Went to alot of cards games in sun devil stadium towards the end it was getting bad because we sucked and so many fans of other teams were there saw alot of drunk cardinal fans antagonize fights, and then them acting like your supposed to join in , stupid mob mentality.

On top of it, being a million degrees I'm sure didn't help

Yep. Truth is he easily could've avoided getting beat up but was likely drunk and acting stupid,

Absolutely but I guess I don't consider getting jumped from behind and then ganged up on getting "beat up." To me if he issued the challenge and Jerry Rice jersey stepped up and they fought, that's getting beat up.

issuing a challenge, nobody speaks up, you start to walk away and get tackled from behind. To me that's being assaulted, especially when it wasn't 1 on 1.

I'm pretty sure that's why the police are asking people to call in with eye witness accounts, they're clearly planning on charging Jerry Rice jersey and his companions with something.

Been to about 3/4 of all NFL cities to see the Cardinals play (not SF yet, though). Only in KC and in Tampa (old stadium) did I have trouble with the home fans with threats of physical violence. Been to Philly three times, fans were fine. Been to Oakland -- and sat in the BLACK HOLE -- the fans were absolutely great! Don't let these incidents frighten you off from seeing the team on the road.

Of course I don't drink, and can have a sense of humor about myself and my team. And when the Cardinals lose, I wouldn't give the home fans the satisfaction of seeing me unhappy with how the events unfolded; I have to keep my outrage suppressed until I get back to my car.

How can you compare one of the most bitter rivalries to a 9er - Vikes game??

Um, I wasn't...

jeez, poor reading comprehension on this thread.

You said it was NFL games that had this more than college. Just sharing the ONE time in my life I got crap at a game. I'm 6'4" 245, so I don't usually have any trouble.

I live in Harrisburg..... and have been to every Cards/Philly game in that stadium since 1998. Including the Turkey day massacre.

I always have worn red or a jersey and....

Never..... Ever..... Have I seen a situation like this.

I don't instigate.... And I definitely don't mock anyone.

My lines for all away stadiums are:

The ____ are one of my favorite teams but I grew up in AZ.
This should be fun to watch but it is only for fun.
We can both agree that we want to come away from this one with ZERO injuries.
Good luck this season bro...

And bring enough beer to give some away.

The crazy thing is one would assume many 49er fans are also Giants fans and it's not that long ago that Giant fan Brian Stow nearly lost his life getting jumped by Dodger fans after a game. That story got so much attention here it just kills me that local fans would do the same thing to someone else.

Great point. That's exactly how I feel.

Skewed through the eyes of a Sun Devil.

There are a number of incidents that have happened at SDS against Arizona fans, including aggression, spitting, dumping beer, etc. I won't attend the rivalry game in Tempe.

To argue that it's sunshine and roses for us in your stadium is pure bias.

Yeah but "you guys" are ghetto ;)

My wife and I were at the playoff game in New Orleans and some meathead several rows above threw a beer bottle that hit me in the shoulder. About 5 guys, Saints fans, grabbed the dude, bitch slapped him and shoved him down the stairs. They apologized all over us so we were cool the rest of the game. They even apologized after Warner got knocked out.

btw, I hate the Saints anyway...:D

I went to the Cards/Broncos game last year and had no problems. Again, I am not one to talk crap or anything so that could help. Everyone there was laid back and nice. Maybe its because they legalized marijuana?? :p

Had the same experience there...very mellow. My wife wore her Elway jersey so we made an odd couple. Only comments I got were after Thomas threw his miracle TD pass , Bronco fans be, like, you kiddin me??

Alcohol. Take it out of the games and it will be less of an issue. That's what they will end up doing.

NOOOO Please do not do that. ANYTHING but that.

I was at that game also. For every jerk who gave me grief for wearing my Cards gear there were many others telling him/her to knock it off. We were spending our money in their town when they were recovering from Katrina.

After the game went to Café Dumond to have some coffee and Beignets. Still in my Jersey. Once I sat down all the Saints fans started singing the "who Dat" song. Near the end of the song I stood up and acknowledged them. Congratulated them on the win and wished them good luck in the playoffs. Saw them later in the a bar on Bourbon and we bought each other drinks and talked about the game.

I think what's missed is the importance of revenue...

that is gained by the home team/community when rival fans attend the game. . So, the reality is that by getting in a fight you are strongly discouraging other "fans" from ever coming to the game. Pretty stupid in the long-run because you're hurting your own team by your immature and selfish actions.

...And if someone is clearly down...you've WON...walk away..to keep kicking someone in the head is sadistic. Vicious dogs get put down...vicious humans should be treated no differently. Jail-time is NOT a severe enough punishment.

Mark, what do you have in mind for a more severe punishment? Make them buy Jags season tix? Mandate game attendance?? :D

You got that right. I sat on the visitors side and saw fights all the time. Luckily I'm a big guy and my tickets were located in an area with a bunch of ex-ASU offensive lineman, so we didn't have to many problems.

I do remember we were worried about the Raider fans one year. We didn't have a problem with them because they got in a fight with each other. Our tickets were down by the exit and as we were watching the fight up above and a guy was hit and tumbled down the concrete steps and hit the railing. He got back up and ran up the stairs to rejoin the fracas. I told my son if someone ever hits you and knocks you down the stairs and you hit the railing on the exit just keep on going out the exit and don't stop.

He laughs about it now and says thats the best advice hes ever gotten.

I'm shocked...again!!! Niner fans are the scumbag of the earth.

I saw a pretty similar fight involving a Rams fan and a bunch of Cardinals fans at the UofP stadium.

In this video you see the metal fence, well in the fight I saw in the parking lot of the Cardinal game they all fell over the fence and were all tangled together and caught up in the fence and fighting at the same time. It's a wonder someone didn't break their arm in that fence.

Last time the Cards played in Chicago, I was there and thought they had the best fan base of any visiting stadium I have been to. Of course, I've really never had any issues any place but the fans in Chicago were very friendly.

I thought the fans in Carolina were the nicest fans ever. Even when we were kicking their behind they were still nice to us. I don't even remember anybody giving us any crap at the bar before the game. Do you?

FYI the police are REALLY making a statement here that they consider this an assault by the 49er fans and are asking for any leads that can help them make an arrest. You can't watch a local news program without a story that gives you contact info if you saw anything.

What I saw this morning said even if the Viking fan declined to press charges, which so far he apparently has indicated he won't, they're going to pursue this.
Apparently at least one of the 49er fans involved was involved in an earlier incident at the same game which I assume is why the police are considering it an assault.

I still can't believe after the Brian Stow incident that any Bay Area sports fan does something like that.

FWIW, I'm not naive to suggest this doesn't happen at college games... of course it does. I will say however, that I got to the majority of ASU home games and I have never once witnessed anything close to this.
I've been to several UofA games and again, have never seen anything close to this. And I've been to games at Boston College, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC, UCLA, University of Florida, University of Tennessee and several others... and have while I have seen some minor pushing and shoving (at a USC game it was actually a bunch of girls), I have never seen anything close to the level of inhumanity as this, as well as several other similar incidents I've seen at many other NFL stadiums - including UoP!

If anyone believe this isn't a bigger issue at NFL games versus college, I'd love to also talk to you about some awesome oceanfront property you can gave in Missouri! ;)
it's significantly worse at NFL games which is a huge part of the reason I no longer have Cards tickets and have UA tickets now that I have a kid and want to take her to games (now I just have to figure out how to make time to go). Two biggest reasons...

1. No alcohol. I'd be willing to get Cards tickets again if they cut off alcohol sales within the stadium. Will never happen of course. I'll still go a game or two but will aim to get club level and avoid the nonsense.

2. Majority of a college game attendees are alumni of said school. And for those of us passionate abut our Alma mater we know its important to represent well. I've gone to many games in Tempe in Wildcat red and I can tell you it was either dumb drunk students who I'll forgive for being 19 or people who clearly never attended ASU that acted in poor taste. I've noticed it's similar demographic in Tucson, LA, Iowa, and other road games as well.

Admittedly, last night I was angry...

and NOT in a very forgiving mood. I'm just really tired of this. Incidents like this can forever change someone's life. (ie; Brian Snow/family man/ now has brain damage to deal with.) It saddens me to the point of wanting to see something seriously done about it.

IF it happened to one of us, or someone in our families, I would be LIVID!

It's football..it's a game.. it's supposed to be a shared, enjoyable moment that you think back on some years later and remember fondly.

BE SAFE, my friends...You're in our prayers.

Mark :)

Hey! Wisconsin...

Living in Charleston, S,C. I can attest to Carolina-people being very friendly. Charleston is the #1 tourist destination in the U.S. If you've never been..GO! You will have an AMAZING time! :)

My Son, Cbus, his lovely bride, and myself had a blast there. I said after that game that southern hospitality is real. Hell we were even allowed to smoke cigars in the bars there.

Perfectly stated... couldn't agree more.
