My brother and dad have told me about this. My dad heard somewhere they were thinking about doing this in the future. If the ball is bouncing on the rim after a shot attempt, it wouldn't be goaltending anymore if a defensive player knocked it away or grabbed it. Anybody hear something similar to that? If what I heard really happens then the NBA will lose even more fans and Stern will be hated a lot more than right now. Please tell me I heard wrong and it's actually something else.

that's FIBA rules. no way will it be incorporated into the nba. the nba wants m ore scoring, not less.

That would be horrible. A ball that bounces off the back of the rim and is about to go in could be rebounded by the defense. I would hope they don't make that change and can't imagine they would.

The only brightside is that it would remove one of the many subjective calls the refs have to make.

This actually came up last year at that rules committee meeting...Just like what was stated this is legal in the international game as well as in the Olympics I believe. I dont see this reducing scoring by that much. I would not be surprised to see more rules adopted to make us match up better with the international game.

I agree completely.

The NBA is going to change, and there is a reason why the Suns play better international ball than most teams...Jerry is ahead of the curve, and Stern put Jerry in charge of the olympic team for a reason...I don't know if I do or do not like the changes coming ahead, but they will happen...Furthermore, these changes will help the USA win the gold again in the olympics, as our players can adjust to the new rules over the course of a season, instead of a few weeks.

If they adopt the FIBA rule, it would also be true that an offensive player could touch the ball on the cylinder. So it might not decrease scoring at all.

I am not sure about all the difference between the rules, but I would have to think there would need to more then this difference in order for them to change the rules. I would like to see how keeping a team together for a longer time will help our changes before we start changing NBA rules. But I agree changes will come. I hope we dont change our lane to match the lane in the international game. I hate that international lane. Looks stupid.

Good point.

Geez Marion would never miss a shot within 5 feet if he can just throw it back down while its on the rim. Nobody cant get back to the rim as quick as he can.

To complete what Eric said, under FIBA rules, once the ball strikes the rim any player can play the ball by swating it away or taping it in (there's no "cylinder").

So I guess a rule switch won't dramatically change the scoring but would be an advantage for the high flying, energic players who struggle to finish under/around the rim.

this rule would be good in the sense that it would take the "judgement" away from the idiot refs who cant seem to see the obvious 1/2 the time....:p
