Apparently Peterson is fielding punts in camp.

With DRC gone I hope they are not dumb enough to throw Peterson out there. My guess is Roberts will return punts.:mulli:

Peterson is a machine returning punts...put his ass in there!!! Not many of those guys that I can remember ever get seriously hurt. PP21 is a weapon, use him.

I hope he does field punts and kickoff returns because aside from being a great CB in college, he has the makings of a playmaking return man. Football is a contact sport and sure it is a risk, but in my opinion we would be wasting a gifted player not allowing him to do something he is special at in the return game.

no way... if that guy has other world talent, he needs to be on the field as much as possible. Deion wasn't all world just because of the impact he made on the field on D, he was one of the most dynamic players in the game because he could make a huge impact in punt returns also.

can't play this game scared. Put our best foot forward, roll the dice with as many playmakers making plays whenever possible and let the chips fall where they may.

I am torn on this. I would hate to see him get hurt, but holy crap is he a special punt returner.

I guess we just put him out there and cross our fingers. If he returns punts for us, I gurantee he will take a couple to the house.

lol...my oldest son about special teams play.." I am going to return kicks this year dad, but not punts, oh hell no, you gotta have a ****in death wish to return punts"

That about sums it up too..... good luck PP, NFL players are even bigger than SEC players.

Tramon Williams, Captain Munnerlyn, DeSean Jackson and Dez Bryant all returned punts last year while playing major roles for their teams. We also ranked 27th in punt return average despite ranking 6th in attempts.

Let the man return punts.

I guess you guys are right.

Would like Roberts to at least share some of the return duties though

I agree with many of the stuff written so far, but i also look at the Bears and Devin Hester. When only concentrating on returning, he is arguably the best of all time. When playing reciever and also trying to return, he was not the same, not even close. Then, he again focused on returns for a period and excelled once again. There is clearly a trend.

I think i noticed the same for Steve Breaston. Once he had significant time on the field as reciever, his play in the return game was never the same.

Sure some players might hold the level even when asked to play in two units. Deion Sander is probably a good example. But these examples are very few, more than not, there is a negative impact.

He is going to have many problems adjusting to an NFL defense as cornerback. Especially since he needs to learn to play zone and learn the playbook very well, that is something completely new for him. The transition will be very hard and he may have serious problems early on, he is having them now in camp. All that can cause that he can't focus on the return game as well and that can cause him to transition slower into the defense.

definitely use him as our punt returner, but not as a kick returner, too risky. The hyphen is our kick returner

Why would we not let him return punts? How many injuries actually happen for punt returners im sure there are stats somewhere but my guess is not often. Primetime returned punts and I think it is fair to say he was a more valuable asset than PP is. If PP is our best punt returner then he should be doing it.

Deion Sanders, Tim Brown, etc all were weapons on Special teams.

I agree with Cheese, you can't play scared.

And none of them, nor DeSean Jackson, was / is used on every punt.

It isn't about playing scared.... it's about playing smart, strategic football.

Playing special teams also ended Jason Sehorn's career.

i'm pretty sure for the first couple years of Deion, Tim Brown and Jackson's careers they were full-time punt returners. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think so.

you gotta burn those legs while they're still burning bright. there's no guarantees as to how long people stay in this league (or in this in regards to our first round picks! :)). You make the best out of what you got when you've got it.

At such a young age, when he probably won't be a full-time starter, I say let him fly and get on the field as much as possible.

Tim Brown had over 3300 yards in punt returns and scored 3 TDs. He was a punt returner from 1988-2004. Towards the end of his career he wasn't returning punt as much as he used to but he was still out there occasionally.

I'm with CC, I think. Westbrook for the Eagles was used fairly often and then it taperd off to special occassions. I think PP21 should return punts where there is a good to very good chance of a return and not a fair catch. A team punting from their 30 yd line or closer to the goal bring PP21 in.

I agree with both of these.

The Cowboys picked their moments when they used Deion, he didn't return every punt, but if it was the right situation (long punts where a return was likely) they put him in and he was electric. I remember punters back then talk about how Deion made them so nervous they would shank 10yarders off the side of their foot trying to kick it out of bounds and keep it away from Deion.

So yes I want to see PP out there on some punts, but not every one.

I honestly believe that the largest part of PP's skill set is his play-making ability. He wasnt just good in college as a punt returner, he was a phenom.

He averaged 40/yards a punt return at one point during the season last year.....it would be assinine to keep him from returning punts...

OK LVCF, if you want to convince me that I am wrong with my position you are doing a helluva job.

Those are insane vids.

Let's get out money's worth. He can get hurt walking to his car, I'd like to see him on the field as much as possible so long as it's helping the team.

Rolle returned punts in 05 when we had even less depth at CB and managed to stay healthy.
