Brown's salary drops $2 million due to offseason absence

http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/matt-maiocco/browns-salary-drops-2-million-due-offseason-absence

Cornerback Tarell Brown chose to remain in Texas for most of the offseason and conduct workouts focused on increasing his speed.

As a result, he quickly saw $2 million get away from him.

A league source confirmed a Yahoo! Sports report Thursday morning that Brown forfeited a $2 million escalator in his contract for failure to complete the 2013 offseason workout clause in his contract. As a result, his base salary for the upcoming season falls from $2.925 million to $925,000.

----------------------------------

Fired agent: CB Tarell Brown told reporters who cover the 49ers that he found out via Twitter on Thursday that he forfeited $2 million in salary for this season for not attending the 49ers’ offseason workout program. After he learned his base salary was dropped to $925,000 in the final year of his contract, Brown told reporters that he immediately called his agent, Brian Overstreet, and fired him.

----------------------------------

LOL

Sure, blame your agent and fire him. How about instead you actually have your contract and any escalator clauses explained to you and put down on paper so you know what you have to do to maximize your contract. What a clown.

I mean come on...was he not in contact with any of his teammates in the offseason? You know - the guys who would ask "where the hell are you?"

Lame excuse.

He's from my HS alma mater...North Mesquite HS!

So is Devils coach Todd Graham, though he's a year younger than me. We used to play football & softball together...he's a good dude & hopefully I'll get to visit with him when ASU plays the Irish at Jerry world.:D Todd was a badass all state DB, WR.

one of the main reasons to have an agent at all is to explain all the legaleeze and details of the contract....I would have fired the guy too

True.. Agent probably did. But either way doesn't excuse you from reading YOUR OWN contact and knowing all the details. His fault ultimately and his alone.

It seems to be a conflict of interest for the team as most employers would call you to ask why you are not showing up, but by keeping silent the team gets to pocket two million.

You'll make excuses for anybody hahhahaa... It was HIS contact he signed it if he didn't know about it then he's a complete asshat. I don't care if he's got an agent.... Etc.... It's upon him to know what he's signing know the details and show up.

If I signed a contract full of incentives and escalator clauses I would find out immediately what was required of me to maximize the deal and make sure I did all I could to meet each goal - especially the clause where just showing up earns you another $2 million.

This is pathetic on a number of levels. Both the player and agent should be embarrassed.

That being said, it's kinda sad. A guy loses $2 million and another guy got fired. I know I probably shouldn't feel bad for them, but I do.

It's all on the player. You can bet the agent told him since his pay is based on the money earned and he negotiated it. The player didn't follow through and got what he deserved. Of course the players gonna fire hi agent at a minimum to try and save some face.

I think he handled it beautifully. He essentially said I hired a guy I thought I could trust to tell me everything going on in my contract. (Shane, I bet he didn't read it either. Thats why he PAYS SOMEONE A SHLOAD of money. To do it for him.) My agent didnt, I lose, he loses his job, no ill will to the org, lets move on.

That how a pro should handle it.

It may make him a sucker, or naive, but an asshat?

Me thinks you just like to kick people when theyre down.

And you are just going to assume he wasn't told? Agents are paid based on a % of the contract value. So the agent is just going to throw away thousands of dollars and not inform his client?

Even so this isn't some confusing multi million/billion dollar organization deal here that is so convoluted that you need attorneys out the wazoo and accountants etc... Its a contract to play sports with escalators and bonuses. If the player himself didnt make himself privy to the details then he is an ASSHAT as far as Im concerned. No different then the idiots who just hand their money over to an accountant and say manage my money yet never check on them and before you know it all their money has been squandered and embezzled and they are now broke.

Nobody to blame but yourself. No excuses.

You guys are lame. And anyone who thinks it's funny are lame. I pay ****'s to read contracts that I don't personally read all the damn time. It doesn't matter if it's rental agreements, car agreements, contracts for jobs, or marriage licenses, I have no f*cking clue what any of it says. People read that crap for a living, and those people aren't me.
