I know I can't afford a BluRay player until they reach the $200 mark. So I'm staying with HD DVD until they stop making them. Just won't be buying any more HD DVDs until something more official comes out.

$279 for the Sony at Costco is pretty close. I think that price point isn't far off. Philips just introduced a player for $349 due in April. By Christmas everyone will own one.

I would say that I would keep buying too, but my movie budget has shrinked to just about zero.

I speculated that it would take at least 200M. Not surprised at all by this. I don't even think Microsoft can throw around 500M this. Assuming it is 500M. Warner played both sides admirably.

Even if it was around the 200 million mark that would still be tough because of the big pay day already paid out to the last studio looking for a payday for their support.

I agree. Well played Warner.

200M was twice as much as Paramount got. Not that far out of the question.

Your right. It's not out of the question but you still have to explain to your shareholders dishing out 300 Million just months apart if you do this just to push your own agenda...which by the way still had no guarantee of panning out.

Looking at how the PS3 was done, I'm not so sure they are all that worried. ;)

I dont buy for a minute that this is almost over.

Yuo guys are more knowledgeable than me but I just dont see it. You have three MAJOR and powerful movie companies that back the HD format. You have Microsoft arguably the most powerful company in the world in the HD corner. You have price in the HD corner.

I just dont think its as much a done deal as the rest of you. But time will tell.

Just so you are aware, Dreamworks and Paramount are NOT separate companies. Paramount owns Dreamworks and Universal is generally considered the worst DVD studio in the industry. Warner Bros. historically has been the best DVD studio, and I think them going with dual format releases was the catalyst for the war going on this long.

And another reason why people feel that this is the nail in the coffin for HDDVD.

I was just at Costco and the only thing I saw for display was a 249.00 HDDVD player. I couldnt find a Blu ray player at all. At their website all they have is a 379.00 Samsung.

That is probably because they sold out. I had to drive 50 miles in the Phoenix area to get one for my parents before Christmas to the only location that had any left. If you ask a clerk there next time, ask about the Sony Blu Ray players and they can look it up to see which locations still have them in stock. The price was $379 with an instant $100 rebate.

Costco is different from region to region, store to store.

Oh gotcha.

All I know is if you guys are right and this is over. The HD DVD are going to plummet in price and I am going to buy a ton of them. Cant beat the quality and will be worth every penny. May even buy an extra player or two and store them for when my others go out.

Exactly. Absolutely nothing wrong with the movies. If laserdiscs weren't the size of LP's I would have jumped on that technology.

I could easily see the players dropping to under 100 bucks and the DVDs dropping to about 5-10 bucks. I will buy them up and the more I think about it probably buy 3 or 4 players and just store them.

That'll be awhile. It took a few years after laserdisc stopped production for those prices to go so low. And at a certain point, players just disappeared from store shelves. You have to be very invested and pay a lot of attention to what is happening.

HD-DVD will continue on through the summer, but after that, it's pretty much all going to be ebay.

Yep I agree. But when the stores discontinue them they will drop the prices especially on the discs and I will be there waiting :)

Well... we've had SOME confirmation this morning of the details of the Financial Times story from last night. While the studio isn't yet commenting, reliable industry sources are telling us that Paramount is indeed preparing to end their HD-DVD support and announce a return to the Blu-ray fold. Details are currently being finalized, and an announcement is expected as soon as they're complete. Paramount's first new Blu-rays will almost certainly include many of those titles that were cancelled last year, but that were already packaged and ready for shipping, so you could see them in stores very quickly once the studio announces.

Meanwhile, sources are telling us that Universal has also been talking with the BDA, and is looking to follow Paramount and Warner's lead as soon as possible.

On a related note, Times Online in the U.K. is now reporting that as many as 20 additional firms currently backing HD-DVD are also considering defection in the wake of Warner's Friday announcement, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, Kenwood and Pony Canyon (which is a major Japanese film and music studio).

What's more, word is starting to circulate at CES that major big box retailers will begin winding down in-store support for HD-DVD as soon as these studios go public with their decisions. We're told that the industry's major retail partners are already pressuring Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal to go Blu following Warner's decision.

Rumors are also beginning to circulate here that Apple's Steve Jobs may announce the addition of Blu-ray Disc drives to their Mac desktop lineup at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

We would caution you to keep in mind that all of this should be considered unofficial until the studios make their actual announcements. Things are moving very fast, and the situation is highly fluid. Still, it really looks like this is the end for HD-DVD, and the end of the format war overall. We'll keep you up to date with new developments as they break.

Stay tuned...

HD DVD's life seems to be coming to an end quicker than most expected.
