Plain and simple, Whiz had a bad game.

Players have bad games, this time Whiz had a bad game. I'm not advocating Whiz being replaced, nor should he be, and don't want this to turn into a should Whiz be fired thread, but he made some screwy decisions yesterday. The obvious not going for a FG stands out but I cant seem to remember him taking advantage of a running game by using play action very often. I didn't like the punt at Minny's 40, especially after going for it the previous possession. The play calling never threatened Minnesota over the top. You have to at least take a few shots. There were more but I am just chalking this up to a bad game by the staff. I thought the OL had one of their better games and the defense held them to 14 points, which could have been 6 without the aid of the zebras.

I think Skelton had a bad game. Skelton has had a lot of bad games. He has thrown some keys passes in games in sporadic order that baffles the mind to win games, but nothing you can put your finger on with confidence that says franchise QB...nothing a coach can say to himself "now here is a game plan that will work with a sporadic QB" lol

I have to agree with that. One thing I have always said about QB's is that you can't teach accuracy. They either have it or they don't.

Definitely some head scratcher decisions.

I think the deep shots thing was a function of not trusting the protection especially the way Skelton was holding the ball too long on the shorter routes. I get the idea stretch the field but it's pretty obvious if the QB has the ball 3 seconds or longer he's going to get hit.

To be fair, this was a function of the protection that Skelton was getting, not something that was "forgotten." Batiste got CONSTANT help on EVERY PASS PLAY from WiPo or LSH. You can't run play action when you need the RB to set up on the OT's outside shoulder on every pass call.

There were certainly some really bad play calls. Whiz does not call plays but sure can override them. I doubt there were many on this board who thought we could win this game but in the end we only lost by 7. Adrian Peterson was a man on a mission. One of the best runners if not the best in the NFL today. He would make yardage no matter who he plays for. Our little running back played like an all pro today. He did not back down from anything. At only 175 lbs he will not be able to last the season with this many tough carries. Kudos to LaRon S C. Great effort. This was one of our best running efforts of the year. We just do not have the overall players, have to many injuries, and have no QB to be a competitor in this league. With our QB situation any game we win will be an accident or the defense will win it. I said 6 wins and am sticking with that. Cards and St Louis will fight it out for last place in our division. Could any of the mentioned QBs put us in contention for a playoff spot? I doubt it. With that being said we might be best to go with what we have and not trade away a high draft pick or a starting player. To me our largest mistake of the year was signing Kolb at that big salary, 2nd round pick, and a very good starting DB. That deal will haunt us for some years to come.

I am no fan of Young but if he cost us no players and can be signed on the cheap I would do that if he has a decent workout for the Cards. He does have some legs.

I agree. This was not Whiz's best game. I think he took way too many unnecessary chances that backfired on him. It was very unlike him. Maybe it was the way Peterson was running the ball in the first half that had him on edge and made him press more than normal?

You have to take the points when you get a chance. If the Cardinals go for field goals they have a realistic chance to tie things up with a TD and 2 point conversion.

Whiz is surely not the cause of all our problems. In fact he has a better W/L record of any head coach we have had I think?

Having said that it sometimes makes sense to change a head coach to change the atmosphere or even the philosophy of management. If we win only 5-6 games I would guess that Whiz will likely be gone. With him might go some of the other coaches. I sure hope Ray Horton stays on but many think he may be someones head coach. We may draft high enough this year to go for a QB? That would be very nice in my opinion. This season is basically lost. We have a core of solid players but have to my gaps including the most important QB. We also have a lot of injuries especially at RB. We just do not have the horses to compete. Why might Ray Horton not be a good Head Coach canidate now that I think about it? All I really know about him is he sure gets good results as the OC. Is he smart enough to be a Head Coach. I do not know? He has to be smarter than some of the HC I hear speaking around the league and he sure is smarter than Buddy Ryan who to his credit was a successful DC.

One position that I have many questions about is left OT. He seems to make the same old mistake game after game. He gets beat largely because he is way to slow. You cannnot coach that out of player. I bet he has been responsible for more QB sacks than any player on the team. Looks to me like this guy should be cut. I cannot believe we would have a backup that is worse than him. Am I just seeing things or is this guy slower than me?

Nothing clicked that well all around....and we certainly didn't catch any breaks from the refs...for sure.

No he didn't, Whiz had the type of game he's been having since Warner retired. The ball just happened to bounce our way during the nice little run we had from end of last year until the first 4gms this year. Its not bouncing our way anymore and we're now starting to shed more light on the flaws that had been there all along: ##### oline/TEs/playcalling that should have been addressed long ago. If and when Whiz gets canned, Graves needs to go along with him.

You are absolutely correct in that last year we won the last four overtime games. This I think skews Skeltons record and we were lucky tow win 4 overtime games in the last half of the year under his direction. It was an NFL record and not likely to happen again. His statistical results were not all that good other than W/L. Your eyes tell the story. You saw the games. Did he look like an NFL QBOTF to you? Not to me. He could be a backup possible but certainly no starting QB. Much to slow afoot and lacks accuracy. Does not sense pressure and does not have a good clock in his head to know when it is time to get rid of the the ball. Does have a big heart and a big arm. Seems to lack the ability to read defenses. I do not see him changing plays at the LOS very often. Kolb just is not going to last a full season in the NFL without injury. I said that before this year even started. He is now into three consecutive years with injuries that have removed him from the game for some time. I am not even sure how fast he can read his progression. Seems slow to me which adds to sacks. Guys like Warner and Manning are very hard to blitz because they can really read defenses and get rid of the ball fast. They are/were able to stand in there and take the hit at the last moment in order to complete a pass. Manning is already making a big difference in that Bronco offense. You blitz him often and you are going to get burned especially with the no huddle offense. If you have the right QB I think the no huddle offense is the way to go and the offense of the future for the NFL with the right experienced QB. You also need a group of players who are smart with a QB who might change the plays at the LOS multiple times. A dumb guy may not be able to adjust to that many play calls over a matter of seconds. You need smart receivers who can also see a blitz coming and will cut their routes short if need be to help the QB. We are some years away from being able to do this but Kurt sure could.
