After the trade, the rotation looks like this:

Nash
Carter
Hill
Frye
Lopez

Dragic
Dudley
Pietrus
Childress
Hakim
Gortart

11 quality players. 2 have to be dealt for 1 so we can get to a solid 10 man rotation. What do we need and who is on the block? I think we should make a move for a better PF and move Frye to the bench.

Pipe Dream:
Hakim and Dudley for Josh Smith
-I would have thrown in Childress or Pietrus instead but they aren't eligible according to ESPN's trade machine

Realistic:
Hakim and Childress for Boris Diaw
-Larry Brown loves him and we have a love/hate relationship with him but dude is good fit on this team.

No Boris. No Banks. No Hedo. :bang:

The Suns just got of a huge hole with Hedo.

Haha, I know Boris has caused us a lot of headaches but look at the list of PFs and who is realistically available:

http://espn.go.com/nba/players/_/position/pf/league/nba

There's not that many options for an upgrade over Frye.

I whiffed on the Josh smith trade, I forget that Jared's MLE contract doesn't kick in until next year. But man, if we can get Josh Smith......championship!

Boris? No thanks... it spoils a good game seeing him waddling about the floor. Besides, it would be cruel separating Larry from his love...

It seems like I'm the only one who's gotten over Boris' Donut Filled Era. Maybe I need to go back and watch some games from 06-07

This might not be the last Suns deal either. They're still working other avenues. With this trade, they have just as many wings as before.

We have to get down 10 or somebody is going to be unhappy and mess with the chemistry.

Carl Landry is on the outs in Sac-Town. I wonder if a Dudley for Landry trade would be considered.

I was thinking of other deals getting rid of one of our wings for a big as well. With rumors in Sacramento of either Thompson or Landry being on the outs, and the possibility of them wanting someone to take Garcia I thought of these:

VC/Lopez/1st for Daly/Thompson
or
2 of Childress/Pietrus/Dudley for Garcia and ONE of Landry/Thompson

Both deals drop us from 5 wings to 4 and gets us a legit PF.

They could also do something like VC for Brand or VC/2 1st's for Josh Smith

I'd even give them Orlando's pick. Childress could also be used in such a trade. I'm not sure about how the salaries match-up. However, the word is the Kings will not do the deal with Phoenix.

Carter has no future here. I don't even want him playing. He just takes away time from developing younger players. Give Childress more time.

So I am all for turning Carter's expiring into something interesting.

I think you guys are overvaluing Carl Landry. I think he's a pretty good BACKUP pf and while he'd start for us it's because of our weakness rather than his strength. I certainly wouldn't part with anything significant for him. Something like Pietrus and a 2nd round pick but long term, I'd rather have Childress than Landry. IIRC, his per minute rebounds have gone down each year and I think playing that position at 6-7 is probably taking it's toll on him.

What about this?:

Suns send:
Josh Childress to Charlotte
2011 #1 pick (lower) to Charlotte
Hakim Warrick to Atlanta
2011 #1 pick (higher) to Atlanta

Suns recieve:
Josh Smith

Hawks send:
Josh Smith

Hawks receive:
Boris Diaw (expiring)
Hakim Warrick
2011 #1 pick (higher)

Bobcats send:
Boris Diaw

Bobcats receive:
Josh Childress
2011 #1 pick (lower)

Suns get one of the better defending PFs in the league and immediately have one of the best defensive front courts in the league (and are actually very good defensively 2-5). Smith can roll to the basket and finish explosively and fill the Amare void.

Atlanta was rumored early this year to be shopping Smith. They get 2 PF options for this year to keep them afloat, Boris expires, and they get a pick that'll likely be around 20th.

Charlotte flips Boris' expiring deal for a 1st rounder and a nice role player in Childress. Though it does leave them very thin up front and Childress has a fairly long deal for a guy who's been out of the NBA for a while, which may be unappealing to the Bobcats. On the other hand, the Bobcats are dumb.

New Suns:

Gortat/Lopez
J. Smith/Frye
Hill/Dudley
Vinsanity/Pietrus
Nash/Dragic

Thats pretty damn solid. Versatile, strong defensively, a variety of offensive weapons, etc. Is it enough to beat LA? No, but its a team that if it gelled could maybe get hot like last year and make a run to the Conference finals.

Why do so many people believe that the Hawks want to move Smith?

I think it grew out of the belief that they couldn't justify all those high salaried players but it's since gained a lot of momentum. I have no idea if it's really a possibility but I'd trade our roster for the guy. We'd be horrible for several years but at least we'd have a star to build around.

I don't really like the thought of Josh Smith at PF, would be like revisiting Marion at PF.

Additionally the Suns could add RoLo to make the deal, the Hawks would have to move Etan Thomas to make the salaries work, likely to Charlotte to help with their loss of Boris' size. The Suns could start Gortat and use Siler and Barron at the backup 5.

Slide 7

Atlanta Hawks & Phoenix Suns

Atlanta Trades: Josh Smith, Maurice Evans

Phoenix Trades: Robin Lopez, Hakim Warrick & Earl Clark

This gives ATL a center but are the Suns ready to give up on RoLo?

Not really. Josh Smith is a Power Forward, he's undersized a bit but he's much better at defending PFs than SFs. He's stronger than he is quick. He's one of the top shot blockers in the league. Smiths got 2 inches and 10-20 lbs on Marion.

I am!

He is 6-9 240. Marion was 6-7 210. Smith is probably as close as there is to Amare in the NBA. He is a better shot blocker.

Rolo and VC for Smith would be a steal.

Rolo and VC plus the Orlando pick for Smith would still be a steal, IMO.

For the numbers to work it would have to be something like Pietrus, Warrick and Rolo for Smith.

Smith is only averaging 10 pts in 22 mins per game this year.

I haven't watched him play this year so I have no idea why his numbers would be down so much. Every time I've watched him in the past (admittedly, just a few games per year plus our matchups) he has been something special. I know I've heard a few things about his head but he's such an incredible athlete I'd risk it. I wouldn't hesitate to include Warrick if necessary although I like him as a backup 3.5.
