But do you think we can play Bamba and Ayton together? Twin towers with Ayton at PF? I mean I’d be excited to try it but a bit skeptical that it would work in today’s nba. Particularly if we don’t have a pg who excels at the 3-ball and JJ doesn’t improve his 3 point accuracy.
Ayton and JJJr would be a better combo.

The Suns front court would be set for years to come. Jackson Jr. not only can guard the rim but spread the court at PF. Their front court would be formidable.

This would be the A+++ scenario. Re-sign Payton and the Suns are good to go.

Idk we could afford to redshirt him if he has the talent

I wonder if he could fall like Sullinger did. Maybe not as far, but Sully was at one time projected to be a top 2 pick and fell into the 20s iirc.

One thing I feel good about entering the draft, McDonough has thoroughly scoped out all the players in the draft, trades and free agency. If there is a chance to get a player that slides a little (perhaps like Young) he is crafty enough to get the job done. He can see the whole board like in a game of chess.

I hope he doesn't eat like Sullinger did. Regardless, he'd be a great gamble in the 20's but I can't see him getting anywhere near there unless the medical info is even more damning than anticipated.

I agree. I wouldn't take him even at 16 but IMO his risk/reward makes him a reasonable pick somewhere around 8 to 12. And he probably won't even drop that far.

Oh. I would take MPJr at #16, without a second thought.

It would be tempting. But you would have to resign yourself to quite possibly getting no return on that pick, kind of like with what Sacramento did last year taking Harry Giles.

So in regards to Young, I have a serious question: Given their defensive deficiencies, can Young and Book win a championship as our back court?

I think Young is dynamic. If he gets on this team we will be absolutely electric on Offense. I don't want to underscore that. But, I'm locked into championships NOT entertainment. And that's what I fear will be our future. Wildly entertaining with no rings.

It's kind of hard to find a good comp of a championship team that had a bad defensive back court. The closest I could think of was Dallas's with Geriatric Kidd, JJ, and Terry. But that's a far better defensive team than Young and Book. Kidd, right now, is a better defender than Book.

Given Book is our star, there is no way I trade up for Young. I especially wouldn't give up the bounty being suggested here for him at #8 in a deep-deep draft.

The question with Young is the same question you would have for Booker: Are there teachable aspects of defense that they can learn as they progress in their careers? The answer IMO is a resounding "yes" and I think it applies to Ayton as well.

I think with Young it might even be more simple than that. He was carrying such a huge offensive load, intense would have been difficult simply from a stamina perspective. I think there are things he can do. I would love to see Young come into the league as a 15 and 10 pg with good efficiency. That would be perfect. Average defense would be a huge plus.

i believe most 1 on 1 defensive skills are instinctual
but contributing to team defense, with 9 other guys running around you
is more dependent on training and experience.
it can be significantly improved

Let's compare Trae to Steve Nash for a moment.

Size: Virtually the same.
Speed: same
Shooting: very similar
Passing: Nash slightly better, but probably about the same at this age.
Defense: Young is probably better.
Steve Nash is a Suns institution. On his 2nd go-round. But he reached his absolute potential because he fit the SSOL program. One which petered him and the Suns out come playoff time.

The Suns of 2018-19 are not SSOL, so there really is no comparison of any Point Guard now to Steve. Good or bad.

I think there is no chance the suns get the Grizz pick. I just read they want to move down just a couple/few spots.

I’m resigned to drafting 16th

I feel a trade-up is likely if notable players start to slide. However, McDonough could stay put and draft Aaron Holiday. I'm would not be particularly excited about the pick but he does come from a solid basketball family and the Suns have worked him out twice.

In reference to working out Holiday twice.

Assistant General Manager Pat Connelly said the Suns didn’t have to ask Holiday twice.

“He’s really competitive,” Connelly said. “You watch UCLA and that competitiveness kind of stands out. … It wasn’t like we had to twist his arm to do it. It was, ‘No, you guys want me back, I’m back.’ That doesn’t always happen in this process.”

Holiday’s 3-point shooting – he shot 42.9 percent at UCLA last season – toughness and defensive mindset could make him an ideal backcourt partner for Devin Booker. But it was another aspect of Holiday’s game that impressed Oregon swingman Troy Brown Jr., who participated in Thursday’s workout.

“He’s somebody that comes out and plays hard every game,” Brown said. “You’re going to get his best every day. He reminds me a little bit of Russell Westbrook with that intensity and staying locked in.”

I'd be happy if the Suns addressed the PG position at #31 and go BPA at #16.

http://www.espn.com/nba/insider/sto...-deandre-ayton-luka-doncic-trae-young-lottery

This morning's Insider mock draft has some surprises (some continued over from yesterday):

  • SGA goes to the Magic at 6!
  • Trae Young falls all the way to 12
  • Jerome Robinson goes 13
I'll be disappointed if the Suns go Holiday at 16, but I'll get over it quickly and be excited to root for him at Summer League. But if Trae Young falls this far, I really hope the Suns move up to get him.

Thanks for posting. They lured me to their site but once there I couldn't see their latest mock. :wink2:

I like Shai but he would be a surprise at #6. Agree, the Suns need to move up to get Young if he falls that far. I guess his workouts were not that impressive. It's a shame he did not workout for the Suns.
