So because they were "meaningless" kicks they somehow mean less? According to you, he was doing his JOB. But it doesn't count when it doesn't win the game??? Your whole post makes no sense whatsoever to me, sorry.
Absolutely, are you kidding me. There is a reason you here the word "clutch" when people talk sports. It is 100Xs harder to kick when it means something. The ability to kick good in the clutch is the defining characteristic of a kicker.

It's like the guy who's a 90% FT shooter until the last 2 minutes of the game when he's just a 70% shooter. It's because of the magnitude of the situation that his % goes down.

Same with Rackers, if the kick is early in the game or in a one sided game, he makes it, if it's late, or in a close game, he makes it less frequently.

True--with one swing of his leg, Rackers could have been the hero. But NOT being the hero does not automatically make him the goat. These two labels don't go hand in hand. When he missed the kick, he failed to be the hero. It doesn't mean he lost the game for us. The TEAM lost the game. He just wasn't the hero.

Now that is true! Great take, it is not always one or the other (especially not from 55 yards)

Jeff Reed? Bring him in!

However, people on the "matt parties too much" bandwagon would lose their minds. Reed is a notorious Steeltown party animal.

Check this out...those pics are insane.

http://deadspin.com/sports/at-least...is-the-most-fun-kicker-of-all-time-268100.php

He's still their kicker isn't he?

I don't care what Matt does on his own time as long as he plays well as our QB.

Same with the kicker.

The ex 49er kicker Owen Pochman just wrote a book, I think his NFL career lasted about 6 weeks, maybe less.

he missed every big kick he tried, his teammates wouldn't speak to him. After his last game, (he missed to lose the game), he got on the bus and discovered he was sitting on a chilidog, but he stayed there the whole way afraid to get up and take the ridicule. When they got home he cleaned out his locker and was predictably cut. He was much worse than Rackers but he made the point NFL kickers are always one miss from being unemployed.

I keep Rackers mainly because I don't know who else is out there but the reality is we have found out why a guy with his leg was available, he can't make big kicks.

And here, some people won't allow us to bring up the good from years past, and others still focus on the bad. All you Rackers haters need to get together & decide if previous years count or not.
Yes they do matter IMO. He has had one good year and a bunch of mediocre ones.

That is what I said in my first post. I never said sign another kicker and cut someone. You guys need to go back and read all the post before you run to the aid of your buddies.

Hey buddies, don't worry...I got this one.

Ok, Your first post:

I just said I wanted to bring in COMPETION, is that so hard for you to understand???

After that you changed words in a following post to "audition" which prompted this comment from me:

And bringing someone in for an "audition" or a workout is most definitely NOT the same thing as bringing in someone for competition with Rackers. That would mean carrying two kickers and cutting a player.

So, you originally said you wanted to bring in competition for Rackers, which would entail cutting someone and carrying two kickers. Later you clarified it as meaning just work out some kickers. You need to be aware of what you post and what people say in response before you start throwing out snide little "buddies" comments.

Yeah, the guy is nails. He has a long term deal with them still, I think.

I don't care about what players do off the field either. I think Reed could come in drunk and nail a game winner.

THe NYT did a recent article on kickers that used I think football outsiders data. Basically it says the only reliable number on kickers is average on kickoffs. year to year kickers are hot or cold on FG's, but the KO stuff stays about the same. Rackers was actually an exception his kickoff numbers jumped when he went from Cincy to Arizona.

The argument was we judge kickers on the wrong thing, pick the guy who's good on kickoffs because you probably won't know year to year if he'll be good at FG's because with very few exceptions, kickers are unreliable year to year. The ones who are reliable, are the best kickers in the game.

I Never saw anybody say anything counts or doesnt count. But it all adds up, to tell a story, and this story doest have a happy ending. I am not a NR hater. The man has a ton of talent. He's a kicker with a LB mentality. All admirable traits. But all I am saying is it seems to me the all the stories we heard from the Natti are looking to be true.

Yep. That is in this (or last year's) Football Prospectus. Cool stuff.

PA, lets put it this way. How about you create a thread for Warner, because of his 3 turnovers. If we don't have any of those, we probably win.

Dockett gets a thread too, because his penalty kept a drive alive that caused a score.

Special teams gets one, because they allowed an 80 yard kickoff, etc.

You just aren't looking at the bigger picture.

While we're creating threads & making cuts don't forget the holder (Barr) & long snapper (Hodel)!!! I hate losing as much as the next guy but these threads serve zero purpose "PA". :(

My apologies to you sir. I did write that. It was after the game when I told PA that I would like them to bring kickers in to light a fire under NR behind. But wouldn't competion still not entail cutting anyone since we have a bye week? There can be competion in practice as well. This what I meant, but I didn't word it very well...Again my apologies.

And even our fan favorite Boldin for that horrible 2pt conversion pass.

That was a sissy pass. I think the Real Anquan was on another planet at that moment saving the universe so he couldn't focus on his football player avatar.
