Mods, feel free to move this if it is inappropriate for this page.

I am just sick to my stomach and (my heart) today as I think about what happened to Ryan Williams last night. His real worth to this team was driven home to me when EVERY ONE of his teammates rallied to his side when he went down. That just doesn't happen to a normal rookie. My question is, what happens to him now? I mean, I know that he will end up having surgery, and that his season is probably done, and maybe even his career. If any of you know what that means to his family income now, could you please say what that is? Does he get paid by the franchise even though he is gone, or is he totally on his own now. I would appreciate any assistance that you can provide in this regard. Also, does the team have to eat his contract ?Thanks in advance.

he gets his contract paid for this year. The Cards aren't going to release him and if they would, they would have to come to an injury settlement. His career is not over and he'll be back next year.

The funny thing is everyone talks about how young he is. I think he's less than a year younger than Wells.

He will be fine. He got a 2.14 million dollar signing bonus and worst case scenario, we will get his salary from this year. If he can come back and make the team next year (fully expected)...he can make the rest of the money.

Feel really bad for the kid and the Cardinals but he got paid.

Per rotoworld: 7/31/2011: Signed a four-year, $5.007 million contract. The deal included a $2.14 million signing bonus.

Thanks guys. That makes it a little easier to bear. It's such a damned shame that he had this happen. I certainly hope and pray for his full recovery and a resumed career with the Cards. I can't help but feel that this may have a bigger effect on his ability to return as a real threat than many of us know or understand at this early date. I feel bad for the Cardinals as well, because they really thought they had it right this time.

Williams and Wells were both 21 the year they were drafted but Williams was 21 in April this year and Wells not until August 2009. So Chris is not quite 2 years older than Williams.

A guy if his size lived on the extreme speed of cuts.

He will take 1 year before he's even cutting on it a little bit.

He will take another season to trust his knee isn't going to blow out.

He'll be slower and less decisive....

This is a career killer...sad

I really hope you are wrong about this, but my common sense tells me you are more than likely right about this.

I just read Jerry Rice ruptured his Patella Tendon and made a full recovery. With today's medicine and advanced surgeries...He will probably be 100% but the mental facet it is what makes it hard. I was scared to play sports and the slightest pain or twinge scared me even more. Because it is a long process to recover. Harder than an ACL. The Patella Tendon attaches to the Quad muscle and goes over the knee cap. It is the same injury as the Achilles in the sense of rehab. If he can play without fear, he might be ok. I feel fine now, but it has been 6 years. RB's don't have 6 years.

Dude literally has never had a job. Not even summer work in high school. Save your money kid and see if Fitz can hook you up with University of Phoenix.

Cadillac Williams could never come back from this.....

1) He blew out his patella in both of his knees.

2) He was never a great running back in the first place, he averaged 3.8 YPC in his first two uninjured seasons, blew out both platellas, and came back to average 3.75 YPC the past two seasons. It's not exactly like he was the second coming of deion sanders and then was completely robbed of his talent. His stats are barely different than they were pre-injury and his y/p catch numbers have actually improved since then.

Some optimism RT @kentsomers: Ryan Williams should be able to return in 2012 and "not miss a beat," surgeon says. bit.ly/p0D0sU

So basically he is definitely out this year. That sucks, but hope he make a full recovery and throws up some great numbers for us next year.

Forgot which beat writer tweeted the link to the medical facts on it but once recovered after about 9 months it will be back at full strength. You cant say that about the other ligaments in the knee. So while the recovery time might be longer then an ACL, the lasting effects are not the same as busting an ACL.

Kid will be back to training camp at full strength apparently.

I do hate it for R Williams. How many plays a game do you think he was going to get?

Let's just say that most of the chapters of Ryan's life's book will have to be rewritten.

And that's not to say that Ryan still won't make it all the way back.

What it does say is that he now has a different path to follow (i.e. instead of working his way up the depth chart during this preseason, his new focus will need to be either (a) having a successful surgery and working hard during rehab to do all he has to do - including keeping that quad strong) or (b) pursuing a different line of work (if that's what he chooses to do with the tough hand he's been dealt).

He might look to O Brian Schofield for inspiration. Or from the kid who played at Rutgers (LeGrand?) who insists he plans to walk again (& I wouldn't bet against him).

I wouldn't bet against Ryan Williams either.

funny. in talking to orthopedic surgeons who are also cardinal fans I know, they say just the opposite.

i hope the above is right, but i'll set my expectations to none, trusting the two smartest people i know who do this stuff for a living and live and breathe cardinals over some doctor somers found in los angeles.

my guess? he's not even close to being ready for football for next season's TC, tries to get back into the game mid-way to late through the season and unfortunately, is never quite what we hoped he'd be.

Cheese ain't just blowing hot air. The first orho is our father. He's been a surgeon for a long time. He heard patella and said 2 years. The second ortho is someone with whom we've been close family friends for a long time (since he was 5 years old). He did an ortho-related sports program before redently joining one of the most respected surgical organizations in the country. So that's an older experienced ortho and a young hotshot ortho both advising worst case. Not good. Bummed because I was stoked for Ryan. Thought we might a Travis Henry on our hands.

That definitely doesn't sound promising. I have a meeting with my ortho surgeon tomorrow who was a Dr. for the Houston Texans and Astros, so I'm gonna ask his opinion as well for that type of injury lol
