From Variety:

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second film this year to gross $300 million in domestic box office, may earn a distinction that's even more uncommon: back-to-back sequels shot in one simultaneous production. Recent successes which have followed the same format are Warner Bros.' "Matrix" sequels and New Line's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Sources close to the film say the producers are pondering the possibility of back-to-back sequels, and talks have begun to secure the cast should Disney pursue that avenue.

Returning for at least one sequel are producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott (who haven't completed the script), and talent Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

No start date has been set yet.

Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels Confirmations!

Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels Confirmations!
Source: Coming Soon!
Saturday, May 15, 2004

Two cool news bits have come in this weekend about the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. First up, Dark Horizons received a report from the NATO (North American Theatre Owners) annual meeting where Disney talked about the franchise.

He went on to talk about the sequel(s) to Pirates and said the entire cast and production team would be back. He said production would begin shortly on Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 and they would be released six months apart in 2006. This was news to me as I had only heard their was going to be one sequel.

This confirms earlier speculation by the Hollywood trades that Disney was going to shoot two sequels at once, much like the second and third "Matrix" films.

ComingSoon.net has also confirmed with a very reliable source that Johnny Depp's wish has come true. Rolling Stones' Keith Richards will indeed play Captain Jack Sparrow's dad in the sequel. As you probably know by now, Depp modeled Sparrow in the first film after the musician.

Chow In Pirates Sequels?

Hong Kong action star Chow Yun-fat is set to play a pirate in the upcoming sequels to last year's hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the French AFP wire service reported. The wire service cited a report in the Chinese-language Apple Daily newspaper, which quoted Chow's wife, Jasmin Chan Wui-nin, as saying Chow will play the famous 15th-century Chinese pirate Cheung Po Tsai in the second and third installments.

Chow will team up with members of the original cast, including Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley, the AFP reported. Rolling Stone legend Keith Richards will also play the father of Depp's character, Capt. Jack Sparrow, the wire service reported.

Chan said both the movie's producer and director contacted Chow's management company in the United States two months ago, and director Gore Verbinski flew to Hong Kong last week to discuss the screenplay with Chow, the Apple Daily reported.

Bruckheimer on the Pirates Sequels
Source: MTV
December 23, 2004

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells MTV he is negotiating with Geoffrey Rush to star in a third "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie.

"That's if there is a third one," Bruckheimer said. "We're hoping to start shooting [the second and third movies] in March, but we're waiting for a very big check from Disney."

Bruckheimer added that talk of Keith Richards playing Johnny Depp's father is premature, although Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are all signed on to return, along with the director and writers from "Curse of the Black Pearl."

Skarsgård in Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels
Source: Aftonbladet
January 26, 2005

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård (Ronin, Amistad, Exorcist: The Beginning, King Arthur) has landed the role as Orlando Bloom's father 'Bootstraps' Turner in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels slated to start shooting this year.

According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Skarsgård starts working on the project in February and will finish in December.

"We are going to shoot around the Los Angeles area as well as in the Bahamas and the West Indies," says Skarsgård. "I'm playing the old pirate 'Bootstraps' Turner... it should be fun, I enjoyed the first one."

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently said he was also negotiating with Geoffrey Rush to return as Barbossa in a third "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are all signed on to return, along with the director and writers from "Curse of the Black Pearl."

For some reason, the whole supernatural thing doesn't appeal to me. I'd love it if it was just a straight pirate movie with a little basis in fact--which of course means, no ghosts. But since Bootstrap is being cast, he must be a ghost since he died before the first movie took place.

Does that mean the films will be "prequels" maybe?

Naomie Harris Boards Pirates Sequels
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
January 28, 2005

Naomie Harris (After the Sunset, 28 Days Later) has joined the previously announced Stellan Skarsgård as new cast members of Walt Disney Pictures' back-to-back sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The sequels reunite the main players in the 2003 blockbuster: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley star, Gore Verbinski directs, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio write and Jerry Bruckheimer produces.

Harris will play a gypsy queen in the new films. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 starts shooting in early March in Los Angeles and the Caribbean for a summer 2006 release.

Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels Updates
Source: Misc. sources
January 31, 2005

Taggart star Alex Norton (The Count of Monte Cristo) has joined the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels cast, reports the Daily Record. The 55-year-old actor will play Edinburgh sea captain Sam Bellamy. "I've only just heard that I got the part of Captain Bellamy. I'm really excited," said Norton, "I start filming in Los Angeles next month. We then head out to the Caribbean island of St Vincent in June and July."

Stuntman Bobby Waldron will also have a role in the second and third films. The Roxbury Register says it was his work as Orlando Bloom's personal fitness trainer which led to his upcoming roles. "I'm not sure what my part will be, but I just know that I'm working on it and that's enough for me," said Waldron.

Meanwhile, Chow Yun-Fat has reportedly been staying away from the press in an attempt to keep his image for his role in the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" films a secret. However, he was caught earlier this month sporting a thick mustache and a goatee. Chow's wife said last month that the actor will be playing the famous 19th century Chinese pirate Cheung Po Tsai.

Johnny Depp also told USA Today after the Golden Globes on January 17th that "tomorrow, I start growing out my Pirates beard."

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is scheduled for a July 7, 2006 release, while the third film has not yet received a date.

Pirates of the Caribbean Secrets Unveiled!
Source: The Orlando Bloom Files
February 3, 2005

In Monday's Walt Disney Investor Conference Studio Presentation (listen here), studio Chairman Dick Cook revealed new details about the two sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Cook announced that Pirates of the Caribbean 2 will hit theaters summer of 2006, with Pirates of the Caribbean 3 following in the summer of 2007. He said that with combined theatrical and DVD/VHS sales, the first film has already generated more than $1.2 billion in the first 19 months since opening.

Cook added that the second installment will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. He said the plot goes as follows: "This time around, Johnny returns as Captain Jack Sparrow and is caught in yet another tangled web of supernatural intrigue. It turns out, Captain Jack owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, ruler of the ocean depths and captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. If Jack can't figure a crafty way out of this one, he'll be cursed to an afterlife of eternal servitude and damnation. And as if that weren't enough, Captain Jack's problems throw a huge wrench into the wedding plans of the blissful Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who quickly find themselves thrust into Jack's misadventures."

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, and stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley are all back for both sequels. Naomie Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, and Alex Norton also recently joined the cast.

Pirates Sequels to Feature Cannibals
Source: BBC
February 14, 2005

The BBC reports that the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels plan to portray Dominica's Carib Indians as cannibals. Shooting on the films is expected to take place this April in the area, with hundreds of Dominicans applying to be extras in the movie.

Carib Chief Charles Williams said talks with Disney's producers revealed there was "a strong element of cannibalism in the script which cannot be removed".

The Caribs have long denied their ancestors practiced cannibalism. "Our ancestors stood up against early European conquerors and because they stood up...we were labelled savages and cannibals up to today," said Williams.

About 3,000 Caribs live on the island of Dominica.

The Black Pearl Spotted in Alabama
Source: Crave Online, Mobile Register
April 13, 2005

Crave Online has a first look at a picture of the 130-foot Black Pearl which has been constructed at Steiner Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

The ship is expected to sail this weekend to the Caribbean island of Dominica, which lies southeast of Puerto Rico, for filming of the two sequels. The pitch black ship is a huge wooden prop built on top of a modern, 96-foot-long steel utility boat.

The Steiner Shipyard also was host to a second vessel, the 180-foot replica of the HMS Bounty built for MGM's 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty. That vessel launched from the shipyard in March and is already in the Caribbean for shooting.

Chow Yun-Fat Confirmed for Pirates 3
Source: Variety
July 7, 2005

Variety has confirmed rumors that Chow Yun-Fat will star in Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer's Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

Chow will play Captain Sao Feng, a notorious pirate who plays a major role in the second sequel to 2003's Disney blockbuster. It is the Hong Kong native's first English-language role since Bulletproof Monk in 2003.

"Pirates" 2 and 3 are shooting back-to-back, with production scheduled through January. The trade says the shoot is currently in a scheduled hiatus so director Gore Verbinski can ready portions of "Pirates 2," formally monikered Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, for post-production, with an eye toward a July 2006 release. Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is scheduled for summer 2007.

Shooting stopped June 10 and will resume in mid-August in Los Angeles, shifting back to Caribbean locations later in the year.

Lee Boards Pirates of the Caribbean 3
Source: ComingSoon.net
August 1, 2005

Reggie Lee (The Fast and the Furious) has landed a supporting lead in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean 3, directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Lee stars opposite Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Chow Yun-Fat as a villainous Pirate named Tai Huang.

Lee filmed some initial scenes with Depp in April while both sequels were filming concurrently on St. Vincent in the Caribbean. He resumes filming in late August in Los Angeles and the Bahamas through 2006. Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is due in theatres in 2007.

Lee's character is involved in several of the film's stunt sequences for which he will undergo 'pirate training' in preparation. He looks forward to the physical demands of the role, which will be no problem for the avid athlete.

Lee recently wrapped filming the lead in the horror film Dimples, written by Dusty DePree and Ron Johnson and directed by DePree. The film is due in theaters in Fall 2006.

Lee has appeared in several films including Masked and Anonymous, Frankenfish and the upcoming feature X.C.U. (Extreme Close-Up.) He had recurring roles on television as Dr. Oliver Lee on CBS' Judging Amy and rookie cop Jim Chang on Lifetime's The Division and starred in the Fox series Luis with Luis Guzman.

While filming on the second Pirates Of The Caribbean adventure is well known to be finished, the crew, under director Gore Verbinski, is back at work on the third film, which is revealed to be carrying the title Pirates Of The Caribbean: Uncharted Waters.
