about my diet.

Thanks!!
