I don't like to think about it either. But don't you feel there are some nuggets of truth in what they are saying? Seriously, you have to concede that the meat industry is pretty disgusting when you let yourself think about it. And I'm no vegan - I had some bird for lunch today. I wish I had the dedication to go vegetarian because I'm sickened by how the meat industry goes about it's business.

Let's put it this way.

Vegans are to Vegetarians as Radical Evangelicals are to Christians.

Does that help you get where Nasser is coming from? It's ok to espouse your lifestyle and do what is good and healthy, but quit soapboxing me to death.

Most wont wear leather either...

I don't wear leather or fur. And I don't have any leather shoes, which has REALLY put a damper on my shoe collection. So many times I have seen cute shoes on sale and have had to say no because they are leather. :( Stupid principles.

I totally agree!

In high school, I had a friend named Deb who was a vegetarian for all of three months. She was so vocal about it and was up in everyone's business about it.

One night a bunch of us ordered pizza and our friend, Chris, said "how's pepperoni?" I said, "Coujld you get 1/2 with just cheese. I'm a vegetarian, you know." He replied, "What have you been talking to Deb?" which infuriated me because I was a vegetarian for months before she got on board. I just didn't go around spouting off at the mouth every chance I got.

Oh, and fwiw, she started eating meat again about two months after that little exchange.

See, I can understand being a vegetarian for religous purposes.. But because of animal cruelty I cant.. Alot of animals would gladly eat the crap outta us if given the chance..

Sorry Jersey Girl, thats how I think.. And Im not trying to bust your balls over your way of thinking, just saying.. :)

although, I assume animal cruelty is where it started - I have no idea

Hilarious...being vegetarian was her attempt for attention then, huh?

I suppose. She was one of those people who always tried so hard to be different that she wound up being like everyone else.

High school. What a freaking head trip.

I'm cool with vegetarians, I think in the long run, they are healthier if they do it right. BUT I have a friend who is a vegetarian and shes one of the most unhealthy people I know (and overweight). Sure she doesn't eat meat, but that doesn't stop her from eating TONS of french fries, potatoe chips, cheetoes, cheese dip, chips/salsa, chocolate, cookies, sodas, etc etc.

She's always hungry, probably because she doesn't get enough protein which makes you feel full. So when I think vegetarian, I initially think to myself "healthy" then I think of this girl and think "yuck".

Is everything
Vegans are to Vegetarians as Radical Evangelicals are to Christians.

I'm sure some feel that way, but I don't think you can lump everyone together nice and tidy like that. I know some vegetarians who sympathize with the stance of vegans.

Vegans are not taken as seriously and therefore are much more harmless than radical Evangelicals.

Yeah, I guess so on a pop culture level. They don't seem to have much political clout though.

Well, from a perspective of political clout, there are only about 5.5 million vegetarians in the US, and only about 1 million of those are Vegan. There are scads more far right evangelicals.

LOL! She needs to check her self Reg. Many of those products contain traces of meat by products. I've very rarely met out of shape vegetarians.

You are so lucky I like you! :D

Okay. Revised statement. Nothing that has a face that was once alive and is now dead. Better? :p

BTW, Teddy Grahams are yucky!!!

But aren't Gummi bears made from gelatin?

And since gelatin is made from beef bones, cartilage, hooves, and pig skin.....you're still eating something with a face that used to be alive and is now dead. :p

Not all are, but I don't usually eat gummi bears. :) And thanks for bringing up a point that not a lot of people are aware of. Gelatin is in a lot of things. I recently saw it in sour cream. Crazy to me, since it really isn't necessary.

BTW, I totally love how some people think it's cool to come at me about my eating preferences and challenge me on my beliefs. (This is not directed to you Heucrazy, just in case you were wondering. :) ) Like they try to trick me up on things or something. Like it's anyone's business, really. I'm not the one going around preaching. People find out I'm a vegetarian and they make it their goal to find flaws in my personal beliefs. I don't care what the hell you eat, so why should people care what I eat? I mean, really, of all the things to worry about in the world. :bigyawn:

This is an odd phenomenon I've noticed, too (as a vegan myself). I get a lot of "Well, did you know...." or "What would you do if...." challenges (some of them super intense) and a lot of people try to paint me as holier-than-thou without knowing anything other than the fact I don't eat animal products. It's really bizarre.

Also, here's a good shoe store if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk/ (since I'm reviving a five year old thread, lol).

It really is an odd phenomenon. It used to piss me off something fierce. (Been a vegetarian for, wow, 22 years.) The one I'd get most often was "Do you wear leather?" Um, no. Do you? And, really, why do you care?

Then I'd get the "but you USED to eat animals, so why is it wrong now?" Um, I never said it was wrong. It just isn't right for me. BTW, I also used to hook up with frat guys, but I don't do that anymore either. Duh.

Thanks for the link! Will check it out!

My ex-sister-in-law is a vegan, but she wears leather. When we first met, I did NOT get that at all. But, it's not mine to get. She explained it as, "I don't mind wearing animal--I just won't consume/ingest animal". To each their own.

My only real complaint about her is that she lives with my ex & his mom (her husband's mother), and she would not even "allow" a ham to be in the house for Christmas dinner...they each pay half the mortgage, so it's not like it's "her" house. She has a special affection for pigs and forbids it. Drives me CRAZY to hear about it.

Hmm. That is kinda weird, but, like you said, to each their own.
