I firmly believe that discipline, and the ability to avoid stupid penalties accounts for about +/- 2 games per year. If this team wasn't the most penalized team in the league last year, we would have made the playoffs.
there were certain types of penalties that were the drivers of NFL average vs top 5 for the Cardinals. Aside from the two noted below, the Cards looked like other NFL teams:
1. pre snap penalties.
2. Defensive secondary penalties (holding, illegal contact, PI)
im skeptical of "discipline" as the main or only problem. if that were the case, it should show up all over the place.
on pre snap, i think there are problems that need to be solved starting with how the play gets called in. For a team that likes to play fast, too many times they are constantly up against the play clock.
further, i wonder about K1s cadence.
the secondary is easier to understand. both P2 and Kirkpatrick are grabby players and the team plays lots of man --- that may go down this year, but i think any team that plays lots of man will probably log lots of secondary penalties
