Does that mean the name Chicago White Sauks is offensive? :D

Did you miss the part where I said I grew up in Phoenix? I am pretty sure that qualifies. And I am almost positive there a more than a few stereotyping nonsoutherners here in Chicago. Ooof.

Sort of kidding on the stereotype thing. Old Florida was obscenely racist to Blacks, Indians and Jews. Maybe it was those few years living in Chicago, as a kid, that made me see things differently.

PS. Phoenix is SW. Florida don't git any more South.

The offended and the sympathetic get to judge.

Fair enough.

Still a little vague.

Where is the tipping point ? People are offended by all sorts of things, and I would imagine that the offended and sympathetic would automatically say that something that offends them should go away, cause then they wouldn't be offended.

I guess it has to be a given number of offended people and their sympathizers have to have enough clout to have their problems rectified......LOL, yeah, now reading that out loud, it makes sense.

Fair enough.

Washington has already changed the name of one of their sports franchises, so I suspect they'll eventually do it again. After all, look how much safer DC got once the Bullet's went away.

Go Cards!!!

Don't get me started on this. I still hate the name Wizards. As a long time Bullet fan (back to the Baltimore days) it still pisses me off that they changed the name from Bullets to Wizards. I still have an old Bullet cap somewhere.

Don't forget the Washington Expos. (Different situation, I know, but still...)

Plus, how many teams were called "The Senators"?

Baseball
Washington Senators (1891–1899), played in the American Association and the National League.
Washington Senators 1901–1960, now the Minnesota Twins
Washington Senators (1912), played in the short-lived United States Baseball League
Washington Senators 1961–1971, now the Texas Rangers
American football
Washington Senators (NFL), an American football team that played from 1921–1922

Ding dong ditch/ninja knocking is or was knocking on people's front doors and running away. I am 42 years old and grew up in Phoenix. I also heard it was in use in Florida around the same time.

Brazil nuts being call ninja toes I only heard by people my grandparents age.

Never heard of the first one however I vividly remember the second one from my childhood. I remember my Father calling Brazil nuts that. Actually as a kid I assumed that was the correct name for that nut as I never knew any better.

I just asked several people at work that are not from AZ and they dont know what the knocking is either.

Good ol AZ, we have our own racist terms that noone else even knows. I dont even get the correlation but thats what is was called as a kid.

Maybe not all of Arizona? I grew up in Scottsdale and never heard them. I asked my wife about them and she lived in Tempe from 76 to 85 and she'd never heard them either but she grew up in New Hampshire which I think is somewhere outside of Arizona. I asked my son too and he's never heard of them and he's lived in west Phoenix since 96 and lived in Tempe from 76 to 85 but he was born in Germany. All I can conclude from this exhaustive study is that some people that have spent time in Arizona know these terms but some people don't. Weird.

I apologize for bringing it up.

I think it is great fodder and surprised that people dont know about oit. You learn something new every day, nothing to apologize for. I think its a interesting topic.

The real question - where the term came from? Mystery.

id ask my wife from NY but she would just yell at me for saying the word :)

Seriously. I don't recall the term being used at all in any other context expect for the rare brazil nut thing.

Loved eating there as a kid and my wife and I still eat there every chance we can. Great food/service and a family owned business. Origin of the name of the restaurant actually came from a mixing of the owner's names. They later borrowed characters from the book for promotional purposes. Just another example of the PC police ruining a good thing, IMHO.

The only Sambo's still open is in Santa Barbara, CA. So, if you make it over there to eat "every chance you get" you are much more of a high roller than I thought. Especially surprising with the way you push Dave Ramsey's stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo's

The point is, yes, it was named after the father and son who opened the business. Yet, it has been used as a slur against blacks. People didn't like it, and they changed the name or sold the restaurants. I did not know the offensiveness of the term "sambo" until the protests against the chain started. Just like I did not know how much of a slur "redskins" is to many NAs. Truly, the only reason the term Redskins is still in place, is the lack of societal and electoral presence of Native Americans. That is why it is still cool to use blatantly racial terms in regards to them.

I don't know the correct answer to that but I do know the incorrect answer is a 10 year old poll of 768 people get to decide.

I believe an early name for the city now known as Chicago was "Black Hawk."

I'm less concerned about whether "Redskins" is offensive to me than I am whether it's offensive to a lot of people of Native American heritage.

On that note - I spent many an hour doing research (for my own enjoyment) overlaying ancient Native American foot-paths and trade routes atop modern day road maps. (Esoteric, but I found it infectious, because "one thing would inevitably lead to another"). Among other things, I've concluded that most folks don't know very much about the fascinating history of the so-called "First People" (i.e. their idea of American history seems to start with Dolly Madison).

I don't think Dan Snyder is a bad man; just ignorant and misguided. I get the "lighten up with the PC" counter-argument, but I must confess that the name "Redskin" makes me uncomfortable because it makes a lot of other people in our society uncomfortable (& doesn't exactly reflect favorably on Snyder as an educated individual living in a modern day world). I don't list this issue in my Top 5 or 10, but I just hope Mr. Snyder changes his position.

Side-note - No problem with the thread remaining on this board because it's topical, it's on many peoples' minds and it involves the NFL.

I just think Snyder is the guy who still doesn't get that just because he chose to smoke and is now a "smoker" doesn't mean other people don't have the right to ask him to move or not smoke around them. His right to smoke doesn't supersede their right to breathe less polluted air(no such thing as fresh air these days).

He is convinced that he knows racism and bigotry when he sees it, he just doesn't see it with his football team, but draw horns and a beard on a pic of him and by gum he knows it's bigoted and he'll sue your pants off.

He's human, he just doesn't seem to get that he is.
