Yep, we switched places with the Lakers. Used to be we would get the high draft picks, now we get the twenty-something picks I used to see the Lakers pick and go, "Who the heck is that?" Overall, I trust our scouting department because even guys we don't have that we picked are still in the league playing. We usually come up with decent picks even if they get booed by the draft watchers up in Phoenix. In fact, Marion and Mahrle were both booed. It seems like that's a sign of future success with the Suns!

that's not actually true. we've drafted in the 20s w/ the lakers for YEARS. the amare and marion picks were high due to trades (amare was the pick we got in the bo outlaw salary dump and marion with the pick we received for steve nash). we've always drafted pretty well late (not always a stud, but a good percentage turn out to be players). and you can't compare the marion and majerle picks to where we're picking now 'cuz they were both higher picks than 20s (i think marion was 7th and majerle was 13th).

Jason Maxiell, Eddie Basden, Brandon Bass, Orien Green and Ismail Muhammad

Maxiell, Basden and Bass probably won't be available at #57.

I'm biased against Ukic because I have seen play in SA and he was nowhere close to an NBA player.
Reportedly he improved a lot since then. He had to...

I would be very happy if we end up with Ukic. He could end up going earlier but I think we have a slight chance that he could be there when we pick

Ukic or Ike I would be happy with one or the other

I don't like the idea of drafting a PG at #21. But even so, Ukic is probably the best fit for us at the position in the entire draft.

Really nothing. It's a total stab in the dark. I'm never any good at this game.

But if I have to say something...

I think the Suns' two biggest needs are a big man and a PG. It's true that Johnson and Jackson (and I guess Barbosa) can play backup PG, but having a true backup PG would help the team a lot. And if they do get a true backup PG and a credible big man, then they really don't need another wing, because they'll have Johnson, Richardson, and Jackson at SF/SG, Marion at SF in big lineups, and Barbosa at SG in small lineups. That's plenty.

So even though some attractive wings figure to be around when the Suns draft, I think they'll address a more pressing need if they can. And I expect the legitimate bigs to be gone, so that leaves PGs. Somehow with D'Antoni's Euro connections and the Suns being in a position to groom someone raw, it just feels like a good fit.

But seriously, it's just a random guess. Don't put any stock into it.

In 1986 many Suns fans laughed at the selection of Jeff Hornacek (who was like next to to the last pick in the second round). I remember the Suns staff gave him a glowing report particularly in regard to Jeff's passing ability and how he could handle the ball. This analysis was met with laughter (like it was big joke) by the fans that were there. I'm proud to say I didn't laugh.

So fans booing or laughing at selections is not always bad. In the Suns case, it may be a good sign. As a matter of fact, I think the selection of William Bedford was cheered.

I think laughing at the selection of a player is worse than booing as it demeans both the player as well as the organization. I think booing is more related to chastising just the organization for the pick.

Based on the yahoo link, Chris Taft seems to be just what we need--he must really have some issues if he's dropping like he's rumored to be.

There are mixed reports as to whether that Outlaw trade actually got us our pick back that year. Regardless, it was still our pick and pick which was based on our record the previous year.

The future is not very bright for the Suns without Nash and I'm not sold the Suns have his future replacement on the roster.

However, if a quality PG is not there at #21, then the Suns need to go with BPA, hopefully a 4/5.

Of course I'm assuming that Uric (?) is the BPA and fills our need for a backup PG (now) for Nash or at least with minimal grooming. I do not want the Suns to draft a Euro and leave him overseas.

I was in attendance the year Majerle got drafted and do remember the booing. Cotton got on the mike on the stage and said that the crowd would be pleasantly surprised. That year we had two first round selection Majerle was the second, anybody remember who was our first 1st rounder?







Tim Perry. Everyone in the crowd was more excited about him, so do not judge what the public thinks.

Being from Iowa I knew a lot about Hornacek and thought it was solid selection.

Or draft an international player who could be left to develop overseas, while they use the money they save this year by not signing a first-round pick to sign free agents. The No. 21 pick would cost the Suns about $1.1 million for the upcoming season.

The American players under consideration include: Ike Diogu; David Lee; Ryan Gomes; Francisco Garcia; Sean May; and Chris Taft

Foreign players include: Rudy Fernandez; Mickael Gelabale; Ersan Ilyasova; Johan Petro; and Roko Ukic, a 6-5 guard from Croatia

Seems like most of the American and Foreigns players that are under consideration (highlighted in bold) have been worked out by the Suns. The only players left out that are big name to me are Sean May; Chris Taft; Roko Ukic

If this list is really accurate, maybe there is hope that we will still work the rest of the players

With Ainge spending as much time as he did in Treviso, (3 days) it's obvious he had a keen eye on the talented playmaker. A promise with Ukic is now considered a strong possibility. Past history shows that Ainge likes to target a player and get a promise in place.

Ukic fits into the Celtics up tempo style of play, and should develop into a better playmaker and pro than former Celtic Jiri Welsch and Net combo guard Zoran Planninic. Ukic has more point guard abilities, and tons of talent. it's just a question of how well his game fits the NBA style. Everybody is speculating on promises, but I doubt most of them are legitimate. The one that seems most likely right now is that the Clippers have offered that Russian kid a promise to take him at #12. I say that because the more reputable (a term I use loosely) web sites are basically reporting this as a fact. I think there's a decent chance that the Phoenix Suns have now given Diogu a promise, but I definitely don't think it's a certainty.

I think the Suns gave Ike a guarantee, but did not demand he pull out of the other workouts. I don't think Ike would stay in the draft without some kind of guarantee nor do I see anyone with the remotest chance of falling to 21 they'd prefer.
