That would have been a major coup, but still a bummer.

Also in the same article:

The day was not a total loss, however. Recruiting services Rivals and Scout.com reported that Josh Tremblay, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound guard from American River College in Sacramento, committed to ASU. He is the fourth-junior college player to join coach Todd Graham’s 2013 class, joining teammate Nick Kelly, an offensive lineman who committed Sunday.

Beau Sandland, a 4-star JUCO TE is also slated to announce his college decision on Wednesday. Priest Willis is making his announcement at the Under Armour AA game on January 4. No telling when AZ's other high profile unsigned player, Devon Allen will decide though.

TE Sandland announced he is going to Miami. He expressed concern about playing time, with only 2 years left of eligibility, and having to back up Coyle, I am not surprised.

I can't stand football recruiting. Such a complete crap shoot and no matter how a class ends up being rated by the experts every coaching staff and 90% of their fanbase will find a way to falsely hype it up. Basketball recruiting is significantly more of a science and even then there's a element of randomness to it.

Merry Christmas Sun Devils!

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=27259

A pair of junior college prospects, four-star wide receiver Jaelen Strong (Philadelphia/Pierce College) and three-star inside linebacker Eriquel Florence (San Pablo, Calif./Contra Costa College), committed to Arizona State on Christmas, multiple sources report.

Strong, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect, selected the Sun Devils over offers from Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Miami-FL, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, Oregon State and Purdue.

He is considered the 15th best junior college talent for 2013, and, "very similar to another fine prospect in this class in WR Jonathan Rumph (Cayce, S.C./Holmes CC/Georgia), only Strong may be faster."

Does anybody think we have a shot at Kylie Fitts, the DE that recently decommitted from USC? I saw that we were one of the schools that have an offer on the table, but he hasn't visited or anything. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/college-football/story/_/id/8825659/kylie-fitts-decommits-usc-trojans

Things don't seem to be going well for USC lately, and that's ok with me!

I think you'll have to live with the moral victory that USC didn't get him on this one. On the flip side, it looks like ASU might be back in with JC tight end Vandenburg. I just don't know if ASU cares anymore.

Do you know if it is against NCAA rules to use current players to make contact with recruits to try to get them on board? If not, it seems like someone like Sutton could be an asset in this regard.

They're used all the time. Upperclassmen are used as official hosts. It's how a lot of programs end up with minor violations (that usually go unreported) -- usually underage drinking. A lot of times players are encouraged to establish a rapport post-visit, via Twitter or e-mail or whatever. It depends on the player.

I don't know that Sutton has been used in recruiting in the past because of his uncertain future with the program, so he probably has no prior relationship to those kids. However, I'm sure they'll be including him in these late visits, and dropping his name when he's not around.

It's a big piece of the puzzle in recruiting Priest Willis, IMO.

ASU has been on a recruiting blitz the last couple of weeks. They have had large numbers of visitors (double digits) last week and this weekend and they have been paying off. ASU has gained commitments from 2 JC DL, a JC TE, 2 HS OL/DL and are awaiting word from a huge JC OT. They have some commits from other schools visiting as well as some 4-star surprises making visits.

On a side note, rumors floating that both Devon Allen and Priest Willis may end up at CA schools instead of ASU.

Sad, but I figured as much, especially w/ Allen. He never seemed interested in ASU.

Hopefully now that the staff is settled here, they can start making connections with these local kids earlier on and getting their foot in the door ASAP. I'm not too bummed about missing out on Allen, but Priest Willis would've been huge.

DE Marcus Hardison, the No. 5 rated JUCO recruit, has committed to ASU!
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/r...cus-hardison-commits-arizona-state-sun-devils

Dodge City (Kan.) Community College defensive end Marcus Hardison, the No. 5 player in the ESPN Junior College 100, has committed to Arizona State.

Hardison chose the Sun Devils over Kansas State, West Virginia, Washington, South Florida and Auburn.

"They have been the top team since Day One," Hardison said. "They were the team to beat. But, at the same time, I took my time just to make sure that Arizona State was the school for me.

"The coaches are great. They have a plan for me. The education is great. Their graduation rate with minorities is very high. I can go get a degree. I have high hopes. I feel like I fit the scheme of the defense and coaches have been real with me since Day One."

Many of the teams put the full-court press on the 6-foot-4, 275-pound edge rusher this week before his decision, but Arizona State had been the long-time favorite. Kansas State's Bill Snyder stopped by early Wednesday morning. West Virginia's Dana Holgorsen was on campus Tuesday. Texas Tech and Arizona State have also stopped by this week, but it was K-State that made Hardison's final decision a tough one.

"To be honest, before I went on the K-State visit I was sold on Arizona State," he said. "Then I went on the visit to KSU and it ruined everything because I had a great time at KSU. It was awesome. At one point K-State was leading. But in the end my opportunities are better at ASU. I like everything about K-State, and I wish them well." [/QUOTE

Looks like our D Line is really shaping up.

No surprise, Priest Willis commits to UCLA.

Its tough to keep these guys in the Valley. Having grown up here, I know I wanted to go elsewhere when I got out of high school to see something different for a change. That's hard to overcome.

I think the only thing that is going to help in a big way is to build a consistent winning tradition where the local high school players would crave playing for ASU.

It's more that...

- ASU and UA haven't been consistently successful football programs in forever
- we are academically inferior to the CA schools
- UCLA's staff has better relationships with local HS coaches than ASU/UA
- weather is 100x better

I am actually worried about next year because the talent is considered to be far more superior than this year's group of seniors. As of right now, a lot of the AZ 2014 class are considering ASU & UA but I fear a lot of the elite guys will end up playing outside of AZ borders.

I thing that Graham is starting to turn around the HS coaches point, and hopefully the success point as well.

As for academics, I don't think this is why kids are leaving AZ. Not only that, I think there are some programs at ASU that are more attractive to recruits than USC or UCLA, it really depends upon what you want to study.

Devon Allen officially commits to Oregon..

No real surprise, just another top athlete leaving AZ for a rival school...

Have fun in the rain Devon!

Frankly, I think ASU has already picked up at least one WR recruit that is way better than this guy.

Yes but it takes time. Yarber, Mazzone, Broussard have been around the Valley much longer. Graham also won't have the luxury of a raving idiot coach in Tucson who acted above and beyond local HS coaches. It can happen but will be a process. ASU will generally do fine in the Valley even with Graham's used car salesman schtick. Location is 80% of the battle in football recruiting.

There's almost nothing that you can get at UA or ASU that looks better on a resume than the comparable program at UCLA, Stanford, and Cal. USC breeds postgraduate success for different reasons, it has a good old boy network that is unparalleled in the Western US.

Academics do a play a part. I love UA but if my kid ever got a free ride to Cal or Stanford he or she is going there end of story.
