This was one tough SOB. He was a 2 way player, center and linebacker. His most famous hit was when he knocked Frank Gifford clean out:

IIRC he was the last two way player and his nickname was the concrete Charlie because he sold concrete in the offseason. He is from the Lehigh Valley (where I live), born in Bethlehem PA. Very outspoken and a very tough dude.

They had a nice article about him in the Sunday paper here in Harrisburg. He really had some interesting things to say about today's players.

"The positions I played, every play, I was making contact, not like that ... Deion Sanders," Bednarik said. "He couldn't tackle my wife. He's back there dancing out there instead of hitting."

On Gifford.

"I sent a basket of flowers and a letter to Frank in the hospital," Bednarik said. "I told him I'd pray for him. I'm a good Catholic but I'm also a football player. When I was on the field, I knocked the hell out of people, but that's the name of the game."

He also said that the players back then were not like the ones today. Today's players are sucking wind after 5 plays.

His daughter is claiming that football caused his dementia and he his illness wasn't as brief as the Eagles released din their statement. The guy also flew 30 missions over Germany in WWII.
