Had to let him go at that price...

AZ tried to cut a deal, but the grace period over the weekend informed Toler that there was a heck of a lot more $$$ waiting on him in the market. This isn't about deserting AZ, but simply looking out for number one as he should. (IMO)
agreed on both. Can't disagree with his and the Cards' choices
Toler had a total of 15 starts in AZ. Powers, who is about to visit has had 42 over the same period.
lol. Slight difference

So far I haven't seen anything from the new regime that impresses me.

Tick...Tick...Tick....

1. We still can't lock up our young players before they hit FA.
2. Our division rivals are crushing us in talent, aggression, and media buzz.
3. We continue to replace our draft picks and stay horribly thin at most positions.

How have we changed under this new paper regime?

So you would have given Toler $5M a year?

Honestly, 5 Mill for one of the top young CB's on the market isn't horrible if it is structured in a cap friendly way.

If we extend him last year it would have been for pennies. If we do it in the regular season (like Washington) I bet we see a 3 to 4 year 10 million dollar deal. If we did it last month I bet we see at worst..... a 3 year 12 million dollar deal.

I guess it should come as no surprise that we can't project a players value the way other teams do

Not when you can rent a CB for $2.5 to 3.5 million for a year. That's two years in a row by the way where a Cardinal DB has left for about $5 million a year somewhere else.

For a guy who has 15 starts and 1 INT? You are a very generous man with the Cardinals limited cap dollars.

You missed my point. Failing to do an adequate job locking him up over the last 12 months is the reason you can now say he is worth 5 million per. You always pay a premium to take talent from another team.

The guy was coming off major knee surgery and was not 100% until well into this last season. Your point is that our own medical staff had plenty of time to figure out how well he would recover. And now other teams are showing us what a real front office can do with good players.[IMGhttp://www.proprofs.com/flashcards/upload/q10832166.jpg[/IMG

Understand. However as I mentioned before he was coming off missing an entire season so you wouldn't sign him long term. That would be crazy although Graves knows crazy.

By the time it was mid season last year, things were in such turmoil the Cards were not spending money to sign guys with the future of the previous staff in question.

Why not during the season? Can we not project how he is recovering from November to February? Have we not seen his work ethic in recovery?

A CB with his physical gifts deserves a strong look-see IMO. Especially at such an important position.

Now.... With all of the evaluators salivating over him we finally can see the mistakes we have made throughout the entire process.

Sometimes I think our weather and golf courses give our staff a good reason to take a long weekend. Drives me effing nuts.

This is not how a new coach, new GM, and a flailing organization build for the future. In fact, it makes me think they look at us like we are fools.

Beanie, Adub, & Gay were all cut before any concrete replacements were in place. That is so beyond stupid IMO.

Even weaker. Good job try trying to blame the origination like you do so well.

why do you defend them when they give you no reason to do so?

The point you are missing, as you so eloquently put it, is that an ACL injury for position like CB is like Derrick Rose for the Bulls. He is bumping and grinding 50% of the many plays he is in on. It takes up to 18 months before you know if you are the same.

Point is - once upon a time we had a bunch of talented but raw corners. Regardless of whatever excuses the FO wants to come up with, it's a fact that we no longer have DRC, Jefferson, another small-school corner (whose name escapes me) and now Toler.

We've gone from feast to famine and are now down to Fleming and maybe Adams opposite PP. This is, pure and simple, incompetent FO personnel management no matter how you cut it.

Did he even start in 2012? Weren't PP and Gay the starters at CB? I'm not a Graves supporter but why would he go out of his way to extend a CB who hadn't started in 1.5 years?

Do I need to mention that at the time, Gay & Adams were the only options we had that were still playing and had a contract into next year? Fleming had his playing time drastically reduced while Toler saw more and more of the field as the season went on.

Hell..... I would have extended him immediately after the game where he saved us that fumble going out of bounds.

Meanwhile Johnson & Toler were both entering FA, our rookie was getting his snaps cut, and Gay was crapping all over the field in coverage.

Seriously..... There is enough foreshadowing here for a major motion picture.

Come on now, don't you know that technology and a good medical staff can see the future. Looks at Greg Oden and Brandon Roy, see what Portland was able to do with their bad knees.
