I agree. If it takes 2 first rounders, so be it. Look at what Sam Bradford has done for St. Louis. Sans an elite qb, (or defense which we are light years away from) there is no chance of succeeding in the NFL. Luck is as surefire a prospect as there has been in years. Git'er done.
And you'll recall the Rams did try to trade out of that slot last year so you never know.

I thought the story was that he left when Tebow announced he was coming back for his senior year, and then he didn't want to sit out a year from football. Officially, at least, Newton wasn't kicked out of school.
He was kicked out of school, it's almost universally known at this point. I remember because UofA recruited him.

What is your estimation of Mallet's talent based on? His size? His arm strength? Watching him play in a Mickey Mouse offensive system?
I missed this. Petrino's system is about half of "Mickey Mouse" as Oklahoma's and Sam Bradford is doing just fine. Josh Freeman's system in college was a similar spread. It's about accuracy, arm strength, intangibles, work ethic, etc. more than what system you played under in college. A smart, hard-working kid with the necessary physical requirements will figure it out.

And speaking of Freeman, his completion % also jumped over 10% in between seasons in his career.

And like Freeman, I'd be happy to take Mallett with the 17th overall pick. But the Cards would be picking 5th overall if we drafted today. Taking the second-best quarterback because you have a need at the position and the top guy is gone results in Levi Brown.

OT -- How crappy was the 2008 draft class?

1 1 1 Jake Long Dolphins T Michigan
2 2 Chris Long Rams DE Virginia
3 3 Matt Ryan Falcons QB Boston College
4 4 Darren McFadden Raiders RB Arkansas
5 5 Glenn Dorsey Chiefs DT Louisiana State
6 6 Vernon Gholston Jets DE Ohio State
7 7 Sedrick Ellis Saints DT USC
8 8 Derrick Harvey Jaguars DE Florida
9 9 Keith Rivers Bengals LB USC
10 10 Jerod Mayo Patriots LB Tennessee
11 11 Leotis McKelvin Bills DB Troy State
12 12 Ryan Clady Broncos T Boise State
13 13 Jonathan Stewart Panthers RB Oregon
14 14 Chris Williams Bears T Vanderbilt
15 15 Branden Albert Chiefs G Virginia
16 16 Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Cardinals DB Tennessee State
17 17 Gosder Cherilus Lions T Boston College
18 18 Joe Flacco Ravens QB Delaware
19 19 Jeff Otah Panthers T Pittsburgh
20 20 Aqib Talib Buccaneers DB Kansas
21 21 Sam Baker Falcons T USC
22 22 Felix Jones Cowboys RB Arkansas
23 23 Rashard Mendenhall Steelers RB Illinois
24 24 Chris Johnson Titans RB East Carolina
25 25 Mike Jenkins Cowboys DB South Florida
26 26 Duane Brown Texans T Virginia Tech
27 27 Antoine Cason Chargers DB Arizona
28 28 Lawrence Jackson Seahawks DE USC
29 29 Kentwan Ballmer 49ers DT North Carolina
30 30 Dustin Keller Jets TE Purdue
31 31 Kenny Phillips Giants DB Miami (FL)

All these bolded guys outright stink, and there's a group of them that aren't all that great shakes. Excellent RB class, though.

All those average players between 7 and 17 make it easy for me to say it is worth the risk taking the QB you like at 17 at 7, bypassing the non-QB's.

Not average. Ryan Clady is maybe the best offensive tackle in the NFL when he's healthy. Jerod Mayo is a Pro Bowl player. McKelvin is an above-average corner when he's healthy.

DTs are hard to scout--everyone knows that. There are first-round DTs that bust collossally or take forever to develop--Patterson in Philly is just now coming into his own. That's one reason that Chaos N. Suh deserves to be Defensive Rookie of the Year. Those guys don't come around that often.

You just CAN'T MISS on a Top 5 pick; it sets your team back a half-decade. If you miss on an OL at least you get a guy who can play somewhere. Same with a DB or linebacker. But if you pick a QB who can't play, you've crippled your team.

But I don't like Ryan Mallett. I think that people here cheering for him are talking up the next best quarterback because we need one so much. I don't really like the idea of taking the next best of anything in the top 5. If you do that, maybe you pass on Gerald McCoy, but you also end up with Adrian Peterson.

I have my doubts about Mallett because of his height...

but he is a Texas boy so maybe he is just what the Cards need. :D

I agree with K9. This team needs to improve the leagues worst defense if Luck is gone which he probably will be. Mallet is NFL ready mentally but he has too many red flags to be worth picking that high and most concerning of all is his dreadful footwork and streaky accuracy which is only marginally better than DAs.

Take anyone in Kiper's Top 5. Luck, Bowers, Green, Peterson or Amukamara.

Bump. :)

Mallett looked sharp in his first game. I am not saying I wished the Cards had drafted him, but he looked pretty good.

I wanted him in the second round all along, although no one else did. I think it speaks volumes that Belicheet had him as the top rated QB in this year's draft.

I was for taking him in the 3rd, where I think he went. We should have drafted him ahead of the TE, since we signed some in FA anyway but hindsight is always 20/20.
Even w/o knowing we'd sign the TE's I'd have made a decision between him and Justin Houston.

I never would have taken him in the first, but in the second round we should have pulled the trigger, IMO.
