I...can't...let...it...go.

I'm all for trading the 16, 31, 59, the Milwaukee pick, the Miami pick and Chriss or Bender for whatever pick it takes to draft Young or Doncic. And if that's not enough, I'd even be willing to include the right to pick swap with ours in the next draft (without protection). I'd also be willing to swap out TJ for Chriss or Bender if we're taking Doncic.

I'm watching the Warriors game at the moment. If Young is going to be worth this much capital I think he would have to have the upside of Stephen Curry or Steve Nash. Maybe you view him this way, I don't recall. It's hard to get there watching Curry.[/QUOTE]

I think his potential puts him there with Nash and Curry. Very few players hit their potential so he'll probably not reach that lofty status. Still, you can be a very good player and not be the equal of either of those two at their best. But I think Young (assuming good health), at a minimum, will reach a level we won't likely get close to with any of those picks I'm suggesting we trade.

I agree P.H. I'm not too sure we'll see the old Patrick Beverly again... he seemed to be falling off a bit before his injury...

I'm hoping Young slides and the Suns can get him for less. I think playing like Curry should be the goal if the Suns like him. It's hard for me to visualize right now. Did you feel much the same about Curry when he was drafted?

I can't understand anyone purposefully putting Booker and Trae Young together. We may compare Book with Klay but if you're talking overall game instead of pure offense there is no comparison at all.

No. I thought he was going to be a very good 6th man but nothing more. But remember, the league hadn't cracked down on physical play against perimeter ball handlers at that time.

As you've seen, I'd give away a lot to add Young to this lineup. Defense is still important but over the past few years it's taken an even bigger backseat to offense. Ideally, I'd love a point guard that could defend, score from all 3 levels and run an offense. Few of those exist. If I have to sacrifice any of those, it's defense. In today's game, defense at the rim is far more important than individual D at the perimeter. I think coaching can make our guard tandem less of a liability on D and their offensive skills would put pressure on every opponent.

I like how you described Young in an older post.

He's got excellent handles for a Freshman in college but it's unlikely he'll reach Curry level. He can shoot, pass and see the court at NBA stardom level so I'd still agree he has 3 NBA skills in his pocket already.

If he can do these three things he should be a very good player indeed. Instead of doing player comparisons I think it is more accurate to look at skills.

I think a team could get by with a mediocre backcourt defensively so long as they have a good rim protector, a good wing defender, and a PF who can help on the weakside inside and cleans up the glass. Jackson should be a good wing defender but we need a strong PF and rim protector, Ayton may fill that rim protector role but he might also be our weakside rebounding forward on that end. If Bender can become a rim protector to play with Ayton, great, but I'm not holding out much hope for that. I think Bender has a better chance than Chriss though.

If we could add Faried, like one trade rumor someone posted, that could be interesting. I'm not a fan of him at this stage but Faried, Jackson, and Ayton should be a good enough frontcourt to make up for a Booker/Young backcourt. We'd probably need a good defensive guard to sub in during close games but that's something we could add after we make the playoffs.

I would say that Booker and Young would both have to improve to be mediocre. Igor may make that happen but I'd say its a long shot. Futhermore, I think Trae cuts into Bookers game a fair amount. Granted we need better three point shooting next to Booker to keep the defense honest but another big time scorer is likely to be tricky. Lillard and McCollum seem to be doing a fair job but they are not making the Blazers a contender. Fortunately, from my perspective, the odds of drafting Young are quite low so we are unlikely to ever know who is right.

Its really hard to know what is possible. We have had horrible coaching. I am beginning to wonder if that was on purpose. How better to tank than to go with inferior, cheap coaches? Certainly that was Watson. Still, that is so hugely risky because it has the potential of wasting your young talent.

It will be interesting to see what this team is like with a real, professional, coach. Igor is just that. We will have a real defense and a real offense. I am eager to see how these young players.

BTW. I am not so much a homer as I am optimistic.

Sorry. Not buying what you are shoveling. TJ has some significant value. He is a quality scorer on a good contract. The great thing is that he does not have to have the ball in his hands. High productivity for very low possession time.

By the way. A nice proven player on a good contract has lost of value--even in this draft.
"Nice"is a good description. He's a 20 ppg scorer on a team trying to get or stay above .500.

But that is just about all he offers. He doesn't excel in any other NBA skill.

So, yes, as you said, he does have some significant value ... to the right team.

Especially since he has been supplanted as our starting Small Forward.

I wouldn’t trade a lotto pick for him from another team’s perspective. He’s been in the league 4 years and hasn’t shown any signs of becoming a 3pt threat and isn’t a playmaker or defender for a SF. Maybe he takes that next step with better coaching/teammates. For his contract I think he’s good to have around on this team.
If he accepts a demotion to the coming off the bench.

This is just a friendly reminder that Zhaire Smith is absolutely ridiculous.

I’ll admit I didn’t watch Texas tech, but my god does that kid have hops. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 180-alley oop like that before. Holy cow. I’d rather take a flier on him at 16 than draft a career backup pg like Shamet.

Troy Brown over Holiday at #16. Sorry @Russ Smith

Holiday is a good all around player but he’s not overly talented. At least not nearly as Jrue.

He is a tweener, 2 in a 1's body. Love the kid but I don't see him as a starter. I would love for the Warriors to get him I think he'd be great off the bench.

I see him compared lots to Nick Johnson but I think that's just lazy, he's more of a 2 foot jumper like Nick so people make that comparison. the difference is he's got like a 5 inch bigger wingspan than Nick and I think he's 1-2 inches taller. Nick had to make a conversion to PG to stick in the NBA, Smith can play SG he's big enough and long enough he won't have to change positions.

More and more, I am really hoping we just go with BPA at 16 and worry about a PG at 31. I don't think we are getting an instant starting quality PG with anyone who is likely to be available at 16 anyway. But there is a lot of non-PG high ceiling talent (like Smith, Donte, Huerter, Thomas, etc.) that will still be on the board then. No need to force a pick and miss on someone who might turn out much better.

You can take a flyer on whichever PGs are left at 31. Maybe in a couple years they develop into a quality starter. I'm not sure there is anyone projected to be around at 16 who is really any better than bringing back Payton... or even (gag) Knight to man the spot next year.

Agreed. Still hoping we make a great trade, but if we stick at 16 and 31 I think you're spot on. After Young, SGA, and Sexton there is a pretty clear drop-off imho to a pretty deep group. More than one guy the Suns like should fall to 31. Just look at all the options:

Holiday
Shamet
Brunson
Milton
Okobo
Carter
Duval
Carr

I wouldn't mind Holiday if we didn't need a starting PG because I don't see him being a quality starter, especially in his rookie year. I don't think he's better than Payton or Knight, so we'd really be throwing that pick away on a backup PG who isn't a very good playmaker. That wouldn't be bad if we had a good starter ahead of him but we don't. We shouldn't settle for the best PG at #16 just because we need a PG. There should be players available there who project to be more than a good backup PG.

Use the #31 pick on the best PG that's on the board, that's fine, but using one of the first picks outside of the lottery for that is shortsighted. I'm kind of glad we didn't get the Bucks pick this year. It may make it harder to trade up, but I don't know if that's true. Being able to offer the #16 with that future pick could be more attractive to a team than #16 and #17 or #15 and #16, however that would have played out. A team that is interested in trading down would probably have more interest in adding another pick next year with a mid round pick this year than two mid round picks this year.

When you read Aaron Holiday's profile on thestepien he sounds exactly like Brandon Knight.
