Man, I'm glad we didn't go last weekend but sad at the same time.

I'm definitely seeing this movie in the next couple of weeks.

Just a sick stat;

Superman Returns (13 days) = $142M
Pirates II (3 Days) = $132M

Is there anything on the horizon that can come close to Spiderman's $115M or Pirates' $142M?!?

I respond this way each time...

"SoaP will become GenX/Y's 'Plan 9 from Outer Space'; a generation's quintessential B movie."

Box office records became so much cannon fodder for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest over the weekend as the Disney sequel opened to a stunning $132 million. It broke the previous record for a three-day weekend set by Spider-Man in 2002 with $114.8 million. It was even greater than the record for a four-day weekend, set by X-Men: The Last Stand, which garnered $122.9 million over the Memorial Day holiday. Its $55.5-million gross on Friday represented the biggest single-day take in box-office history. The $100.2 million it took in by the end of Saturday represented the biggest two-day gross. (It also became the fastest film ever to cross the $100-million mark.) Its $31,945 per-theater average was the biggest ever for a wide release, even though it played in 4,133 theaters (about 8,500 screens), the fourth-widest release in history. "A franchise like Pirates elevates the entire company," Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook told the Wall Street Journal. The movie also helped the overall box office set a new record -- a total of some $217 million, according to Nielsen EDI -- well above the $188 million set in June 2004, when Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban led the field. With moviegoers hoping to avoid sold-out theaters, online ticket sellers MovieTickets.com and Fandango.com each set records. (Fandango said that on Friday it was selling an average of nearly 10 Pirates tickets per second and that the movie represent over 90 percent of its weekly ticket sales.) In an interview with today's (Monday) Los Angeles Times, Anthony Valencia, an analyst with money manger TCW, said, "This is great news for [Disney] and for the industry. ... The first thing people are going to say when they see these record numbers is, 'Gee, I don't want to be the only person who hasn't seen that movie.'" As for Disney, Valencia said, "This puts the company back where it was for a long time -- at the forefront of family entertainment." (While Pirates was drawing most of the attention, Disney's Cars was quietly crossing the $200-million mark as it dropped just 29 percent to $10.3 million, to bring its total gross to $205.5 million.) As expected, the big loser was Superman Returns -- but it lost more than analysts had anticipated, dropping a whopping 58 percent in its second weekend to wind up with $21.9 million. (Superman Returns dropped as much as 70 percent in some overseas markets where it competed with Pirates.)

Hey, first time I have come to this section of the Board - mainly just stay on the PHX site.

I have to say that I saw this movie on Friday and was shocked at the crowd. I purchased my ticket on Fandango and snuck away from work for a couple of hours to see the 10:30 am showing. I was very surprised to see that it was sold out... I barely found as seat as it was starting.

Good movie. I enjoyed the first edition more than the sequel. However, I am looking forward to the third installment. When is that? Agree with the comments about the Cajun women - I hardly understood a word. The one thing I didn't like about the movie a ton was the "two pirates" that came back... I didn't like them in the first movie, and liked them in the second even less. It seemed that they got more screen time than Jack Sparrow. Good story line, I enjoyed it. Overall, I would give it an A-, then again the first was an A++.

Now I have to watch the original again because there were some things in this one that I didn't remember from the first one.

Very entertaining.

Saw it tonight. I liked it. I plan on watching the original this weekend and will probably go back and see the second one again. Thought Johnny Depp again did a great job as Captain Jack. Definitely amusing.

Superman Returns is going to lose a lot of steam.

It's just a boring movie. I won't even go buy it on DVD.

Well, you have to figure Superman drops to #3 this weekend behind Pirates and 'You, Me and Dupree'. I think it will be interesting to see how 1 and 2 shake out.

Pirates Sets Another Record

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is no peg leg. The movie appeared to show sturdy legs Monday when it grossed an additional $18.1 million -- the most ever earned on a non-holiday Monday. The previous record of $14.4 million was set last year by Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith. The film has now raked in $153.8 million in four days. Several writers are now speculating that it could go on even to surpass the current domestic box-office record gross of $600.8 million set by Titanic in 1998.

Saw this over the weekend.

I have some questions though:

At the end of the movie, the dude that came walking down the stairs - is that the same dude as Orlando Bloom's dad?

Why did the cannibals think Sparrow was a god?

also: I agree with the dialogue. Sometimes I couldn't understand some conversations. The 2 other pirates got too much screen time too.

Did you see the first movie? That was Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), apparently back from the dead because he was killed in the first film.

I'm not sure that a reason was given.

Can't have an epic without the R2-D2 and C3PO characters. Besides, they tied the movie into the first one. Didn't really need to have them in the movie, but it does give some personality to the crew.

"Pirates" sequel third-biggest film of all time
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060910/en_nm/pirates_dc

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The swashbuckler epic "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" has become the third film to pass $1 billion at the worldwide box office, distributor Walt Disney Co. said on Saturday.

The film starring Johnny Depp had sold $1.003 billion worth of tickets as of Friday, the company said in a statement. But it was unlikely to climb any higher up the rankings.

"Titanic," released in 1997, holds the record with $1.8 billion, followed by 2003's "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" with $1.1 billion.

"Pirates," which has ruled the foreign box office for the last nine weekends, enters its final major market, Italy, on Wednesday. The first film, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," earned $21 million there, and $656 million worldwide.

All told, the sequel has earned $415.1 million in North America, and $587.5 million internationally, the No. 1 film of the year by both measures.

A third film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," is shooting in Los Angeles with plans for release next May.

Key cast members including Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are returning. Additionally, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has just flown in to shoot a cameo role, a source close to the set said.

Richards, on whom Depp modeled his flamboyant character, Captain Jack Sparrow, has long been asked by producers to play Sparrow's father. The source declined to say what role Richards was playing.

Finally saw this last night on DVD.

It was good, but not great, IMHO. Too long and drawn out.

Yeah. It wasn't too bad. I think the movies with about 4-5 different things going on are hard to follow. They keep going on for each smaller story, and they all of the sudden end, and it makes the whole movie long becuase they have to tie in each story.

I recently watched Dead Man's Chest. Fun movie, but like several posters have previously mentioned, it seemed to drag on a little too long. I'm taking the Fam to Disneyland in a few weeks, so this was a bit of a warm-up for us.
