this was speculated for too long but glad its finally here. figured they would wait until CES to make the announcment but i guess its close enough.

universal will be next to either jump ship or go at least neutral.

Complete 180 you have had.

I wanted HD DVD to win. I own 22 HD DVDs and Heroes compared to two Blu Rays. But the format war has become annoying. I want to see Star Wars in HD. I honestly think this is the end. I'll be keeping my HD DVD player and collection but I doubt I'll buy anymore, except maybe the Kingdom if its cheap :)

I bought the kingdom on HD. Its fantastic.

Now that this has happened what is a current list of studios that are exclusive to each. And which ones produce both?

No one produces both to my knowledge, at least outside of small studios like porn or whatever.

I think the list is:

HD DVD: Paramount, Dreamworks, Universal

Blu Ray: everyone else

Well there are def movies that come out in both formats so that cant be true?

I dont think this is close to being over personally. Thats still a lot of hollywood firepower in HDDVD's corner.

Warner was the only studio releasing on both. This will have a huge effect. I think you'll start to see retailers blowing out HD DVD and getting rid of it all together. It will be completely dead by summertime. I expect to see Universal on Blu Ray shortly.

Well darn!

I still havent moved forward with either, but I was leaning towards HD, simply cuz of price. I wonder how much of an effect this new news will have?

In the short term, not much.

Warner plans on waiting until May to stop selling HDDVD. Expect everything to start going down then.

In the meantime, you will find cheaper HDDVDs and PS3/Blurays to stay at the same price.

I dont buy for a minute that this is almost over.

Yuo guys are more knowledgeable than me but I just dont see it. You have three MAJOR and powerful movie companies that back the HD format. You have Microsoft arguably the most powerful company in the world in the HD corner. You have price in the HD corner.

I just dont think its as much a done deal as the rest of you. But time will tell.

Paramount and Dreamworks are one in the same. The HD DVD Promo Group just cancelled their CES 2008 press event. Word is that this may be the end.

cancelling their conference at CES is pretty big. i dont blame them though.

new line announced going blu exclusive also, not huge news since they would more than likely follow wb.

My brother in law is at the CES. He told me that it is going around at CES that Warner received 250M to $500M in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support.

Holy cow!!!!

I speculated that it would take at least 200M. Not surprised at all by this. I don't even think Microsoft can throw around 500M this. Assuming it is 500M. Warner played both sides admirably.

Yeah, the talk is now that retailers will be discontinuing HD DVD. Its over. Turn out the lights. Maybe we'll get some cheap ass movies though.

I know I can't afford a BluRay player until they reach the $200 mark. So I'm staying with HD DVD until they stop making them. Just won't be buying any more HD DVDs until something more official comes out.
