I agree about the D-backs, if it ain't one thing its the other.

Here's my take on the situation-the Cards and Segal both screwed up.If the Cards thought Pace was more of a priority then they should have drafted him first.Just because the Cards have 12-13 WR's in camp doesn't mean they can play. They are all retreads or haven't proven themselves at teh NFL level. To base your negotiations on how they look in camp is completely ludicrous.By that theory,if Wakefield and Dennis JOhnson were tearing up the camp then Pace would have been offered less. That theory makes Graves look even more incompetent,if that's possible.Segal screwed up by misreading the Cards and you have got to give Pace's agent credit for jumping on the deal.It all seem pretty easy to me.You have 2 guys and you split it with the guy YOU selected first getting a slightly bigger contract. That's just common sense.I think Graves was fearful of having both guys holdout and didn't want to deal with the media and fan backlash so he got one guy in and will deal with the other later.I don't think it's right what he did,but then again, it's the Cardinals we're talking about.I don't look for Johnson anytime soon, which makes the draft day trade look even more ridiculous.Or,maybe,Graves' vaunted background checks that he has to run on everybody before he can offer a contract turned out to be more favorable for Pace. That last statement was in jest but with Graves it may be true.Bring back Howdy.

I feel sorry for you if you take the media especially sports media as the gospel!

Unfortunately we are all probably guilty of this at one time or another. Maybe not as the gospel, but often times one hears (or reads) into it what one wants to. I know I've been guilty of it.

Does that make me a bad fan? To you probably. To me - anything good that happens, will just be a nice suprise.

Cheesy, if you can be a glass half-full with the DBacks, I will have to take my hat off to you. That is the most frustrating BB team I have ever encountered. Maybe I was spoiled by being a St. Louis Cardinals fan until the DBacks hit town. The BB Cardinals could do more with less than anyone. With all the talent the DBacks have, I don't understand how they can play so poorly.

I just had to check my web-site. I thought I was on a "Forty Whiners" board instead of on ASFN.

They're loaded with pitching, but they have no bats - that's why they sturggle so much. They miss Reggie Sanders' production from 2001 - this team desperately needs another guy that can hit 30 home runs and add some power to that line-up.

So, I've been a jerk all day too, eh? I didn't think I'd be dragged into this after about 10 pages of no posting, but I see that I am.

I never, ever EVER said that signing Pace was not a good idea. If you cared to read the thread through more thoroughly, I refuted people who were going off on the 'Rod is right, Johnson's agent is the one to blame, it's all Johnson, all Johnson, the Cards front office can do no wrong, blah blah blah' rants.

I'm glad Pace is in. I'll be glad if we can do enough bells and whistles to get Johnson in in the next few days, and NO later. Otherwise, we made a gambit and it backfired. The problem I have is that we've painted ourselves into a corner and HAVE to probably make the most incentive-laden offer we've ever made to Johnson. I don't think we'll do that, at least right away. Therefore, I am also upset.

But I guess that puts me in the 'jerk' boat. Thanks for such a succint contribution

This thread has morphed into a bad relationship thread, although at points it has been entertaining. It seems to have run its course, so let it die crimson. We all love the Cardinals. We may express it differently, and often feel differently about issues, but the fact is, we all live and die with every loss, and most of us love the Cards like family. That is why we all feel such passion for them. Darkside, ultra-optimistic, we are all on the same side in reality, the side that hopes like hell the Cardinals win. Hopefully we can all keep this in mind.....

cheesey went way over the line whereas you simply argued vehemently against graves and the cards. I disagree with you, but at least you did not insult peoples intelligence. thanks.

Actually - I think I said - "I WANT to be a ******." If you're gonna quote me, at least do so accurately.

Sorry to have insulted your intelligence, but I felt mine was being insulted by people that were making up assumptions as far as how Rod had dealt with this situation. It wasn't until at least 7 pages in that I lost it, and then later apologized for being so overheated later in the day. Do you really want this to keep going. Everyone here got over what happened today -is there a reason you keep going at it?

Whoo-hoo!!!

I read this whole miserable thread!! Where's my prize?
...

Oh well, I'll collect my own reward by taking an opportunity to post my own thoughts (shouldn't take long).

1) $900,000 left in rookie pool. BFD. That's an abstract number to the player. It will have little or no bearing on how much money Johnson has in the bank this time next year. Much less on the total price of the contract that the agent will be bragging about in another few weeks.

2) Note to people giving up hope on Johnson: They just signed Pace to what is arguably the most incentive laden deal in Card's history. This could mean the dam has burst and Johnson's contract can be as much or more creative. I think I saw an article this year about how Bidwill didn't like "creative" contracts because he felt it violated the spirit of the CBA. Looking at the description of Pace's contract it looks like he's changed his mind. Why should we assume he'll change it back when dealing with Johnson?

3) While its good to have the rookies in camp, they are still rookies. Most teams would assume their impact in their rookie years would be minimal. Its only because the Card's are in such a world of hurt at DL and WR that people got so excited today. The only thing it really buys is hope for next year, when they might not still be considered unproven rookies like Wendall Bryant.

By six PM this evening there were several high-powered reporters pissed at agent Joel Segal because he wasn't returning their phone calls.

Several reporters speculated that Pasquarelli's report was straight from Joel Segal's mouth.

Make of this what you will.

Good info Skkorp. It would not suprise me in the least. Do we have a picture of this shady Segal character? You know, in case I see him at a bar or pass him in the airport.

ESPN scooped everyone on this story, even beating the official site in getting it up. Somers only said a deal was close. Len P. gives all sorts of details on the deal. Where would he get that info from? Graves? No way. Of course it had to be the two agents.

Hmmm. I guess the gag order may be officially over. If true this does not bode well for getting the kid in anytime soon. IMho of course.

Johnson should be seriously considering getting a new agent tonight. It'll set him back a few days (the NFLPA has to approve the new agent), but it might actually gain him time, and money, in the long run. Bidwill and Graves aren't going to buckle under these sorts of tactics from any agent. The kid can hold out till October, and they won't bend.

The smart move for Johnson would be to get a new guy, maybe even Pace's agent, and start over.
