Williams, Long, Joseph, they're all talented players but they're all more like Bryant and I don't think you can play 2 guys like that together, especially with a small MLB like McKinnon depending on his DT's taking on the blocks.

This is exactly what I have been saying, but no one is listening!!
There's only four players of the top DTs that would fit this defense. We need a two-gap DT to to free up some space for Brtyant and our DEs. Of the seven potential 1st round DTs only three are two-gap players. That's Kennedy, Sullivan and Ty Warren. Robertson is per definition actually a one-gap DT, but he's just so good that he's a force against the run, too.

Can you define what you mean by one gap and 2 gap? I see Robertson described as both depending on who's writing it and it makes me wonder if there's multiple definitions.

What I think the Cards need is a DT who can anchor, who can make 2 guys block him and still hold his ground in the middle, freeing up Bryant to beat his man and get penetration.

The classic combo in college was Hampton and Rogers at Texas, Hampton was the plugger, Rogers the slasher. Here I would hope Robertson would be the plugger, Bryant the slasher. But Robertson should be a better player than Hampton when all is said and done he's bigger, stronger and more athletic.

If we're going to build a defense, Robertson this year and Lance Mitchell next year. I think DT's have more value to the defense than DE's. Robertson has no holes in his game or his workouts.

We need a playmaker at MLB. Someone else might pop up, but Mitchell is my pick to be the man in 2004 at MLB.

I think the terms come from one-gap players shoot the gap and thereby only "playing" one gap, where two-gap players plays the man and plays the two gaps on either side of him.

Anyway, The War Room uses this definition (Since I get my draft information from them, it's natural to use their definitions):

Two-gap: A run-stuffing tackle, who does not make a lot of plays in the back-field, but take up a lot of space and keep blockers off the LBs.

One-gap: Penetrating tackles, who are more likely to make a big play or get to the quarterback in the passing game but tend to be undersized and struggles at times to hold up against the run.

Of course, that doesn't mean that a one-gap player can't stop the run or a two-gap can't rush the passer. It's usually a mix between the two, but the the lower you go, the more the players tend to move away from the middle and be either one or the other.
